cosmetic care of your dog. It allows you to give volume to
hair, to untangle kinky hair, to reinforce the hair and make

Why use perfume for
cats and dogs?
Cats and dogs are full-fledged members of our family and take part of our
every-day life. This lifestyle, is far
from what their ancestors were used
to. Because our home is also their
home, pets should have a pleasant or
at least, not unpleasant odour.
Depending on the breed and depending on
the type of hair, production of sebum that is
necesary when living outdoors, is necessary to
protect against rain, fungi, insects and irritations.
Sebum is a fatty substance, produced unfortunately by dogs who live in the home where
it is hot in summer or winter, that tends to generate unpleasant odors.
For these reasons, it is very important to take
proper care of our dog by following regular
hygiene procedures: wash the dog with a specific sebum regulating dog shampoo, such as

What is atopic dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis in dogs is the second most common form of skin allergy after allergic dermatitis
caused by flea bites. This disorder affects 3% to 15% of dogs (it is rare in cats) and usually occurs
in pets aged 1 to 3 years.
Some dog breeds such as German Shepherd, Boxer, Labrador Retriever, Cairn Terrier, West Highland White Terrier, Fox Terrier, Irish Setter, Poodle and Miniature Schnauzer, are especially
prone to this form of dermatitis that occurs with a similar frequency in mixed breeds as well. Atopic dermatitis appears to be almost always inherited.
Atopic dermatitis occurs as a result of the reaction of the immune system of Dogs hypersensitive
to external allergens (type I hypersensitivity). The most common allergen which can lead to the
onset of atopic dermatitis are pollens, moulds, feathers, dust and mite residue. The route by which
most frequent allergens are introduced in the organism is by inhalation. The main consequence
of this is a generalised allergic skin reaction.
In some cases the onset of rhinitis and conjunctivitis have been experienced, while more rarely
asthma occurred.
The main sign of atopic dermatitis is itching, which may be extended to the whole body or, more
often localized in specific areas such as armpits and sides of the abdomen.
To relieve itching caused by skin irritation, the dog licks, rubs and sometimes eats the skin in
areas where the itching is most intense. The consequence is that the areas where the animal is
constantly licking become stained (reddish-brown colour). That is more evident in patients with
a light color coat. The persistence of irritation contributes to hair loss and the increased severeness
of skin lesions in areas where the dog itches and scratches more.
This situation can also lead to the development of secondary infections.
Skin inflammation results in excessive sebum secretion, which gives the hair a greasy appearance
and appears rancid. In this situation, excessive sebum secretions results in skin and hair that are
more susceptible to bacteria colonization, which contributes to foul odour.
Atopic dermatitis is commonly diagnosed through blood tests.
You can also find the allergen which is responsible for this disease through a prick test. This in-

volves an intradermal injection of small amounts of allergens and evaluating the occurrence of
allergic reactions. Often, however, this type of survey is not practical for animals and many false
negatives and false positives occur.

Strategy for the treatment of atopic dermatitis
The best defense against atopic dermatitis is to prevent contact with the allergens that cause the
outbreak. It is easy to understand how this strategy is difficult, if not impossible to implement.
A good approach is the use of pharmacological therapy. Anti-inflammatory drugs such as steroids
can effectively counteract inflammation of the skin and itch. Steroids are usually used with antibiotics and antifungals in order to combat bacterial and fungal infections, often found in the damaged areas.
Antihistamines are apparently less effective than drugs, so they are almost always associated with
steroids to reduce the dosage.
One important aspect is the diet, wich should eliminate eventual allergenic noutrients and to
supply the organism with noutrients fighting the dermatitis.
Polyunsaturated fatty acids Ω-3 and Ω-6 are especially useful thanks to their anti-inflammatory
characteristics and thanks to the content of vitamin E which is a valid antioxidant.
The best strategy in the treatment of atopic dermatitis to obtain better results is combining therapy
with a detoxifying agent.

The main objective in the treatment of dermatitis, is to alleviate the intense itching that forces
the animal to scratch. Constant scratching causes the animal to lose hair and skin lesions. Excellent
results have been obtained by integrating the diet with locally applied products to relieve inflammation and to restore the integrity of skin and coat.
The hygiene aspect for dogs is also very important and should be kept under control through the
use of a delicate shampoo that does not have an irritating effect on the already damaged skin.
There are some fatty acids that the body cannot synthesize and for this reason they must necessarily
be introduced in the diet.

Special attention should be paid to two of these essential fatty acids because they play an important
role in the prevention and treatment of skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis, they are: linoleic
acid (LA) and acid a-linolenic acid (ALA).
These fatty acids are transformed into other polyunsaturated fatty acids in the organism (PUFA)
by specific enzymes that lenthen the chain of carbon atoms and introduce other double ties. polyunsaturated fatty acids Ω-6 (Ω-6), including the main gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), aciddiomo gamma Linolenic acid (DGLA) and arachidonic acid (AA).
Seed oils are particularly rich in omega-6polyunsaturated fatty acids. The main series of polyunsaturated fatty acids Ω-3 (Ω-3) that derive from-linolenic acid are: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
The best dietary sources of polyunsaturated fatty acids omega-3 are sea fish oil and linseed oil.
Ω-6 and Ω-3 are competors for the common use of certain enzymes in the metabolism.
This causes an excessive intake of omega-3, which in turn results in a lower production of Ω-6
Linoleic acid and vice versa in case of excessive intake of Ω-6 fatty acids.
Therefore a balanced fatty acid intake is needed. It is believed that the ideal ratio Ω-6 / Ω-3 is
5:1.
