Published by Stillaguamish Senior Center Executive Director’s Message Thank you all that attended and supported the Stillaguamish Senior Center’s Ninth Annual “Lifetime Achievement Fundraising Breakfast”. It was a privilege to honor and recognize Ruth Munizza for her many years of service to her community. Ruth Porter was born in Port Townsend, the seventh of thirteen children of Jennie and William Porter. She grew up on a family farm in Port Ludlow where food was raised to feed the large family. Her father was not a farmer, but worked for a lumber company. The Porter children attended Chimacum School on the Olympic Peninsula, which housed grades 1-12. After high school, Ruth attended the University of Washington where she earned her degree in Physical Education. Eleven of her siblings also received college degrees. When Ruth moved to Arlington in 1948 to teach girls physical education, she had already developed a passion for education, athletics, and of course, her soon to be husband Larry Munizza, a coach at Arlington High School, whom she married in 1950. The couple raised four children, all girls: Dawn, Kim, Toni and Jenny. All four attended Arlington High School and went on to earn college degrees. Her love for the community of Arlington began 66 years ago, when she began her new teaching position at Arlington High School. She was a popular teacher, always showing you “where to look”, not “what to see”. She had not been in Arlington teaching more than three months when the girls in her class asked her to be their Camp Fire Leader. Her continuing leadership in the Camp Fire program saw her teach and inspire 5 different groups of girls over a period of 28 years, until 1976. Through her leadership and accomplishments in the program, she was the recipient of the Luther Halsey Gulick Camp Fire Award, the highest award given by Campfire to a volunteer. Ruth was a prominent member of the Lady Lions Club in Arlington, twice presiding as President of the club, serving with enthusiasm and purpose. Projects in which she participated include selling bonds for a new hospital in Arlington, fireworks stand, selling pies and working the rest area. Since its merger with the Lions Club, she has continued as an active Arlington Lions Club member. In addition, Ruth has given of her talent and love for music and dance to other Arlington organizations including the Arlington United Church, where, as a member since 1960, she taught Sunday school and since 1975 served as pianist and choir director. She also volunteered as a pianist for a weekly service at the Arlington Manor and organized, taught and called square dancing at Lake Goodwin Community Club. One of the most significant impacts Ruth was able to make for the community of Arlington and the surrounding area were her years teaching preschool which started with 2 classes of 12 students each in 1963. She served as the head of the Arlington Co-operative Preschool for four of those years. The school was so successful that there was a waiting list and the school continued to flourish for 37 years until her retirement in 2000. More than 2000 children found friends and learned life skills including independence, cooperation and confidence through Ruth’s dedication, excitement and passion for teaching of young minds. For all of the above, and more, the Stillaguamish Senior Center was pleased to present its Lifetime Achievement Award to Ruth Munizza. Sincerely, Jo Olson Executive Director WELCOME The mission of the Stillaguamish Senior Center is to provide services to all seniors, that enhance the quality of life, limit isolation & prevent any need for institutionalization.
