COLLECTING AND CURATING –
A POSITIONAL SHIFT IN THE ART SCENE?
The cultural, social and economic importance of exhibitions has increased
significantly over the past few years. This is mainly due to the greater mobility of
people, objects and information, as reflected in the biennial culture, as well as to
the increased importance of culture for the economic development of cities and
regions. Today, there are over 100 art biennials all over the world that compete with
each other for attention, relevance, and visitors. In addition, there are also triennial,
quadrennial and documenta exhibitions.
This year‘s F.A.Z. art conference on 27 November 2014 is dedicated to the topic of
collecting and curating and will explore the issue of positional shifts in the art scene
in this context.
TOPICS
Is the » canon of competence« shifting from museum curators to collectors due
to the increased confidence of collectors?
Are there positional shifts between artists and curators, i.e., has the curatorial
become more important than art itself?
What are the strategies and methods of curating compared with those of art?
What is the aesthetic, social and political potential of the curatorial approach?

Cafe Moskau is a symbol of Berlin, like the TV tower, the Brandenburg
Gate and the Reichstag. Built in the early 1960s near Alexanderplatz as a showpiece of pioneering architectural design, the complex
represents a high point of modernist GDR architecture, typifying
Berlin civic culture and marking the dawning of a new era.
