FROM THE PRINCIPAL: MR. PETER GUTTERIDGE
Dear Parents,
While the end of the year rapidly approaches, life at St. Brigid’s has never been busier. We are now heavily into the
preparation of a number of key events for this term: Our Year 10 Presentation Ball, new staff appointments, 2015 Timetable,
Master Plan development and examination preparation and revision for our Year 12 students. The list goes on.
STUDENT PLANNERS
After surveying all Year 7 – 11 students in regards to the choice of either hard copy planner or e-planner, the overwhelming
response from the students was to return to a hard copy planner. Staff were also in favour of this response. We are currently
discerning the information that will be incorporated into the “St. Brigid’s” section of the planner. The Student
Responsibilities Handbook will be a central platform for this section as it clearly sets out our expectations of the students in
the many aspects of their school life.
MARGARET SIMONDS BURSARIES
These bursaries honour the memory of Margaret Simonds and we give recognition to her visionary work in the adult
educational field. The late Margaret Simonds was the founder of On Track Learning in the late 1980s and she established a
network of local literacy coordinators around the region to provide volunteer tutors to literacy students. Margaret possessed
the following qualities and attributes: Faith, Leadership, Innovation, Inner strength, Vision, Perseverance, Communication,
Lateral thinking, Humour and Enterprise.
The recipients of these bursaries will possess and demonstrate these attributes and qualities. Margaret Simonds bursaries
cover tuition fees to the value of $1000 for students enrolled at St. Brigid’s for 2015. These bursaries are available to any
currently enrolled student from Year 7 through to Year 11 in 2014. Application forms can be obtained from either the Front
Office or on our website under “School Community” and must be returned by Monday, 10th November. Late applications will
not be accepted.
STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL
The Student Representative Council is made up of 3 students from each of our four Houses: Clontarf, Kildare,
Melleray and Tara. Each homeroom is currently nominating a Senior SRC and Junior SRC student for 2015. Ballot
papers will be then developed for each House and final voting for both SRCs occurring tomorrow morning. The
Junior SRC is a new initiative for 2015 with the need to ensure that our junior cohorts have a voice in the routine of
our College. Successful applicants will be announced in next week’s newsletter.
COLLEGE ADVISORY COUNCIL
The AGM of our College Advisory Council will be held in the library on Wednesday, October 22nd commencing at
7.30pm.
SCHOOL CLOSURE DAY
Advanced warning that Monday, 3rd November will be a School Closure day. There will also be no classes on
Tuesday, 4th November due to Melbourne Cup Day.
DEEPEST SYMPATHY
We offer our prayerful support to staff member, Gareth Pohlner and student, Ashlyn O’Brien (Yr 8) on the recent
death of Lorna Pohlner, Gareth’s Grandmother and Ashlyn’s Great Grandmother and to the Fischer family on the
recent death of Ian Fischer, Grandfather of Axel (Yr 9). Our prayers and thoughts are with you all at this time.
Yours in the community of St. Brigid’s College
Peter Gutteridge

On Tuesday 14th October the Year 11 VCE Industry and Enterprise students decided to be entrepreneurs
for a day and run their own business, a BBQ and Ice Cream stand, 'Don't be a dag, grab a snag'. This
business venture turned out to be very successful and the students raised a total of $191 that will now be
donated to 'The Make a Wish Foundation'
We would like to thank the generosity of our local businesses, Bakers Delight, for donating all of the
bread, Horsham Plaza Meats for their donation of sausages and Coles Supermarket for their $50 donation
of goods. Without your support, this would not be possible.
