Three Islands and a Motorbike
After spending a fantastic summer cruising
around the Ionian Islands in our yacht, my
husband and I decided to do a little island
hopping on our motorbike. We set off from
our home base in Vassiliki, Lefkada,
travelled to Patra on the mainland, then
hopped by ferry to Zakynthos, Kefalonia
and then back home to Lefkada. A four day
round trip of approximately 450 kilometres.
We set off on the 9th September in glorious
weather and took the coast road via Paleros,
Mytikas, Astakos, then inland to
Messolonghi and on to Patra. For car
drivers and bikers alike, this is a
spectacular route with breathtaking
scenery. The views of Kastos and Kalamos
were particularly impressive. It took
approx. 3.5 hours to get to our hotel in
Patra and this included a coffee and lunch
stop en route. We stayed at the Astir Hotel
(www.hotelastirpatras.gr) at a cost of 48.00
euro for the room and 4.00 for garage
parking. This grand, slightly faded hotel is
in a great location (walking distance from
all the action in Patra). Patra is a
University city and is buzzing with great
shops, bars and tavernas.
by Debbie White
From the town, we travelled a short
distance to the tourist resort of Kalamaki.
We picked this location because it seemed a
good base to visit the turtle beaches in the
south and the spectacular mountain area of
Keri and, of course, take a peek at the
notorious tourist area of Laganas. We
stayed at Aeolos Boutique Resort
(www.aeolos-resort.gr) in a delightful studio
for 35.00 euro. All the resort areas in this
location are focussed on British visitors so
‘pubs’, English breakfast, Indian food and
draft beer are the order of the day.
However, for the one night we stayed here,
we found it a great base and food and drink
were excellent value. A visit to the village of
Keri and the sunset viewing area nearby is
an absolute must.
The following morning after a full English
breakfast costing 3.45 euro each (well, when
in Rome…!), we set off for a more Greek
experience. The ride across the fertile plain
from Kalamaki in the south to Ayios
Nikolaos in the north was beautiful. We
passed through typical Greek villages and
lush countryside seemingly untouched by
tourism. We arrive at Skinari, which is
approx. 1 km from Ayios Nikolaos, home of
the famous blue caves. We checked into The
Blue House Studios, 31.00 euro including a
very basic breakfast
(www.bluehousestudios.gr) and headed for
the port. Everybody and his dog offer blue
cave trips. We took the first on offer and
paid 10 euro each for a one hour trip,
including a swim, in a small glass bottom
boat. This turned out to be a good choice as
the boat could fit inside all the caves. The
water is indeed inky blue and our captain
took great delight in showing us coral, fish,
and high rocky ledges inside the caves from
which diving was encouraged! The best time
to visit is in the morning as there are less
boats and less swell.
Trips to the famous Shipwreck beach are
also on offer here but we’d had our fill and
so, back on the bike we headed north along
the coast road towards the lighthouse. We
found a great taverna for lunch, right on the
cliff top with access down to the blue caves
for swimming or boat trips. Accommodation
is also available in one of two windmills
(www.potamitisbros.gr).
The next day we set off for the ferry port at
Kyllini, approx 1.5 hours away from our
hotel. The cost for two people and a ‘moto’ to
Zakynthos was 29.00 euro and the very
pleasant journey took just one hour. We had
heard mixed reports about the town of
Zakynthos, but on arrival we found it a
lovely place to wander around, with lots of
narrow alleyways, beautiful flowers and
interesting shops.
The next day, we said goodbye to our very
friendly Greek hotel owner and the resident
cockerel and caught the 9.45 ferry (26.00
euro in total) from the port at Ayios
Nikolaos to Pessadha in the south of
Kefalonia, a residential area where the
village road ends in a slip for the ferry.
From here we meandered through the
countryside to Argostoli and then took the
coast road onward to Fiskardho. The views
were spectacular. However, we made a big
mistake not taking the Sami route as a
small section of the road near Assos had
been completely lost in the recent
earthquake and we had a 10 km diversion
over the mountain. Going up on our moto
was bad enough but at the top the tarmac
disappeared and we descended all the way
down on gravel. Not for the faint hearted.
On reaching Fiskardho, we checked into the
Fiscado Studios complex
(www.fiscadostudios.com), which was
situated right in the heart of the village. At
40 euro for a small studio, this was
excellent value and is highly recommended.
Fiskardho, as most of us know, is a
beautiful place to wander around and we
spent a lovely afternoon and evening taking
in the sights, all topped off with a great
Thai meal in The Lord Falcon
(lordfalcon.com).
The next day was the final leg of our
journey. We caught the 11.15 ferry (26.50
euro in total) from Fiskardho to Vassiliki
and so arrived back home. It had been a
great way to see the interior of these
beautiful Ionian Islands and something that
we will repeat again. The road conditions
were excellent for biking (apart from the
diversion) and the ease of hopping from one
island to another via ferry made this a
thoroughly enjoyable short break!

epic moment.

taking a few snaps along the way.
Off to a good start (for us) in Class
Two for Vassiliki.
Let’s be clear. This is a 53 year old
wooden boat we’re talking about.
Three years ago, Westerling, a 28ft
Holman Sterling was destined to
become a heap of firewood until our
dear friend, Ruairi Bradley, told us
to buy it as he’d hate to see us being
idle on our new island home. More
blood sweat and tears than either of
us care to remember – especially not
the hospitalisation (him) or the acute
allergic bronchitis (me) - we were
ready to rock and roll or tack and
jibe if you fancy some nautical
parlance.
We’d barely hung a right out of the
bay and the wind started to blow.
Full sails up and she was going
nicely. I felt we could have water
skied behind – if either of us could
water ski. “I’ll put the Number Two
up if the wind gets a bit stronger,”
said himself, doing his best sea dog
impersonation, tiller in hand.
We had attempted the Southern
Ionian Rally a year ago, but our
chances were scuppered even before
the start as we were taking on water
faster than an ex-pat downs Land of
Lefkas wine. So back to this year, we
had our satisfying sponge moment,
motored to the start of Race One in
Poros Bay. All so relaxing, leisurely
lunch, virtually no wind (my kind of
A bit never happened. From a
pleasant 20 knots the wind shot to
30 plus stupid knots. Below a reenactment of the Wreck of the

be fair we hadn’t lashed a small child
to the mast .Too late I remembered I
hadn’t closed the portholes.
Gunwales in water we raced along.
Funny, the faster we went the slower
the log read. Oh. That would be
because the speed impeller wasn’t
always in the water. Argghhh!
Meanwhile, off stage someone was
regularly emptying buckets of
seawater over us, while himself
played the tiller and I accompanied
on the very taught jib sheet. A boat
passed us, well, let’s be honest, lots
of boats passed us, one occupant
shouted we had a very clean bottom.
Always good to hear.
A right into Vas and no mention of
the Number Two going up. Come to
think of it, he had never shown any
Spidermanlike qualities and I’m a
Nana, who generally likes to wear a
nice cardi. It was never going to
happen. A few more tacks to the
finish line, which we barely saw as
our eyeballs were stinging with salt
water. Somehow we managed to
wave nonchalantly at the grinning
occupants on the committee boat
while clinging on at 45 degrees.
Safely tied up to our new Germanic
friend, Harald and his son, Heike,
we drank Alfa and just like post
childbirth immediately forgot the
pain. Later downstairs (sorry below)
himself lifted the floorboards. “One
spongeful,” he said.

Home Wanted - Dog of the month
I've had Dixie now since the middle of January.
She was sterilised and chipped with LAWS at the end of January and has had the relevant
injections against distemper, hepatitis and parvovirus, rabies and canine leptospriosis
With the vet’s advice we estimate she is abut 4 years old.
She is timid, but getting better - she will really need someone with a bit of time to get her
confidence levels up.
She is very wary of men and not keen on cars.
She is fine with my cats and other dog and women generally.
She does not get sick in cars, but is not a relaxed traveller, again nervous.
She lives outside most of the time, but when she has been inside she is nervous but does
not make a mess or chew things.
She will need to be re-homed gently as she is a timid dog but she has a strong character and
is intelligent. I don't think it would be too difficult to train her
I'd love to see her have a good home, because she really has a lot of love to give and wants
to do so, she's just not sure how as no one has ever bothered to gain her trust before, but I
really think she will make a lovely companion with love and attention.

The Secret Diary of an Expat ...Part 2
(the names have been changed to protect the innocent)
Day 2
I woke up late because I was so tired. So I made
some coffee and didn't have milk for it. Everyone
knows how grumpy I get without my proper coffee.
I headed to the pool and a blessing happened: I
meet a lady from Athens who used to live in
England her name is Maria.
Maria is going to take me to the supermarket and
yacht club so I can email everyone and let them
know I'm okay.
Okay so it's 4 pm and I realise I'm going to the
supermarket and yacht club at 7 pm.
Guess what! I have no shampoo to wash my greasy
hair. Don't ever use dish washing liquid on your
hair. Afterwards I couldn't get a broom in my
hair, Well, I look like the Fonz but am ready to go
with Maria.
First, let me tell you about Maria. She is great
friends of Mr. K. They met each other in Athens,
and are *just friends* Maria is in public relations.
She is putting together an event in Rome the first
week of September that is going to be attended by
the who's who of European society. Of course I
don't know who any of them are.
She starts to tell me about Mr. K's family having a
long history in government and that his parents
have a summer home here. So Mr. K had a dream
to build in this area and that's what he started 5
years ago.
During the course of the evening at his yacht club,
I find out from Maria, he has 2 children and is
divorced.
He walks in and I feel like I'm in a dream. He is
gorgeous. We shake hands.
Maria says, “ Mr K and you Kate, have a lot in
common. You sold everything in and moved
here.” I was shocked. He told us he was raised
and schooled in Paris, moved to Athens, had a
business, sold everything and is following his
dreams.
“Breathe”, I said to myself and than said to him
“so is the dream finished?” He looked at me with
those blue eyes and said softly “not yet”.
Maria gets up to go to the bathroom and I turn to
Mr. K and said “okay, we have 5 minutes to
discuss this.”
I said to him “I just need a car to get the hell away
from you and I want to move to Lefkada
So that you stop helping me and we don't see each
other everyday.” He replied “why would you want
that” and I said “I can't deal with you and the
girlfriend”. “Okay” he said.
car, so I made tuna with pistachios for lunch.
I know it sounds awful but it was delightful. I have
fruit for breakfast and so far I have been to the
toilet 6 times today. It's like my body is cleansing
itself.
Maria returns. Ten minutes later, out of the blue
Mr. K said “I have a car you can use.
George the maintenance man is cleaning it up for
you tonight and will bring over for you to try
tomorrow.”
After the healthy lunch, I need a beer, so I walk 2
miles to the local taverna. A million questions
later, they find out I'm staying in Mr. K's
apartments. I tried to be allusive but Helen (the
daughter of the owner) pressed me till I
surrendered.
I know I shouldn't take it, but I need groceries,
wine and a way out from being near him or I'm
going to have a problem.
As we were getting ready to leave, a nice couple
walked in and introduced themselves. It's Mr. K's
parents and guess what! They are going to live
next door to me while their summer home gets
renovated.
I meet his parents, and then we are joined by his
secret business partner . Over a glass of wine we
find out he is married to Mr. K's cousin.
His name is Panos and Maria is totally in love
with him after only just meeting him.
It's 2 am and I'm exhausted. I'm hiding tomorrow
or I'll die from all this excitement.
Well, I couldn't sleep..shocking! So I got up
at 8am and made some big decisions:
1. I'm going to walk or run at least 1 mile a day
and swim at least 30 minutes a day. I want to
wear a bikini by spring. Every woman here
regardless of size wears a bikini. I stand out like
a sore thumb in a swimsuit.
2. I'm going to spend a half hour a day learning
Greek.
3. I want to quit smoking! Pray for me on this
one.
I couldn't get any perishable items at the
supermarket last night due to leaving it in Maria's
No sign of the parents or my car yet, but it's
only midday.
It is now 2pm, guess what that means, siesta time,
a 2 hour nap.
I finally see George and he tells me the car has
been in the garage and needs lots of maintenance,
so he will fix everything and I should have car in 2
days.
I see Maria and she is a little distant, probably
because I don't know who the famous people are
that she talks about on stop.
I decide to stay in and get more sleep.
I wake up from a dead sleep at 11:30 pm with the
strangest feeling that I am being protected and
watched over. I have no fear here and I feel so at
home. .

Step platforms are provided but if you prefer not to use one, just do the
class on the floor – which, by the way, is laid for Judo and so is a great
support for joints. Cool down as above.
WHEN: This year we start with aerobics on Wednesday 22 nd October and step on
Friday 24th October.
WHERE: At the Closed Gymnasium at Milos Beach, along near the lagoon
COST: Although I do not receive payment, I have to charge a fee for the use of the
room which goes towards the school upkeep. This is €5 per month which I think you
will agree is very little for all 8 classes!
CLOTHING: Loose or stretchy trousers/leggings and top. Trainers or soft-soled shoes
Come along and give it a try - the music is great, we always have fun and nobody
goes around trying to look like Jane Fonda (except me J!) I’m sure you’ll really enjoy
keeping fit.
