Why choose Bury College?
Financial support
Bury College University Centre is now able to offer
additional support if you are progressing directly
from a Bury College level 3 full-time course onto a
full-time course at Bury College University Centre.
The £500 bursary will be paid each academic year
of your course in two instalments and will be
available to assist you during your time with us.
Eligibility for bursary
In order for you to receive the above bursary you must
meet the following criteria:
• You must have commenced an undergraduate course
of study in September 2015 or later at Bury College
University Centre and be paying full tuition fees of
£5996. Fees must be paid via tuition fee loan or you
must be self-funded.
• You must be a full-time UK/EU undergraduate studying
one of the following higher education courses at Bury
College University Centre:
- Beauty Management HND
- Business and Enterprise (FdA)
- Criminology and Sociology BSc (Hons)
- Design in Media Make-up (FdSc)
- Education and Learning BA (Hons)
- Events Management BSc (Hons)

• The bursary will be paid to you on your first higher
education course and not on subsequent courses.

academic year 2014/15.
• Payments will be made in two instalments (50% in
October and 50% in February) of each consecutive
academic year of undergraduate study subject to
achieving at least 90% attendance and satisfactory
academic progress.
• Payments will be terminated if you withdraw, are
suspended, transfer to another institution or fail
your programme of study.

University of Bolton
Facilities at the University of Bolton include a new suite
of buildings housing a multi-million pound Students
Union and Student Learning Zone. The University has
also recently opened a new £31 million sports, health
and research centre in partnership with Bolton Council
and the town’s primary care trust.

Accommodation
The Pack Horse private student
halls of residence
Whilst studying at Bury College University
Centre you may require accommodation.
Living away from home while you study can
be a worthwhile experience, helping you
make friends and gain life skills for the future.
The Pack Horse is located in the heart of Bolton, close to the
university and to transport links to Bury College University
Centre. This period building was recently re-opened as
boutique living accommodation to provide a welcoming
social environment for students living away from home. The
Pack Horse offers three types of room, in a range of prices,
and you will also have access to a range of facilities situated
in the building including a gym, lounge area with pool
tables, table tennis and vending machines, laundry facilities,
communal reading room and study area and secure cycle
storage. Additionally, the accommodation is managed by
PRIMO Property Management, a student management
company which has ANUK National Code Accreditation.
Although we don’t have our own halls of residence you
may apply to live in halls of residence at the University
of Bolton or the University of Salford or choose to source
your own private accommodation.
Bury College provides a free coach service which runs
from Bolton to Bury on a daily basis. For further details

Student Services at the University of Bolton are able to
advise you even before you leave home and can help
with halls allocations, addresses for private landlords
and many other aspects of student accommodation in
Bolton. There are two halls of residence, both of which
provide single study bedrooms.
Halls places are offered on a self-catering basis which
gives you the freedom to shop and cook as you wish.
Both halls are close to all the amenities of Bolton town
centre and are convenient for both road and rail links.

specific requirements. In September 2015 the doors open
to our new £81m student accommodation complex with
en-suite bedrooms and an on-site cinema room, gym, TV

Want to go to university but need the right qualifications?
About the course:
The Access to Higher Education qualification is an essential
progression course if you do not have an appropriate level 3
qualification and would like to study at degree level.
All Bury College Access to Higher Education diplomas meet
the stringent requirements of the Quality Assurance Agency
for Higher Education and progression of our students onto
a wide range of degree programmes is excellent.
It is the ideal way to prepare for university for those who have
left school without the necessary qualifications and now have
the ambition to study for a degree. There are three diplomas to
choose from, which are outlined on this page. In addition, each
diploma will also develop essential study skills and IT skills to
ensure you are fully prepared to progress to university.
In addition to the compulsory modules, you will study three
level 3 subjects (diploma dependent) from English Language,
English Literature, Health Studies, Health Sciences (Biology),
Social Work, Sociology, Psychology and Education. Alongside
an Access to Higher Education diploma, an increasing
number of degree programmes require you to have GCSEs in
English Language and Maths. These qualifications may be
added to your programme of study.
Attendance: Part-time, three to four days a week
Duration: 1 year
Assessment is varied and includes course work throughout
the year and external exams in the summer term.

Entry requirements:
You will be invited to attend a recruitment evening which
includes a presentation, assessment and an interview.

About the course:
This course aims to prepare you for a university degree in an
art and design subject. Highly valued by many universities
as an entry requirement, the subject offers a broad range of
disciplines to build your core skills in observation and visual
awareness. An intensive, practical programme, the course
covers: drawing, painting, printmaking, photography,
graphics, 3D design and fashion.

beauty industry. You will learn new practical techniques or

This course is designed to give you the edge to succeed in a
busy and thriving sector. It is a vocationally-orientated course
and provides a practical focus to the study of business
management. You will develop the knowledge and skills to

About the course:
This is a teacher training course for non-graduates who wish
to teach in the post-compulsory sector of education. This
includes: adult and community education, further education,
sixth form colleges, universities, the prison and probation
services, pre-employment training and work-based learning.
Your choice of study will depend on the subject and area in
which you wish to teach. For teaching in a vocational and/or
academic curriculum area you will choose the Generic
pathway. For teaching ESOL, literacy or numeracy in the
lifelong learning sector you will choose the Skills for Life
pathway. If you choose this option, you will select your
specialist area at the time of your application. The full Cert Ed
14+ award equates to the PDE. Teaching placements are
arranged for you in situations which meet the requirements

Professional Graduate Certificate in Education 14 +
About the course:
This is a teacher training course for graduates who wish to
teach in the post-compulsory sector of education; for
example, in adult and community education, further
education, sixth form colleges, the prison and probation
services, pre-employment training and work-based learning.
Your choice of study will depend on the subject and area in
which you wish to teach. For teaching in a vocational and/or
academic curriculum area you will choose the Generic
pathway. For teaching ESOL, literacy or numeracy in the
lifelong learning sector you will choose the Skills for Life
pathway. If you choose this option, you will select your
specialist area at the time of your application. As part of your
studies you will be required to carry out a teaching placement
that may involve daytime or evening teaching or both.
Attendance: Full-time: You will be required to attend classes
10am-3pm two days a week. You should also be available for

Teaching Assistants (Primary) Foundation Degree (FdA)
About the course:
This course provides you with the ideal opportunity to acquire
the knowledge and skills you will need as a teaching assistant
in primary education in the UK. You will be provided with the
opportunity to seek employment in an education setting, or
you may seek to advance your existing career in the primary
school sector. There is a strong partnership between the
University of Bolton, Bury College and the Local Authority.
Topics covered:
Level 4 (Year 1):
Research and Study Skills, Trends and Issues, Planning Delivery
and Assessment of Learning, Theory and Practice of Learning.
At the start of the programme you will be allocated a personal
tutor who will work with you throughout the programme.
One of the first steps is to work with your tutor to develop
your Individual Learning Plan. This is a process that starts at
the interview stage and continues through the course to
assist with the integration of the theory and the practical
work-based elements of the programme.
Level 5 (Year 3):
Reflective Practice, Work-Based Practice (Action Inquiry Project),
Work-Based Practice (Reflection on the Work Setting).
Attendance: Part-time
Level 4 (Year 2):
Inclusive Education, Supporting Language and Literacy,

Special features:
You will be assessed by a variety of methods including: short
presentations, reflections on observations/tasks carried out
in the work place, case studies and essays. Your tutor will visit
you in your place of work at least once in the first year and at
least once in the second year.

Entry requirements:
Applicants will normally have a Level 3 qualification in an
appropriate area. You must also have 5 GCSEs at grade C or
above (or equivalent) including Maths and English, plus
written communication skills at Level 3 and good oral
communication skills. You need to be working in a school as a
teaching assistant on a voluntary or employed basis and must
have agreement from your head teacher about undertaking
the programme. The appropriate support should be made
available to you in your school. You will also have to attend an
interview and receive a satisfactory enhanced DBS check
(costing approximately £44). If you do not have the normal
entry requirements but have relevant work experience or an
alternative qualification you may still be eligible for the course.
Career and professional development:
You may apply to progress to an Honours Degree or to
qualified teacher status or to become a Higher Level
Teaching Assistant (HLTA).

AAT Business Skills Higher Apprenticeship Level 4
About the course:
If you already work in accounting and would like to further
your career in this sector, this course offers an excellent
starting point to gaining the skills and qualifications you need
whilst in the workplace. The qualification will allow you to
progress to full membership of the Association of Accounting
Technicians and can lead to a professional accountancy
qualification with a chartered body such as ICAEW, ACCA,
CIMA, CIPFA, AIA or ICAS. Successfully completing the higher
apprenticeship offers a fast track route onto chartered studies
through exemptions from certain parts of the syllabus. You
will also hold AAT membership and MAAT status.
Attendance: This programme is delivered in the workplace,
however attendance at Bury College University Centre is
required one evening per week.
Duration: 14 months

This qualification is ideal if you are an assistant or deputy

services, this qualification fulfils the regulatory requirements
for this role and is equivalent to a foundation degree.

About the course:
If you work in the IT industry or have a level of responsibility
for computing within your organisation, this qualification will
help you develop your technical knowledge. The industry as a
whole is looking for 142,000 new workers over the next three
years, so the career prospects are excellent.
Attendance: This programme is delivered in the
workplace; however, attendance at Bury College University
Centre is required for one evening per week during term time.

The higher apprenticeship consists of two separate
qualifications, and both have mandatory units. In addition we
will work with you and your employer to choose a range of

Telecoms Professionals and BTEC Level Higher National
