Our Architecture BA Honours degree is your
first step towards qualification as a
professional architect.
What you will study
You will work with and learn from leading professionals, who
will teach you how to think, not what to think.
You are introduced to the design process through a series
of study visits and design projects, gradually developing
your architectural thinking, skills and knowledge.
It is accredited by the Royal Institute of British
Architects (RIBA) and provides exemption from
the RIBA Part I examination.
These projects increase in complexity during the degree,
giving you the opportunity to showcase your growing skills.
This design-based degree provides you with
the opportunity to develop your design ideas.

Professional accreditation
This degree is professionally accredited and prescribed by
the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the
Architects Registration Board (ARB).
Successful completion of this degree satisfies ARB
requirements and provides exemption from the RIBA Part 1.
This is the first step towards qualifying as an architect.
Following on from this degree, Newcastle University
offers further professional qualifications that give
unconditional exemption from the RIBA and ARB
examinations, taking you to qualification as a registered
architect. This means you would not need to change

About the School
As an architecture student at Newcastle, you will join one of
the largest and most dynamic Schools of its kind in Europe.
We are one of the few academic schools in the UK focusing
exclusively on the built environment. Our expertise spans
architecture, planning, urban design, digital architecture,
urban conservation and landscape architecture, bringing
breadth and depth to your study programme.

The Route to becoming a Registered
Architect
Completing our Architecture BA Honours degree is the first
step towards qualifying as an architect. Newcastle University
also offers further professional architecture courses, which
give unconditional exemption from the RIBA and ARB
examinations and take you to qualification as a Registered
Architect.
Graduate Certificate in Architectural Practice
The Certificate in Architectural Practice (CAP) is a one-year
programme that involves several short courses at the
University and self-study assignments during the year,
which students complete while spending a year in practice
working as an architectural assistant either in Britain or
abroad. For more information about the CAP, including

Teaching is largely through studio design projects
supported by lectures and personal research
A typical week will involve working in the studio, either in
groups developing design projects or working

Master of Architecture MArch
Completion of this course leads to the degree of Master of
Architecture and gives exemption from the RIBA Part II
examination. It is based on project work that focuses on
culturally and technologically complex public buildings. You
also develop a design thesis, often building on your practice
experiences. Professional practice and management are
integrated into the programme, preparing you for the final
phase of professional training. There are study opportunities
with European universities, the National University of
Singapore, and the University of Sydney in Australia.

Master of Architecture MArch
Diploma in Architectural Practice and
Management
This is the final qualification for entry into the profession as
an ARB-Registered Architect and for membership of the
RIBA. It covers professional and business aspects of work,
and is taken part time while you work as an architectural
assistant.

Modules
Our degrees are divided into Stages. Each Stage lasts for
an academic year and you need to complete modules
totalling 120 credits by the end of each Stage.

Important Information for All Students

All candidates must submit a portfolio as part of the
application process. Further guidance on what to submit
and how will be given when the portfolio is requested.
A Levels
AAA excluding General Studies and Critical Thinking. All
candidates will be required to submit a portfolio for review
as part of the selection process. GCSE grade B in
Mathematics and English required if not taken at a higher
level.
Scottish Qualifications
AAAAA at Higher Grade including Mathematics and English.
All candidates will be required to submit a portfolio for
review as part of the selection process. Where a candidate
bypasses the assessment for National 5 qualifications, a
minimum of grade C in the Higher in Maths and English is
required.
International Baccalaureate
A minimum of 37 points. All candidates will be required to
submit a portfolio for review as part of the selection process.
Standard Level Mathematics or Mathematical Studies
required at grade 5 if not offered at Higher Level.
Irish Leaving Certificate
A1A1A1AB at Higher Level. All candidates will be required
to submit a portfolio for review as part of the selection
process.
Access Qualifications
30 Level 3 Credits at Distinction, preferably to include art or
design. 15 Level 3 credits at Merit. All candidates will be
required to submit a portfolio for review as part of the
selection process. GCSE Maths grade B or Pass in Level 2
Maths required.
BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (formerly BTEC

In an Art/Design subject at overall DDD. All candidates will

Cambridge Pre-U
D3,D3,D3 in Principal Subjects. All candidates will be

Architecture Careers
The BA in Architecture is the first step towards qualification
as a professional architect. The vast majority of our
graduates choose to follow their degree with a year’s
employment as an architectural assistant in an architect’s
practice.
To proceed on to full qualification a further two years of
university study is required (for example, the Master of
Architecture), which must then be followed by a further two
years of professional work experience and final exams.
With a vocational subject such as architecture, the main
employment pathway is into the profession as an architect.
Newcastle graduates have an envious position in the job
market and are well received by architectural practices.
In addition, architectural education at Newcastle places a
