U.S. Industrial Production (1928-1939)
Mass production has to be applied by mass consumption. Instead of this kind of distribution during the
1930's, wealth was drawn into the hands of the few for increasing produced wealth. By taking increased
produced-wealth out of the hands of the many, and having it in the hands of the few, there were less jobs
and money to go around. As a consequence, the chips were concentrated in fewer and fewer hands. The
others could only stay in the game by borrowing. When their credit ran out, the game stopped.
No time for ideology
Franklin D. Roosevelt was no ideologue. He was an inveterate economic tinkerer.

FDR is considered one of the best U.S.
presidents by many historical scholars.
Some rank Roosevelt with Lincoln and
Washington. There's a historical parallel
here. Washington's help in founding our
Nation, Lincoln keeping our Republic
t o g e t h e r r e s u l t i n g i n C i v i l Wa r, a n d
Roosevelt possibly saving our democracy
during the Great Depression.
The last time the U.S. installed a new
president at a time when its stock market
had fallen more than 50%, Roosevelt had

some famously
calming words: "We
have nothing to fear
but fear itself."
FDR addressed fear
over 80-years ago.
He was right that
fear itself could have
real and damaging
effects. The Great
FDR was no dogmatic
man. He once described Depression changed
himself as a "juggler."

them live through the 1930's and changed
the future of this country forever.
Franklin knew the truth, two years before
his election ample credit was available
at low rates but still businesses and
people were reluctant to add new debt by
borrowing, By May of 1930, auto sales had
declined to levels below 1928.
funded programs aimed at restoring the
economy, relieving the suffering of the
unemployed, and reforming our system.
FDR followed no political dogma but
instead would consider an array of different
considerations for improving the economy.
Some worked, others didn't.
Prices in general began to decline, but
wages held steady in 1930, then began
to drop in 1931. Conditions were worst
i n fa rmi n g area s, w h e re co mm o d i t y
prices plunged. In 1930, 25% of the U.S.
population lived on 6-million farms.
One of his favorite ploys was to pull aside
somebody as Secretary of Commerce
Ickes, and whisper, "Harold, you're the
best man I have for this question. Now
I want you to thoroughly research this
matter and get back to me on it. But keep
it a secret, don't tell anybody else." Then
Roosevelt would say the same thing to
Labor Secretary Frances Perkins, Treasury
Secretary Henry Morgenthau, Jr., top
adviser Harry Hopkins, and other members
of his cabinet and advisory team.
After Roosevelt assumed the presidency,
he promoted a wide variety of federally-

but he wanted flexibility to tinker with the
choices and follow his political instincts.
Although often recommended, one thing
Roosevelt steadfastly refused to do was
run up government spending deficits.
Some historians felt his refusal to increase
deficit spending may of prolonged the
Depression.
The Great Depression was long and deep.
No one had any money. They were all in
the same circumstance. Neighbors helped
each other through hard times, sickness,
and accidents. Families got together with
neighbors at school programs, church
dinners, or dances. Children and adults
found ways to have fun for free---playing
board games, listening to the radio, or
going to outdoor movies.
It wasn't really Roosevelt, it was the
American people. It was an age of
self-sacrifice. It was our fathers' and
grandfathers' time. They were better than
we are.
Unlike common perception, the Great
Depression wasn't a sudden collapse. The
stock market turned upward in early 1930,
returning to early 1929 levels before the
October crash.
Together, government and business
actually spent more in the 1st half of 1930
than was spent in the stock market the
previous year.
The decline in the U.S. economy was
the factor that pulled down most other
countries at first, then internal weaknesses
or strengths in each country made
conditions better or worse. By late 1930, a
steady decline set in which reached bottom
by March 1933.

Watershed
A Watershed Era relates with events in
history. It's a juncture of where history
changes direction. The Great Depression
certainly changed this country's direction. It
was a landmark in our nation's history.
The Great Depression was a worldwide
economic downturn starting in most places
in 1929, and ending at different times in the
1 9 3 0 ' s o r e a r l y 1 9 4 0 ' s f o r d i ff e r e n t
countries. It was the largest and most
important economic depression in modern
history. It's used as the 21st century
benchmark as how the world economy can
fail.
The United States of America got out of the
Depression with the war economy of World
War II, beginning in 1939. The price was
countless American lives at war.■

said Rick Arcaro, V.P. of Hyd-Mech Sales &

open houses I’ve done in years. The traffic
that came through was excellent. They had
plenty of machines on display.” Relationships
are not only important with users but just as
important with new equipment and tooling
suppliers a company represents.
“The dinner at night with all the vendors,
where everybody stayed together and enjoyed
some time with each other. It was very
unique,” Arcaro said. “Most distributors
don’t do that but this is all part of Westbrook
being a class act organization.”
Legacy
Al Szarek, once told this writer, “Stay
positive.” It was a fitting tribute to the man
that said it. His sons have not only stayed
positive but embraced the manufacturing of
the future. Eighteen years later, Al’s sons
have kept bridging from their father’s era to
a new era. An era of new developments in
materials, information technology, production
processes and manufacturing operations. Our
new era helps Westbrook’s customers design
and build new kinds of products and reinvent
existing ones.
