The Honor Flight
One of our July Lunch & Learn programs highlighted the Honor Flight Northeast Indiana (HFNEI).
As I listened to Camille Garrison, HFNEI board
member and representative of
Kingston Healthcare, I was in
awe of what this all volunteer
organization is doing for our
veterans. In May 2004, the
World War II Memorial was
completed and dedicated, and
the following year the inaugural
Honor Flight flew 12 veterans
from
Springfield, Ohio, to our
Deana Croussore,
Community Affairs capital to visit the memorial.
Now, the Honor Flight Network
Supervisor
has 137 hubs in 43 states,
including our own Honor Flight Northeast Indiana.
An astounding average of 18,000 veterans per year
make the flight to Washington, D.C. Currently,
top priority is given to WWII survivors, along
with veterans of other wars who are terminally ill.
Prior to the Lunch & Learn presentation, I was
unaware that each trip lasts a single day. The
veterans start their day at about 6 a.m. and arrive
back in Fort Wayne around 9:30 p.m. In those 15
hours, they fly round trip and visit the WWII
Memorial, as well as the Korean, Vietnam and
Lincoln memorials. They also watch the changing
of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
in Arlington National Cemetery.
According to Camille, the veterans are showered
with smiles and thank yous throughout the trip
LutheranHealth.net
from the volunteers, flight and bus staff, airport
crowds waiting for their own flights, members
of congress and the general public. The veterans
are often surprised and moved to tears by the
outpouring of appreciation they receive. “They
don’t think of themselves as heroes. They just
did what they had to do. Then, when the war was
over, they went back to work,” said Camille.
At the tail end of a long day, on the return flight
to Fort Wayne, each veteran receives envelopes
stuffed with cards and letters from family,
friends, schools, church groups and more. It’s
a pleasant surprise from a grateful community
and nation and a perfect way to finish the day.
The next Honor Flight will be Oct. 1. Here’s
how to get involved:
•Send letters or cards to be used for Mail Call
(P.O. Box 5, Huntertown, IN 46748)
•Welcome veterans back to Fort Wayne. Watch
the NFNEI Facebook page for the time.
•Donations are always welcome. Visit the website at NFNEI.org for additional information.

Senior Circle Members Lend Advice
—Theresa Shull, RN, CEN, Dupont Hospital
Dupont Hospital’s NICHE (Nurses Improving Care
for Healthsystem Elders) designation reflects the
hospital’s commitment to elder care excellence.
One of our priorities in caring for our senior
population is to get their input about how we
deliver care. To accomplish this, we developed
a senior advisory panel in partnership with
Senior Circle.
Panel members recently toured the hospital and
were asked to provide candid input about the
facility, specifically the functionality of its design.
We asked questions like, “Is the parking and/or valet
service satisfactory for guests using a walker?,”
“Are restroom directional signs clearly visible?”
and “Are wheelchairs available if you would need
one?” The group was also introduced to members
of the emergency department, radiology and outpatient services. After the tour, we enjoyed lunch
and a lively discussion.
Members provided us with some great ideas about
how to make our hospital environment more
senior-friendly. We plan to host the senior advisory
panel quarterly. Information from this panel and
other sources is reviewed by the multidisciplinary
Dupont Hospital Steering Committee, which
develops action plans for improvement.
At Dupont Hospital, we are always looking for
ways to improve your care and your experience.
If you have a suggestion, or even a compliment,
please share it with any Dupont team member
during your visit.

What is Kidney Smart?
—Rachel Gabet, RN, Kidney Smart Educator
Kidney Smart is a chronic kidney disease
education program available at no cost to
individuals who have diabetes, hypertension
or kidney disease. Through early identification
and education programs, like Kidney Smart,
we hope to delay the progression of this
disease. Kidney Smart educates people on
the importance of managing their risk factors,
such as diabetes and blood pressure, through
medication adherence and healthy eating
habits. We also equip those individuals who
have progressed to kidney failure with the
information they need to prepare for dialysis.
Kidney Smart is open to the public at no cost
and without a physician referral. Check out
KidneySmart.org for classes near you.

Creating an account is simple. All you need is
an email address. If you don’t have an email
address, there are many free, web-based email
providers.

your next appointment with a participating
Lutheran Health Physicians’ provider. Then,
visit your portal to:
•request appointments and prescription refills

Hospital Patients
Patients admitted to a Lutheran Health Network
hospital can set up a free hospital account
during their stay. Details about that stay will
be available online 14 hours after discharge.

*Healthcare providers will need to confirm whether
or not specific results will be available online. Results
will typically be available four days after lab testing is
performed.
Lutheran Health Network includes hospitals that are directly or indirectly owned by partnerships
that proudly include physician owners, including certain members of the hospitals’ medical staffs.
