Today is World Mission Sunday! We are invited to reach out and help
build the Church in Mongolia, the world’s youngest Catholic Church,
as well as local churches throughout the Missions in the most remote areas across our world. Your prayers and generous gift to the
Society for the Propagation of the Faith help the work of priests,
religious, and lay leaders in Mongolia and throughout the Missions
who offer the poor practical help and the experience of God’s love
and mercy, His hope and peace. Please keep the Missions in your
prayers. Please be as generous as you can in today’s collection.
Join Us for Next Wisdom Senior Lunch
Join us for the next Wisdom Senior Lunch on Tuesday, Oct. 28. Mass
will be said at 11:30 a.m., followed by pot luck lunch. Fr. Nick will be
joining us! Everyone age 50 and better is welcome.
Reminder: Due to very low attendance, we will no longer have an
8:30 a.m. Saturday morning communion service. There is an 8:30
a.m. Saturday Mass at Christ the King.
Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Question of the Week
Question for Children: Who has helped you know Jesus as a friend?
Question for Youth: What in your life is dedicated to God? How do
you keep those things sacred?
Question for Adults: If you were to write a thank-you note to someone who has helped you grow in faith, to whom would you write
and what would you say?
Generous Hearts Thought
Stewardship is what we do with what we have
when we believe in God. —Archbishop Tobin
Volunteer at Warehouse on Oct. 25
Our parish is part of a team that volunteers on a sixweek rotation to collect and distribute furniture, appliances, clothing, and household items for needy families at the St. Vincent de Paul Distribution Center. Please join us at 1201 E. Maryland on Saturday, Oct. 25, beginning at 7:55 a.m. and work if you can until early afternoon.
Troop Celebrates Court of Honor
Saint Matthew Troop 443 celebrated its
Fall Court of Honor ceremony on
Wednesday, Oct. 8, at the home of Jeff
and Judy Good. Approximately 60 family
members, including 24 Boy Scouts,
were present for the event. A total of
95 merit badges were awarded, and 13 scouts received rank advancements. Special recognition went to Tim Good who received
the Bronze Palm, which is awarded to scouts who have earned at
least five merit badges beyond those required for Eagle Scout.
Scoutmaster Brian Murphy was given special recognition and
thanks for his leadership and service to the troop as he completes
his fifth year of service as scoutmaster. Congratulations to all!

A Word from Our Pastor
World Mission Sunday: Today, as Catholics throughout the
world, we celebrate World Mission Sunday. We encourage all to
be generous with the mission work of the Church. Please keep
all missionaries and the missions of the Church in your prayers.
May the Lord continually bless with success the mission work of
the Church.
Back from Retreat: I returned from my retreat at the Jesuit Spiritual Center in Milford, OH, Friday afternoon, Oct. 10, just in
time to officiate at the wedding of my cousin last Saturday.
Many have been asking “how did my retreat go,” and I thank all
for asking. It was a wonderful, prayerful retreat. I had a great
spiritual director, plus the natural setting of the retreat center is
just a beautiful place to be, especially in the autumn. So, I did a
lot of walking (when it wasn’t raining), which always helps me
to be more attuned to hearing the voice of God in my life and
where the Lord might be directing me. Many thanks for all your
prayers while I was on retreat. I kept all at Saint Matthew Parish
in my prayers while on retreat.
United Catholic Appeal—Christ Our Hope: Stewardship is all
about proclaiming Christ to be our hope. We do this by extending Jesus’ compassion to others by the ministry we perform in
His name as individuals, as groups, as parishes, and as an Archdiocesan Church. The First Letter of Peter tells us: “Like good
stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with
whatever gift each of you has received” (I Peter 4:10). As people
of faith we know that everything we have is given to us by God.
Jesus is the model of Christian stewardship. He used all his gifts,
including his very life, to serve God and others. As those who
strive to imitate Jesus’ example of stewardship, we serve God
out of love and gratitude for the gifts we have been blessed
with, using our gifts for the spread of the gospel and the good
of the Church. We know that it’s not how much we have, but
what we do with what we have that is important. Please pray
for the success of the United Catholic Appeal throughout our
Archdiocese. My prayer is that over the course of this appeal we
grow deeper in our appreciation of just what it means to be a
Christian Steward. Jesus presented the ultimate gift to God: his
very life. Jesus calls us to walk in his footsteps by
• receiving God’s gifts gratefully
Respect Life Rosaries for October
October Is Respect Life Awareness Month. During October, there
will be recitation of the rosary in the chapel following 9 a.m. Sunday Mass. Please join members of the Saint Matthew Pro-Life Ministry as they pray for the most vulnerable in our society: the elderly, the sick, those on death row, and the unborn.
• Oct. 19 - Rosary for the Unborn
• Oct. 26 - Rosary for Those on Death Row
Respect for Life Prayer Cards are located in the back of church on
the welcome table. Feel free to take them with you.
• cultivating the gifts responsibly
• sharing our gifts lovingly in justice with others
• returning them with increase to the Lord.
Intention Weekend for our annual United Catholic Appeal at
Saint Matthew Parish is Nov. 1-2. Please respond generously to
our needs as an Archdiocesan Church.
May God bless all with a beautiful autumn week, Fr. Nick
