1 Vol. XIX. No. 4 July - August 2011 Published by the Friends of the Poway Library www.powayfriends.org Friends News FOPL Board Elections in May resulted in only one major change in our officers: Scott Kopperud is our new President, supported by Wendy Rios as Vice president. Sharron Watson remains FOPL Volunteer Coordinator, Dorothy Courtney as Treasurer, Joye Davisson as Membership Chair and FOPL Secretary, Jeanne Rogers as Editor. Friends Bookstore Manager John Williams is almost recovered from knee surgery earlier this summer. He has been sorely missed, as the rest of us scrambled to pinch-hit the myriad things John does to keep our fine Bookstore humming along. The Friends donation jar, which lives on the checkout counter in the Library was robbed on Friday, July 22 of $20 - $30. Someone took off the lid of the jar, removed the money and replaced the lid. It is a sad thing to Friends of the Poway Library Bark in the Park on a “Dog Day Celebration” May 14 - The Friends and Man’s Best Friends were a natural combination in Community Park amongst the pet and food venders, canine contests and demonstrations. Curling up with a good book and a congenial ball of fur is one of life’s sublime pleasures. Right - Laura Kopperud & Sharron Watson tend the FOPL booth in the park. Below - interested canine customers. 2 Friends News, cont’d. realize that a person who uses the Library and takes advantage of the services offered there took advantage of patrons who appreciate the Library and the Friends enough to contribute to us all, by stealing those contributions. We would appreciate the stolen money to be returned. In future, our donation jar will be secured to prevent a repetition of such a scurrilous theft. San Diego County Library launched a new donation campaign in July to provide customers with a simple, concrete way to help the library and fellow readers. This yearlong campaign, SDCL’s Most Wanted, involves asking customers to donate a new copy of the Book of the Month, or one of SDCL’s Top Ten Most Wanted books, titles which are chosen based upon the number of reserves, copies in the library system, and circulation. SDCLs Most Wanted Donation Day takes place the second Thursday of each month. As part of this campaign, customers can also donate money to be matched dollar for dollar up to $200,000. Books that are donated on any other day will not be part of this campaign. President’s Parting Words It’s been my pleasure to serve as your president these past four years. I think of the library as my second home, and love being here with all the wonderful volunteers and friends I have met through the Bookstore and our library events. I’ve been asked on more than one occasion if I am paid to work at the library & bookstore and I reply that I love it so much I would pay to work here! I am looking forward to my two-year term as your Vice President; I envision my role as one of assisting and advising our new FOPL President and dear friend, Scott Kopperud, whenever he needs a hand. Scott was Vice President of the Friends for the past two years and brought many fresh ideas to our board meetings. He’s a wonderful guy, and when we got Scott as a volunteer, we also got his wife, Laura, who works in a library, and his daughter, Gail, who is a regular volunteer in the bookstore and helps with the processing of donations. Those of you who know me know that I am always looking for a bargain, and we really got one with the Kopperud family; three for the price of one! I have been appointed to the advisory committee of the Library Foundation of San Diego County Friends of the Poway Library Board Members 2011 President: Vice-President: Volunteer Coordinator: Treasurer: Membership Chair, Secretary: Open Book Editor: Scott Kopperud Wendy Rios Sharron Watson Dorothy Courtney phone: 382-1925, email: [email protected] phone: 335-8016, email: [email protected] phone: 486-7033, email: [email protected] phone: 748-9588, email: [email protected] Joye Davisson Jeanne Rogers phone: 748-7441, email: [email protected] phone: 679-1115, email: [email protected] 3 President’s Parting Words, cont’d. (LFSDC), and have been helping create an Endowment that will help all of the libraries in the county system. I’m also interested in learning about grant writing for our library’s needs. I’m hoping to have a bit more time for pursuing other interests such as knitting, reading (a book a day keeps the doctor away), playing Scrabble, and relearning how to play guitar. Of course, my heart belongs to the Poway Community Library, and I will always be around; working in the bookstore, cleaning books in the back room, and scrubbing graffiti off the trash barrels in the courtyard (I was instrumental in getting the city to give us six barrels instead of our previous one barrel). I’ll be helping out at the book sales and all of the Friends’ events, and helping get the best deals for the best prices on everything the library and its staff need. It’s a pleasure and an honor to have served, and I thank all of you for making our library one of the finest in the county system. Whether it’s through donations of books, money or your time, you are all part of the team that makes our library so great! Wendy Rios, FOPL Vice President MembershipNote The Friends of the Poway Library membership year ends August 31, 2011. Mid-August members will receive membership renewal notices. Wait for your letter and send your dues with the enclosed form. Lifetime members, Founding members and members who have paid in advance will not receive notices. Our sincere thanks to all who support the Friends of the Poway Library. It means so much to the Board and to the library staff. Joye Davisson, Membership chair Fond Farewell to a Friend, a Friend’s Fond Farewell Early this summer, longtime Friend and Bookstore volunteer Elizabeth Sampley returned to her native Texas after three years in Poway, supporting her daughter and grandkids while her Marine son-in-law was deployed overseas. Her farewell message reminds me that we’ll miss her as much as she will miss the Friends: It is with deepest regret that I have to resign my place with such a wonderful organization and such an awesome group of volunteers, but I am moving home to Texas and hope to get to know my other six grandchildren... Your (our) organization allowed me to get to know Poway and its community even better than I would have been able to do on my own. Poway reminded me of our close communities in Texas why I loved it so. I will truly miss my volunteer job, the Bookstore, the Library, the community and the Friends volunteers. Thank you for the life-lasting experience, Elizabeth Sampley 4 At the Poway Library The Summer Reading Clubs are winding down after a smashingly successful summer. The Poway Library had more kids and teens signed up than any other SDCL branch. It was exciting, with prizes galore and a grand prize drawing in midAugust. The Children’s program will finish on August 6 with a Polynesian Revue, and teens on August 27 with the Battle of the Bands. Above, Hogwarts students gather for the last (?) Harry Potter Party at the Library. Left, Potions Class, making Hippie Swirls. 5 Harry Potter Birthday Party "You are here: Hogwarts." We had our last ever Poway Teen Harry Potter Birthday Party* on July 26, a bit early this year because I wanted to have it before the final movie was released. We had a crazy amount of food, in different stations that each teen could visit: Honeydukes where they could try chocolate frogs, butterbeer, pumpkin juice, candy cobwebs, and some Harry Potter Birthday cake; Potions class where they could make a liquid potion (Hippy Swirls) and a fairy dust potion (sand candy); the Cupboard Under the Stairs where they could make a "Harry Potter Acceptance Letter" beaded bookmark; and Ollivander's where they could make a wand. We all had a blast.
