Principal Report
Strategic Planning
The Department of Education and Communities is advocating a new approach to school planning to improve
the quality of teaching in schools and to improve outcomes for all students as well as incorporating a
number of recent reforms.
As a response to this, we are currently organising a consultation process for students, staff and parents for
the Manly West Strategic Plan for 2015-2017. We are using the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals
for Young Australians and the Greater Teacher Inspired Learning reform as part of the foundations of this
process.
The teachers have already had some discussions on what is currently happening in the school and teachers
and students will be involved in regular workshops about the current and future plans. Parents will also have
opportunities to be involved in some surveys and focus groups. I will continue to provide further information
on the consultation process during the term.
The Library Annexe Lab
Thank you to the P&C for the financial contribution to assist the organisation of our new Library Annexe
Laboratory. Years 3, 4 and 5 will start their timetables to use the laptops this week. Thank you to Miss
Simat, Mr Richards and Mrs Bruce for all the planning and organisation of the room and technology. This is
a very exciting initiative and gives further access to technology in a stimulating environment to enhance
learning.
World Teachers Day/Post Production Thank You.
The staff was treated to a barbecue last week organised by Mrs Mwanga and Mr Perks to thank them for the
wonderful Drama Production last term. We also used the occasion to acknowledge and show appreciation for
our teachers at Manly West as part of the World Teachers Day celebrations which occurs on 31 October in
Australia.
Grandparents Day
Next Sunday 26 October is Grandparents Day. It is a great opportunity to acknowledge the amazing role
that Grandparents play especially in the very fast world that we currently live. Grandparents can act as
wonderful role models with enormous knowledge and sense of history for our children and definitely give
incredible support to families with busy lifestyles. We especially thank all our Manly West grandparents for
their outstanding contributions to our school community.

Advanced Life Family Photo day is Thursday 6 November. Parents need to complete the Family Photo
Envelope and return to their child's teacher by Monday 3 November. As our school photo day has passed
the online payment option has closed.
Thank you to Year 6 students - Daniel Kirk, Asher Jaggers, Aiden Helu, Liam Barnard, Jayde
Sands, Sailor Perrett, Olivia Keayes and Rhiannon Leatham for being wonderful school
ambassadors by acting responsibly and assisting students and teachers with school photographs.

Skiing
At the tail end of Term 3, after a long winter campaign, the Manly West Div 5 Girls team raced
in the Interschools SkierX National Championship.
Fielding one of the youngest teams at each round in this event it was a great accomplishment
to get to the final round.
The race was very challenging with impressive performances from strong teams local to the
mountains on the NSW and Victorian side. The Manly West team of Millie Rundle, Julia Murphy
and Clara Wall came 13th overall giving them valuable experience and putting them in a great
position for the future years they have in this Division.
Caleb Atkinson represented Manly West in Division 5 of the Interschools National Championship
in Cross Country Skiing on Wednesday 10th September. Caleb placed 15th in the XC Freestyle
event and is looking forward to another year competing in division 5.
All of the competitors representing Manly West this year will be eligible to compete in the same
division next year so there's good reason to expect even better results. It will all start again
with information and training sessions from the beginning of Term 2 2015 - watch this space!
