Welcome To Miss Gay Iowa USofA 2015
Dear Contestant,
Welcome to the 26th Annual Miss Gay Iowa USofA Pageant! We are so thrilled
that you have made the decision to compete in our pageant. Miss Gay Iowa
USofA has consistently been a symbol of excellence in Iowa since 1989 and we
are so happy to have you as a part of the tradition and this year we are beginning
a new tradition, by adding the Miss Gay Iowa USofA Classic Pageant!
This year we are so excited to have the reigning Miss Gay USofA, Jenna Skyy
and the reigning Miss Gay USofA Classic, Chevelle Brooks! Also, we have Miss
Gay USofA at Large 1989, Carmella Marcella Garcia as our Official Emcee for
the entire weekend. We will have a long list of Former Miss Gay Iowa USofA’s
and will be honoring the reigning Miss Gay Iowa USofA, Kata Klysmic all
weekend. The winner this year has big shoes to fill! This is going to be a VERY
EXCITING weekend of pageantry and entertainment!
Miss Gay Iowa USofA is a state preliminary pageant designed to send TWO
representatives (winner and first alternate) to compete for the title of Miss Gay
USofA in Dallas, TX. This handbook has been designed and paralleled to the
rules and regulations of the Miss Gay USofA national contest. Please read the
enclosed information very carefully and bring it with you to reference during the
state competition.
If you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me or any
pageant staff member.
I want to personally thank you for contributing your time and talent to one of the
largest preliminaries in the nation!
Sincerely,

PERSONAL INTERVIEW COMPETITION –
Each contestant will be interviewed individually by the judges panel. The purpose of
personal interview in the USofA System is to provide the judges some insight into the
character of each contestant. In the interview the judges are allowed the opportunity to
evaluate each contestant’s basic qualities – such as – intelligence, ability to
communicate, attitude, composure, etc. The judges may also gather information about
the contestant’s professional or personal life.
The basic nature of the interview is intended to be casual and relaxed. Each contestant
should select clothing in which he feels at ease. You should dress as you would for a
job interview. Interviews for Miss Gay Iowa USofA will be held at The Garden Nightclub.
EVENING GOWN COMPETITION –
Evening gowns may be of any color or style. They must, however, be full length. The
gown must fit well, the contestant must model it elegantly, and all of the elements (hair,
make-up, accessories, shoes, and gown) must come together for an overall look that
makes the contestant look her very best.
The Miss Gay USofA Fashion competition has traditionally rewarded contestants who
bring a unique combination of evening gown, hair, make-up, accessories, modeling, and
poise to the stage. That has not changed . The USofA System has often rewarded
gowns that include lots of rhinestones, beading, etc., as well as hair and accessories
that may be described as " high drag ". These are still appropriate for Fashion
Competition in the Miss Gay USofA (at Large, Classic, & Newcomer) Pageants. While
couture gowns are also appropriate for the USofA Fashion category, this is not creative
evening wear competition, and gowns that are costumes should be avoided.
We also discourage gowns that are so heavily embellished that the contestant cannot
model them elegantly. Also, judges are asked to educate themselves about current
fashion, and contestants should be aware that a gown, though beautiful, may be
outdated and therefore not score as well as it might otherwise.
Further, a gown with few or even no embellishments (stones, etc.) can score just as well
as a fully embellished gown if the overall look (make-up, hair, accessories, shoes,
poise, fit, modeling) make the contestant look her very best.

TALENT COMPETITION –
Any type of talent presentation will be allowed as long as it does not cause danger or
injury to any contestant, dancer(s) or any audience member. You may not use fire,
glitter, water or liquid of any kind in any talent presentation. You may not use any live
animals in any talent presentation.
We have allowed a limited time for each contestant’s talent presentation rehearsal. This
will allow time for sound checks, blocking and lighting cues. Please make sure you are
prepared for your talent rehearsal as time is limited. Back up dancers will be assigned a
separate dressing area. Make sure you tell the contestant coordinator at the contestant
registration the exact number of dancers and prop personnel you will have. You must
remove your props at the end of that nights competition. ALL props must be removed or
they may be discarded!
All preliminary competition will be held on the main stage and dance floor of The
Garden. Final Night will be held at Wooly’s. Please use your rehearsal time to block
out the stage area. Because of limited space at both venues, Iowa USofA Pageantry is
urging all contestants to minimize the number of large props used. All props must be
free standing and must be able to enter through a standard sized doorway. Remember
that Iowa USofA Pageantry does not provide contestants with backstage staff for prop
set-up and tear down, although we will assist with your props as much as possible. The
backstage staff will not, under any circumstance, be responsible for any damage to
props while helping a contestant. Props may only be stored at The Garden Nightclub or
Wooly’s on the day of competition. Each contestant must secure his own storage of
props at all times.
