Important to know about sampling shaft
To ensure the best possible operation of the sampling shaft, read carefully through these
instructions of operation, installation and maintenance. During the installation, pay special
attention on the details mentioned below to guarantee safe working conditions and
separator function.
Handle the sampling shaft with care. Do not drag, roll or drop it.
Fasten the shaft carefully for the transportation to avoid any damage.
Inspect the shaft immediately after the transport to the installation site for any
damage that might have occurred during the transport.
Anchor the shaft to prevent it from floating; this is the buoyancy-effect caused by the
groundwater or the rainwater that pours into the excavation.
For filling the installation pit it is recommended to use sieved gravel of grain size 3-16
mm.
During filling of the mounting pit it is forbidden to drive with excavator closer to shaft
than 1.5 m measured from the edges and ends of the tank.
Fill separators with water immediately after installation and emptying.
To ensure reliable and proper functioning of the separator, certain inspection and
maintenance operations must be carried out. Regular maintenance plays a key role in
the best possible purifying efficiency.
Mark the location of the sampling shaft e.g. to property’s maintenance manual (e.g.
map or the description of the location).
Entering to the shaft is allowed only if all the local safety regulations are obeyed (e.g.
measuring oxygen content, using of safety equipment etc.).
Smoking and open fire are strictly forbidden.
To avoid accidents, the shaft lid must always be closed! It is always the property
owner who is responsible for preventing anything from falling into the shaft (children,
animals, etc.)!

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MOUNTING IN THE GROUND
Installation of the PE-model
These instructions are suitable for EuroNOK PE DN110…DN400 and EuroNOK PE FRW
DN200/160…DN315/315 sampling shafts.
1)
Compact a horizontally leveled, 30 cm thick layer of sieved gravel to the bottom of the pit.
For filling the pit it is recommended to use sieved gravel of grain size 3-16 mm.
2a) Sampling shaft anchors to the ground by itself if it is installed right and the ground allows
water to infiltrate easily. In this case separate anchoring is not needed. If soil type does not
allow anchoring by itself, the shaft should be anchored to prevent the buoyant force of
water from moving the shaft. If separate anchoring isn’t performed, lift the shaft on to top of
the sieved gravel layer and pour about 30 cm layer of water to the shaft to stabilize it.
2b) Anchoring slab:
An anchoring slab should be cast, if
the ground water level in the area is higher than the bottom of the shaft
the water infiltration to the ground is weak and the rain water may gather into the
mounting pit
the bearing capacity of the ground is weak
If needed, cast reinforced anchoring slab on the sieved gravel layer and 4 pcs min. Ø10
mm stainless steel lugs to slab to anchor the shaft. Determine the positions of the stainless
steel lugs before casting the concrete slab.
Lift the shaft on the concrete slab and pour about 30 cm layer of water to the shaft to
stabilize it.
Install the sampling shaft to a vertical position. Use 2 pcs non-stretching polyester belts
(width 25 mm, weight capacity 2000 kg) for anchoring the sampling shaft.
Slip belts behind lifting eye bolts around the collar of the sampling shaft in a way that both
belts go around half a round. Fasten the heads of both belts to the lugs of the slab (see
Figure 7).

necessary).
3)
Install inlet and outlet sewers to the sampling shaft.
Install a rubber gasket onto the bottom edge of the maintenance shaft. Set the EuroHUK
maintenance shaft in a vertical position into the installation frame. Lock the retaining
latches (see Figure 8). Install the ventilation pipe onto the ventilation outlet of the
maintenance shaft (if needed).
Fill the shaft with water to the level of the outlet sewer. Continue filling and compacting the
pit in 30 cm layers. Avoid using heavy machinery when compacting layers on top of the
shaft and on inlet and outlet sewers. Continue filling the pit until the ground level is
reached.
Figure 8. Locking EuroHUK maintenance shaft.
4)
After filling the pit, cut the maintenance shaft to right height. Note that the cover and frame
will give about 100 - 150 mm extra height to the maintenance shaft. After cutting the
maintenance shaft to right height, install the frame of the cover and frame assembly on the
maintenance shaft. The frame must lean on the surrounding compacted layers of sieved

gravel or a load compensation plate and the asphalt layer instead of leaning against the
maintenance shaft.
In an area of heavy and medium weight traffic, a load compensation plate and a layer of
asphalt must be laid to equalize the wheel loads (see Figure 9).

Installation of the GRP-model
These instructions are suitable for EuroNOK DN400…DN500 and EuroNOK FRW
DN400/315…DN500/500 sampling shafts.
1)
Compact a horizontally leveled, 30 cm sieved gravel layer to the bottom of the pit. For
filling the pit it is recommended to use sieved gravel of grain size 3-16 mm.
The shaft should be anchored to prevent the buoyant force of water from moving the shaft.
Recommended choice for anchor is square shaped reinforced concrete slab.
An anchoring slab should be cast, if
the ground water level in the area is higher than the bottom of the shaft
the water infiltration to the ground is weak and the rain water may gather into the
mounting pit
the bearing capacity of the ground is weak
Size of each side of the concrete slab must be shaft diameter + 1000 mm and thickness
must be at least 150 mm. Anchoring is done using special fasteners, threaded studs and
KEMLA 10 hammer-in capsules.
2)
Cast horizontal reinforced anchoring slab or place already casted concrete slab on the
sieved gravel layer. Use e.g. concrete K30-2 and A500HW T8 #200 reinforcement for
casting the slab. The anchoring slab must be square shaped. Remove the transportation
subsidy and place the shaft to the middle of the anchoring slab (Figure 10). Pour 30 cm
layer of clean water to the shaft to stabilize it.

Mark fasteners’ places to the concrete slab. Drill 100 mm deep Ø12 mm hole to the dry
slab for each fastener (Figure 10 and Figure 11). Holes drilled with diamond drill must be
coarsened. Keep the mounting pit dry until the anchoring is ready.
Figure 11. Attaching anchoring parts to the concrete slab.
Brush, vacuum or blow the holes clean with care. Install hammer-in capsules KEMLA 10 to
the holes. Hammer threaded bar to bottom of the hole and twist it a couple of times. This
way hammer-in capsule’s mass spreads to whole anchoring area. Hammer-in capsules’
mass hardening and loading time depends on temperature.

Frost insulation
Sampling shaft must be installed in a way it won’t freeze.
The required frost insulation depends on the installation depth of the sewers and local
circumstances. However, it is recommended to always construct frost protection in area
where frost may exist. Frost insulation should be done with insulation plates. Dimensioning
of the plate’s thickness and width is case-specific.

MAINTENANCE
Special attention should be given to the maintenance of the sampling shaft to ensure its
effective operation throughout the life span of the system. The need for maintenance
depends on the location and purpose of the system. If the separator system is used to
process waste waters produced at vehicle washing sites or for other purposes where the
separator system is exposed to a degree of solid matter load, its operation should be
monitored and maintenance procedures performed more often than e.g. in systems which
process rain waters gathered from asphalted areas.
It is recommended to keep a service log of all draining and maintenance operations. All
maintenance operations and error situations concerning the sampling shaft should be
entered in this log. An example of service log is demonstrated in chapter 5.
4.1
Check-up maintenance
The possible solids gathered on the bottom of the shaft must be cleaned. The sampling
shaft should be emptied thoroughly at least once in six months and the dirt on the walls
must be cleaned with water. At the same time it is recommended to oil the moving parts of
valve with waterproof vaseline. Check the operation of the valve by closing/opening it.
4.2
Construction maintenance
Empty the sampling shaft for inspection at least every five years. Clean the inside
constructions with e.g. tap water using a high pressure washer. Drain the cleaning water
completely from the sampling shaft with the suction hose of the container truck before
checking the shaft.
Check the tightness of the sampling shaft, condition of the body, inner surfaces of the shaft
and condition of inner structures.
