October 31st Halloween Kicks Off Holiday Season
With the upcoming two-month holiday season starting on Friday, October 31st, with Halloween, we wish to remind everyone to always have safe and enjoyable times. Veteran’s Day, November 11th falls on Tuesday, and is a recognized day of
remembrance for our veterans; Thanksgiving Day, on Thursday, November 27th, starts a long four-day weekend for most
folks; December 25th, Christmas Day falls on a Thursday and may well be a four-day holiday weekend too. January 1st,
New Year’s day, also falls on a Thursday, but may not necessarily mean a four- day break for most. But, we hope it is as
that one day back to the office on January 2nd will not be very popular or productive. As for VCCA we have enjoyed year
long successful activities for our construction industry members: superb member-mixers and quarterly dinners, a super
July golf tourney and a well-attended annual BBQ. We will again kick off the new year in 2016 with our Annual Member
Dinner (also known as our Installation Dinner for 2016 directors and officers) on Tuesday, January 27th at the Wedgewood
in Ventura. Mark it down! As well as our upcoming member-mixer on Oct 24th, and call the VCCA office to let them know.
2015-2017 Board of Director Nominations
The VCCA board of directors consists of 15 members: 7 general contractors, 6 specialty contractors and 2 associates. Long time VCCA director Nort Colborn, representing Standard Industries, will not be seeking re-election to the
board of directors in Specialty Contractor category. As such we know we will have at least one new member on the VCCA
board of directors serving for the 2015 and 2017 calendar year. If you believe you are qualified, or know someone who is,
please contact a member of the Nominating Committee shown on the following page or contact a VCCA staff member

Remember the Ventura Bowling Center? It’s been reinvented! Last year Ventura City
Council unanimously approved Discovery’s patio license formally allowing Discovery’s
facade, patio design, and ADA property improvements. Paramount to Discovery’s ability
to move forward with the costs of the facade and ADA improvements was the City of
Ventura’s Business Loan Assistance Program (BLAP) administered by EDC-VC.
Discovery features 9 bowling lanes, billiards, shuffleboard, comfortable lounge seating,
giant projection screens showing the important games and the best surf videos. The
venues offers a brand new horse-shoe bar with reclaimed wood bar tops from salvaged
lanes, a locally-sourced menu, local & regional micro-brews, a private VIP room, VIP
lanes, local artwork, and 160 capacity banquet room.
“The interior renovation is going to blow people away! Wait until you see what’s been hiding for over 57 years! It’s incredible, and we are so excited to be restoring such a dilapidated building that just a few years ago was destined to be knocked
down. Instead, we’ll be taking the World War II architectural treasure-of-a-building back into the future for as long as we
can be sustainable,” according to Jeremy Pemberton CEO of Discovery. Join us for a fun time.

2015 Board of Director Elections
Each year during the month of December, ballots are mailed to all VCCA members in good standing
to vote for candidates to serve as a VCCA Director for a two year term. The Board consists of 15
members: seven (7) general contractors, six (6) specialty contractors and two associates. To serve
for the calendar years 2015 and 2017, seven positions are to be filled: fthree general contractors,
three specialty contractors and one associate. Per the Association by-laws there is no limit to number
of terms a director may serve.
There is only one vote allowed for each member. That vote is cast by the representative who has
been selected by the dues paying member to represent that member. This may change from time to
time as personnel may change on behalf of the named member. The named representative is
deemed the spokesman for the member, be it a corporation, sole proprietorship or an individual.
A nominating committee has been appointed to screen and qualify members who may be interested in
serving as a Director. Names may be submitted to the committee through a staff member of VCCA,
made from the floor at membership meetings, directly from the committee, or by ballot write-in. Once
candidates are selected, ballots are sent out to all the named voting contacts of all current dues paying members of the Association.
The ballots are to be returned postmarked no later than January 5, 2015. The nominating committee
then becomes the election committee. They shall tabulate the votes and successful candidates with
the highest number of votes for the positions available within each category shall prevail. The Board of
Directors will elect VCCA Officers for the year 2015 at its first Board meeting in January 2015. The
successful board candidates will be installed at the Annual Installation Dinner on January 27, 2015

Thanks to voter approval of Measure “R” in November 2012, the District
has embarked on a program to continue to transform Oxnard schools.
Measure “R” authorized the Oxnard School District to issue $90 million
in General Obligation bonds for various modernization and grade
reconfiguration projects.
The bond program was established to build new classrooms, relieve
student overcrowding at every school, and modernize school facilities to
meet current building standards. The projects under the bond program
are now underway.

VCCA is a private, non-profit membership organization serving the construction industry in Ventura
County for over sixty years. We were formed in August of l946.
Membership is open to qualified state licensed contractors and other businesses, individuals and
entities who are not contractors but whose activities involve the construction industry, such as suppliers,
material men, vehicle and equipment dealers, banking, insurance, legal and accounting professionals. At least
75% of our members must be licensed contractors, with not more than 25% of the being Associates.
Annual dues are $395.00...about the price of a cup of coffee a day! Membership pays off! VCCA is….
