Poem From Year 6
At the beach you can
Plunge into the icy depths of the ocean
Walk, and let the sand tickle your feet
Swim, and let the waves crash over you
Feel the sun’s rays shining their heat on you
Listen to the waves rising and crashing
Paddle and splash each other till you’re soaking wet
Make a sand sculpture and let your imagination run free
Collect shells until your legs give up
Smell the fish and chips until you can’t resist anymore
Touch the sand and let the texture pull you into a slumber
Think of thoughts until you have none left to give
Ride the rollercoaster of a wave without a second thought

Grounds News
Congratulations to the fabulous Grounds Committee and your volunteers for all the mulching,
weeding, pruning, digging and tidying of the garden beds on Sunday. I was taking a tour group of
Principals from Western Australia, The Northern Territory and South Australia around the school on
Monday morning and they commented on how terrific our gardens looked – great job everyone.
WORLD TEACHERS' DAY - History
World Teachers' Day was inaugurated by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural
Organisation, UNESCO, in 1994. This date commemorates the adoption in 1966 of UNESCO's
recommendations concerning the status of teachers. UNESCO WORLD TEACHERS' DAY - 26th
General Conference Recommendation 1966. The UNESCO World Teachers' Day acknowledges
teachers' contribution to education and development. In our increasingly complex and rapidly
changing societies, teachers' tasks are more demanding and challenging than ever before. World
Teachers' Day represents a significant symbol of the awareness, understanding and appreciation
displayed for the vital contribution that teachers make to education and development.
Celebrations in Australia
Due to World Teachers' Day occurring during school holidays (5 October) in most states and
territories, it has been decided that the Australian celebrations will always be held on the last
Friday in the month of October. It provides schools with an excellent opportunity for acknowledging
their teachers' contribution to education and recognising the dedication and commitment that
teachers provide for today's youth both in and out of the classroom. Recognition of this World
Teachers' Day in Australia is increasingly growing with all states and territories participating in
celebrations either formally or informally.
Safety Around The School
A reminder to parents/carers about safety around the school, including walking on the pedestrian
crossing, parking carefully, driving carefully and no u-turns on the street in front of the school.
We are concerned about the safety of all our students. Thank you in advance of your support.
Foyer Display
Did you have a look at the fabulous artwork from 5D? Their work was an interpretation of
Friedensreich Hundertwasser’s ‘Trees.’ Hundertwasser loved nature. He loved painting with bright
colours, spiral shapes and curvy line. Come on down this week and see the recreations from 5L of
The Great Wave by Katsushika Hokusai. 5L have been looking at the above iconic piece of
Japanese artwork and were fascinated to discover that it is not a painting but a woodblock print.
Great work 5L.

Please ensure all items taken to the pool are clearly labelled.
Road Safety
All parents/carers are requested to take extra care to ensure the safety of all our students while driving around the school. This is especially important during morning and afternoon student drop off
and pick up times. Parents/carers are requested to supervise their children carefully around the bus
stop, at the Keary Street exit, as there is often additional traffic in this area with Willoughby Girls
High students. Please help our teachers by reinforcing the importance of using the school crossings
and not walking through the staff car park.

6:30pm sharp in the school hall
Would your child like to join the WPS Training Band in 2015? Come along and find out more…
The WPS band program is run by a happy, dedicated group of parents, with significant support
from the school. The program gives children in Year 3 and up the opportunity to discover music
and learn a musical instrument in a fun, group setting.

Public School, but older children are welcome.
The Information Night will start at 6:30pm sharp and finish around 7:15pm. Parents will hear our

WILLOUGHBY PUBLIC SCHOOL P& C GROUNDS COMMITTEE
Working Bee - Sunday 19 October 2014
Thank you to all the fabulous WPS families who came to help at the
working bee on Sunday. A special mention and thank you to Mrs Garrard
and her four children (none of which attend Willoughby) for coming to
help as well as families from KG and KI who had the greatest turn out of
all the classes.
We were fortunate to have some gardening experts in the form of school
grandparents – Liz Olsen from Wellington, New Zealand (Ritchie
children) and Judy McGuiness from Boorowa NSW (Ogg children). Their
efforts in the rose garden were much appreciated.
It was a beautiful day for a bit of gardening or scootering around the school. Here's what we
achieved:
●
mulch was spread throughout the Kindy-Year 1 playground and through other tree beds
through out the school
●
weeding was done all over the school - in the Kindy-Year 1 area, in front of the library, the
rose garden and along the paths and under hedges
●
straw was placed in the garden bed in front of the library to try to supress the weeds
●
much of a dead tree was chopped down near the bicycle area
●
tomato and basil plants were planted next to the demountable beside the Kindy-Year 1 toilets
Many of the kids did a great job with delivering and spreading the mulch, picking up rubbish,
keeping the workers fed with cake and refreshed with cold water. All their efforts were rewarded
with the lolly hunt!
Thanks to Willoughby Council for providing the mulch and weed bags. Thank you to Harry Wilson
for helping with wheelbarrow repairs and assisting with the mulch delivery. Thank you to Jax Tyres
at Artarmon for changing our wheelbarrow tyres. Thank you to Fiona Crowther for coordinating the
kitchen. Thanks also to all the kids for "hiding" the lollies.
