Iran exports value passes $23bn
TEHRAN - Iran’s exports have earned USD 23.2 billion for the country in
the six months ending September 22, 2014, an Iranian official says.
Valiollah Afkhami-Rad, the deputy minister of industry, mine and trade, said
late Saturday that the figure shows a 19-percent increase compared with the
same period last year. Afkhami-Rad, who is the head of the Trade Promotion
Organization of Iran, said earlier this month that the country’s foreign trade has
witnessed a 22-percent growth during the first half of the current Iranian year
(March 21-September 22). “The volume of the country’s foreign trade grew 22
percent to over USD 53 billion during the first six months of the current year,”
he said. He expressed optimism that Iran’s foreign trade would reach USD 110
billion by March 2015.

Iran, Iraq sign trade cooperation protocol
TEHRAN - Iran and Iraq have signed a trade protocol for the promotion of
cooperation between the two countries, a senior trade official announced on Saturday. "This protocol has 15 paragraphs and it has been signed to facilitate trade
transactions between Iran and Iraq," Head of the Trade Promotion Organization
of Iran Valiollah Afkhamirad said. He pointed to the recent visit of Iraqi Trade
Minister Mohammed Abdul Karim to Iran and his meetings with senior Iranian
officials, and said, "The Iraqi minister discussed the problems facing Iranian
businessmen for exporting their goods to Iraq."
The TPO chief, meantime also said, "The Iranian and Qatari officials discussed facilitating expansion of trade exchanges between the two countries'
businessmen."

President Rohani:
Acid culprits to be dealt with 'harshly’
TEHRAN - Iranian President Hassan Rohani says his
administration is pursuing
the recent case of acid attacks
on women with all its might,
adding that the culprits will
be harshly dealt with.
The Iranian president said
in a cabinet session on Sunday that the three ministers,
tasked with following up the
case, had delivered their re-
port to the cabinet earlier in
the day, Press TV reported.
Rohani onThursday tasked
the ministries of the interior,
intelligence, and justice with
launching an investigation
into the sensitive case after
he was briefed about the attacks against young women
in Isfahan.
President Rohani also reassured the Iranian nation
that his administration would
leave no stone unturned in examining all aspects of the “inhumane” and “hideous” acts.
“The issue was an inhumane event, incompatible
with any principles, and is the
most heinous act that an evil
person can commit in the society,” the president added.
Rohani said the recent
events in the central city of
Isfahan were attempts to
harm the country’s “national
security and the administration will exert every effort for
the establishment of security
in the society.”
He added that his adminis-
tration would do whatever it
can to provide support for the
victims of the attacks.
“No clemency” will be
granted to the attacker or attackers and they will be given
the maximum penalty, he further noted.
The president also warned
against making “baseless accusations” against any particular person or group before
the real culprits are arrested.
Reports of a spate of acid
attacks against women in
Isfahan have triggered grave
concerns among the Iranian
public and led to widespread
speculations in the press and
social media.
On October 20, Iranian
Judiciary spokesman, Gholam-Hossein Mohseni Eje'i,
pledged serious and prompt
action against the attacks.
Inflation rate dropped by
1.5% last month
TEHRAN – Iran Statistical Center announced the inflation rate for the 12 months
ending to the month of Mehr (September/
October) at 19.1% showing a drop of 1.5%
as compared to the previous month, Shahrivar.
The main index in the month of Mehr
shows the figure 197.0 which increased
1.4% in comparison with a month ago. Increase in the main index in comparison with
the corresponding month last year (point to
point inflation) is 14.2% which has remained
stable compared to the month before, IRNA
reported.
The percentage of the main index (urban
inflation rate) in the 12 months ending to the
month of Mehr this year compared to the
same period last year is 19.1% which shows
a decrease as compared to the same figure
for the month of Shahrivar, 20.6%.
The index of the main group, foodstuffs,
beverages and tobacco, in the said month
reached 230.0 which showed an increase of
0.2% over the previous month.

ME states must up anti-terror bid
Iran, FAO underline enhancement of mutual cooperation
TEHRAN - Iranian Agricultural
Jihad Minister Mahmoud Hojjati and
Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United
Nations (FAO) to Tehran Serge Nakouzi discussed the new farming and
irrigation methods the country should
utilize to boost its agricultural products.
“Iran is facing water shortage
which certainly affects the country’s
agriculture sector. We need to cooperate with FAO to get access to the
latest achievements in this regard,”
the Iranian minister said at a meeting
here with Nakouzi on Saturday, FNA
reported.
Nakouzi, for his part, said FAO
is looking for a comprehensive
plan to expand cooperation and
eliminate drought and overcome
the problem of limited water resources in Iran.
FAO is a subsidiary of the United
Nations (UN) and its main objective
is to achieve food security for all to
make sure people have regular access
to enough high-quality food to lead
active, healthy lives.

Iran wrestlers win 11 medals
in Turkey
TEHRAN - Young Iranian freestyle and GrecoRoman wrestlers have
snatched eleven medals at
the 2014 Cumhuriyet Youth
Wrestling Tournament in
Turkey.
On Saturday, day two
of the competitions in the
Turkish city of Istanbul,
Iran’s freestyle athlete Mohammad Namjou-Motlaq
was downed by his Bulgarian opponent in the last
encounter of men’s 55-kilogram weight category and
collected the silver medal,
Press TV reported.
In the 74-kilogram
category, Amir Hossein
Lorestani won his final bout
against a representative
from Russia to take home
the gold medal.Also
Seyed Iman Hosseini
overpowered a Turkish
freestyle wrestler in his
last combat of 120-kilogram class, and clinched
the gold.
Iranian Greco-Roman
wrestlers Reza Khedri
and Pouya Abbasi also
emerged victorious in their
third-place play-offs of 55kilogram and 120-kilogram
weight sections, and were
awarded bronze medals.
On Friday, young Iranian
freestyle wrestlers collected three gold medals, and
Greco-Roman athletes won
three bronze medals.
The 2014 Cumhuriyet
Youth Wrestling Tournament started in the Turkish
city of Istanbul on October
24, and will run until October 26. Dozens of wrestlers
from various countries, including Bulgaria, Georgia,
Hungary, Iran, Russia and
Turkey, have taken part in
the tournament.
UN envoy calls for int'l focus
on Rohani proposal
TEHRAN – The UN resident coordinator in Iran Gary
Lewis called for international focus on the proposal of the
Iranian President Hassan Rohani concerning a world free
of violence.
He made the remarks
while talking to IRNA on
Sunday prior to the visit of
the UN Deputy Secretary
General Jan Eliasson to Iran
on October 26-30.
He said the proposed plan
offered by the Iranian President is in compliance with the
United Nations Charter.
He further expressed
hope that the world countries
would pay due attention to
the plan.
He noted that the proposed
plan which advocates a world
free of violence and extremism stresses the mandate of
the global organization that
entails spread of peace in the
world.
As to Iran's UN history, he
said Tehran became a member of the United Nations in
1945 when the organization
was first established.
He pointed out that the
international organization
has been operating in Iran
since then, adding that it
currently has 18 offices
working here in such areas
as education, poverty elimination, healthcare and environment.
Iran oil output to reach 4.3mn bpd
TEHRAN - A senior Iranian oil official
says the country plans to increase its crude
oil production to 4.3 million barrels per day
(bpd) soon, amid hopes for the removal of
anti-Iran sanctions.
“In the near future, Iran’s oil production
capacity will reach 4.3 million barrels,” Mansour Moazzami, the Iranian deputy oil minister for planning and supervision on hydrocarbon resources, said at a Sunday conference in
Tehran, Press TV reported.
The official also pointed to Iran’s current
refining capacity of 1.8 million bpd and noted
that the figure will rise to three million in the
next few years.
Meanwhile, Iran has increased its natural
gas production by 100 million cubic meters
and, apart from exports to Iraq, Oman and
Turkey, the country has no problem meeting
its domestic needs during the cold season,
Moazzami pointed out.
In May, the National Iranian Oil Company
(NIOC) said oil production capacity of the Islamic Republic would reach four million bpd
by the end of the current Persian calendar year
in March 2015.
Iran will be capable of extracting from its
oil reservoirs for the next six decades as the
country's proven oil reserves are estimated at
157 billion barrels, the NIOC says.

Iran-Iraq border fully
secure
TEHRAN - Iraq’s Interior Minister Mohammed Salem alGhabban says there is no major security problem along his
country’s border with Iran, adding that Iraq's most secure borders are with the Islamic Republic.
In a meeting with Commander of Iran's Border Police Brigadier General Qassem Rezaei in Baghdad on Sunday, the Iraqi
minister said full security along the two countries’borders emanates from the highest level of mutual relations and security
cooperation, Press TV reported.
He added that the Iraqi government would draw up strategies to enhance security and facilitate visa issuance for Iranian
pilgrims.Ghabban further thanked Iran’s assistance to Iraq in
the fight against the ISIL terrorists.
Iraq has been plagued by violence committed by Takfiri ISIL
militants, who made swift advances in much of northern and
western Iraq over the summer, after capturing large swathes of
northern Syria.Iran has announced its readiness to assist the
neighboring country in its battle against the ISIL militants.
The Iranian commander, for his part, stressed the importance of Tehran-Baghdad ties in security and border sectors
and said, “Iraq’s stability and security is [the same as] Iran’s
stability and security.”
During the meeting, Ghabban and Rezaei discussed major
security issues, particularly those concerning the border areas
and exchange of information.
Spain to host
Sa’adi-Cervantes confab
TEHRAN - Spain is
scheduled to host a joint literary conference on the life and
works of Persian poet Sheikh
Sa’adi and Spanish classic
author Miguel de Cervantes.
The gala will be held in
the Complutense University
of Madrid on October 2829, said Deputy Director of
Iran’s Book City Institute Ali
Asghar Mohammad Khani.
Organized by Tehran’s
Book City Institute, the first
round of Iran and Spain joint
literary meetings was held in
Tehran on April 15-16, Press
TV reported. Spain and Iran
have many commonalities in
various areas such as philosophy, culture, music and literature, Mohammad Khani
said, adding that the seminars
highlight the similarities of
two cultures.
“Similar views are seen
in works of the great classical Persian poet Sa’adi and
the renowned Spanish liter-
ary master Cervantes,” he
stated.
There are many Persian
translated works of Spanish
writers particularly penned
by Cervantes but few Persian literary works have been
translated into Spanish.
Miguel de Cervantes was
a Spanish novelist, poet, and
playwright whose masterpiece Don Quixote is known
as a classic of Western literature.
Published in two volumes,
in 1605 and 1615, Don Quixote is considered the most
influential work of literature
from the Spanish Golden Age
and the entire Spanish literary canon.
Born in 1194 CE, Sa’adi
is best-known for his books
Boustan and Golestan, which
present a peculiar blend of human kindness and cynicism,
humor, and resignation in the
form of stories and personal
anecdotes.
TEHRAN - Iran has called
on Middle Eastern countries
to strengthen collective efforts made to fight terrorist
groups, particularly ISIL
Takfiri militants, under the
present complicated circumstances in the region.
“Currently, regional
countries are facing numerous challenges, which they
will be able to overcome
only through cooperation
and consultation,” Foreign
Minister Mohammad Javad
Zarif said in a meeting with
new Turkish Ambassador to
Tehran Reza Hakan Tekin on
Sunday.

Iran ranking first in Mideast, fourth
in world in bitumen exports
TEHRAN – Managing
Director of Pasargad Oil
Company said Iran stands
in the first place in the Middle East and fourth in the
world with regard to export
of bitumen.
Speaking at the Bitumen
International Conference
here on Sunday, Mohsen
Delaviz further remarked
that at present there is over
100 million tons of world demand for bitumen of which
Iran accounts for 4%.

good plans have been made
for strengthening Iran’s

country has not been able to
play its appropriate role in
the world market.
He said his company’s
policy is based on signing
long-term contracts, adding that an agreement has
been signed with Oman for
the export of 50 thousand
tons of bitumen and there
are two other contracts for
over 2 million tons one of
which is related to a European country.
Delaviz noted that with
the construction of proper
infrastructure the tar production can be doubled
annually, adding that now
Iran’s bitumen is exported
to over 60 world countries.
He said with an increased
capacity Iran can leave
behind South Korea and
stand in the first place in
Asia.
Abu Dhabi Filmfest shows Iran 'Tales'
TEHRAN - The Iranian
drama The Tales directed by
leading female filmmaker
Rakhshan Bani-Etemad represented Iran’s cinema at the
main competition section of
the 8th Abu Dhabi International Film Festival.
Bani-Etemad’s social
drama is composed of seven
short episodes, in which she
reveals the fate of some of
the main characters in her
previous films like The BlueVeiled, Under the Skin of the
City and Mainline.
The film has garnered the
Best Screenplay award at the
2014 International Venice
Film Festival in Italy, Press
TV reported.
The Tales was also displayed at the main competition section of this year’s
Hamburg International Film
Festival in Germany.
Best known for addressing
social problems in her films,
Bani-Etemad has directed
numerous
feature-length
and short films as well as
documentaries, which have
garnered many international
and national awards.
She has said that "the
characters in my films are
real, [from among] the people whom I might meet every
day.”
Many titles in different
categories entered the lineup
of this year’s Abu Dhabi film
festival.
Established in 2007, the
festival is held annually in
October in the United Arab
Emirates.
The 8th Abu Dhabi Film
Festival kicked off on October 24 and is scheduled to run
until November 1.
