Why the Y?
Because of members like Mayra Adams. Since September 2nd, the
Learning Center has been enrolling children in the free preschool
program we are offering this year, thanks to a grant from the Indiana
Family and Social Services Administration. Everyone involved has been
doing their part to make the program a big success. Mayra has been
kind enough to step up to help with the language barrier that we have
had with some of the children and their parents. Mayra assisted with
getting paperwork filled and turned in for the families. She also
donated her time to translate for two of the children while they were
being assessed by an Indiana University evaluator. The evaluator
expressed her gratitude and said that the students would probably
have not scored as high if they had to complete the assessment in
English. The Y...where staff and volunteers come together to improve
the quality of life for our community.

A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
4 Benefits of Group Fitness Classes
Whether you’re just getting into an exercise routine, or have been a fitness
enthusiast for years, group exercise classes are a great way to kick your fitness
level up a notch. With all the different options the Y offers, there’s a group
exercise class for every fitness level and every interest. Love swimming? Try a
Water Aerobics or Water Workout class. Into dancing? Take a ZUMBA, Cardio Kick
or Cardio Dance class. Prefer a quieter workout? Try a Yoga or Pilates class.
Looking for a challenge? You can always enroll in a HIIT (High Intensity Interval
Training), Cycling, Body Sculpting or Cardio Fusion class.
The benefits of taking one of these group fitness classes goes beyond the
obvious. Yes, you’ll get a great workout and improve your health while having fun
doing something you love, but that’s not all. There are many other reasons why
taking a group fitness class at the Y is such a great idea.
1. You’re more likely to show up – and keep showing up. A resolution to exercise won’t do you any good
unless you actually get started…and then keep it up, even when your motivation lags. The fact that the
others in your class, not to mention your instructor, will notice your absence usually provides enough of
an impetus to get people out the door and into the gym. Having that accountability built in is an ideal
way to ensure that you actually keep up with your intention to exercise regularly.
2. Having an instructor ensures proper form. Ever worried you weren’t doing an exercise correctly when
you were alone at home? At a group fitness class, those worries won’t be an issue. Your instructor will
check to see that everyone is doing each exercise correctly, for safety’s sake, as well as to make sure
you’re getting the maximum fitness benefits.
3. You’ll be challenged to push yourself to the next level. When you’re on your own, you may slow down
a little when you get tired, or even give up when you get winded. In a group setting, the instructor will
push you to keep going, even when you think you can’t make it another second. Not only that, but your
classmates will also encourage you, simply by virtue of the fact that they’re still going. If they can do it,
so can you.
4. Group exercise classes are simply…fun! We’ve all heard the advice that in order to really motivate
ourselves to exercise, we should choose an activity we feel is fun, and it’s true! If you love meeting up
with friends to exercise through dance, water aerobics, cycling, or any other of the myriad fun activities
available at the Y, you’re much more likely to show up and give your all every time. Whether it’s the
activity itself, the friendships you’ll form, or even a spirit of friendly competition, enjoying yourself
makes all the difference when it comes to fitness.
Group exercise classes are FREE at the Y. Check out the class schedule available on line or at the front
bulletin board.
Sunshine, smiles, and
God’s blessings,
Executive Director

Why the Y?
Because you can try new things...or things you haven’t done in
years! Take longtime Y member John Whitehair. John had not been
in a pool in 20 years. He comes to the Y regularly to workout and
walk on the treadmill. He saw that the Y was offering an “Adult
Swim Test” to test the 5 survival skills the American Red Cross says
everyone needs to know. John passed with flying colors. He also
realized how much he enjoyed being in the pool again. Now he
swims 3-4 times a week in addition to working out in the fitness
room. “I am up to swimming 2 laps in each of the 4 strokes and am
hoping to work up to 3 or 4,” says John. “Swimming is easy on my
joints and the pool is a safe, comfortable place to exercise.”

I would encourage you to think about your favorite non-profits as you enter this season of giving. For
many of us, your gifts are what help us reach out to those in need. At the Y, we use gifts to support children,
families and seniors who may not otherwise be able to benefit from YMCA programs and services. We try to use
all gifts to best serve our community. If you have any questions regarding how to make a gift to the Y, please
contact me at 934-6006 or stop in my office at the top of the stairs.
