Conservation
Program
The Conservation Program has two Branches. In the framework of graduate training, Fine
Arts Object Conservation students specialize in painting, wood and stone sculpture
conservation and restoration. Students of the part-time program – which offers Applied Arts
Object Conservation training in cooperation with the Hungarian National Museum –
specialize in the following five categories: wooden objects and furniture, metal and
goldsmith’s art, paper and leather, textiles and leather, and siliceous objects.
The program prepares students for independent conservation work and research, as well
as producing high quality documentation. The objective of the program is to provide
students with specialized artistic and professional skills, as well as to train experts who are
able –independently or in collaboration with museologists and scientific experts – to carry
out and evaluate research on the manufacture process and technique of art objects, to
conduct material testing, assess their condition, and to plan and carry out their rescue,
cleaning, conservation and restoration. Students acquire skills related to the protection of
art objects and monuments, the study of materials, physics, chemistry, microscopy and
analysis, iconography, museology and manufacture techniques. They also plan and
prepare the restoration process, based on independent practical research and a study of

DLA Doctoral
Program
The Doctoral School of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts provides opportunity for
concentrated creative work and research for professional artists. It encourages free
thinking, inviting students for an intellectual adventure shared by tutors and other doctoral
candidates. It offers a framework within which different generations and the most varied
approaches to – and trajectories of – art can come together and interact in a mutually
rewarding way. The school organises lectures by local and international lecturers on topics
chosen with the general consent of the students and faculty of the Doctoral School. The
Doctoral School is a vibrant community, where participants can meet on a weekly basis to
learn about one another’s work, as well as monitor and discuss the development of
individual projects, with special emphasis on collaborations. The evaluation of the students’
work is based on the recognition of their individual artistic research. Upon successful
completion of the program, candidates are granted a doctoral degree, which is a minimum
requirement in Hungary for teaching jobs at the university level. The Doctoral School places
importance on individual creative activity, the result of which is validated by the completed
diploma work. With a view to the fact that successful candidates become qualified
university teachers, a written dissertation, communicating new results, is also a mandatory
requirement of the school, corresponding to the forms developed in various fields of
scientific research.

In the framework of the Intermedia Program, art education and training is extended to
artistic forms and techniques which first emerged in the visual arts of the 20th century.
Technical (new) media caused major changes in art and culture as well as in every
segment of contemporary life. Artists need new and different types of skills and knowledge
to be able to find their roles in a landscape dominated by the changing relationship of art,
science and technology. Research and experiment have become keywords both in art
practice and theory. The main characteristics of productive art is related more to
experiment than to expression. Contemporary artists should think, explore, create,
comprehend, act, communicate and for this purpose they may use any accessible tool or
media: old, new, analogue, digital or not-yet-invented. The program allows students to
explore their own unique skills and abilities. Students are trained to combine the various
techniques, tools, methods and functions of artistic creativity. They are expected to
understand and use technical media (photography, film, video, computer, etc.) in an artistic
context and a
content-based manner. Students of the program acquire an understanding of the new local
and global function of making art and the role of the artist in this changing environment,
essentially leading to an in-depth comprehension of cognitive artistic behaviour.

Painting
Program
Scenography
Program
Theoretical and practical training in the Painting Program is taught in a traditional
formulation of students gathered around professors (tutor system). This approach not only
presupposes ongoing cooperation between mentor and students in an informal, quasiseminar environment, but it also permits in-house evaluation as well as real-world tests of
talent by means of mid- and end-of-year exhibitions, debuts, art competitions, and degree
shows. The program is based on the European painting tradition and aims to train painters
who, in possession of their acquired skills, their own personal approach and ability for selfexpression, will become artists capable of pursuing their activities in an autonomous
manner. The Painting Department collaborates with other Departments and international
partner institutions organizing joint thematic exhibitions and competitions. Beyond providing
training in techniques and traditions, discussions about contemporary art phenomena, as
well as new technical, stylistic and medial problems, also comprise part of the program.
Graduates are expected to have a firm grasp of the tools of expression in – and the
possibilities of – universal painting, as well as its materials and techniques. The overlaps
between fine arts genres, which have become increasingly characteristic of recent times,
due in no small part to the influence of new media and information technology, are clearly
manifest in the diversity of our students’ work.

The Scenography Department has developed its program in view of a new trend in the
universal theatre and motion picture arts, according to which the creation of a complex
visual world in performing arts is to be interpreted within a unified framework, often within
the competence of the same artist.
The Scenography Program is divided into two parts. The objective of the three-year BA
Program is to lay the professional foundations of scenography and to impart the required
skills and knowledge to students in Stage Costume and Puppet Design. In the two-year MA
program, students embark on an indepth exploration of the possible personal
approaches to – and methodology of – art. The artistic program aims to provide a fullscope education in theatre, and to endow students with a complex artistic qualification that
can equally satisfy the demands of traditional and new terrains in art. Thanks to this
integrated training scheme, our graduates enter the labour market equipped with the
intellectual and technical skills of the digital age.

exploration of the main aspects of sculptural trends, techniques and materials from a
creative position. The curriculum is supplemented for students higher up in their studies by
thematic assignments, the planning of exhibition concepts and the invitation of Hungarian
and international guest lecturers. The program also launches its own sculpture history and
sculpture theory courses each year, entitled “Modern Hungarian Sculpture,” “Sculpture in
Architectural Space” and “The Free Spirit of Sculpture.” Students have the
opportunity to exhibit their works completed during the academic year in the Kálvária
(Calvary) exhibition hall and the Parthenon Frieze Hall of Epreskert (Mulberry Garden). The
plaster, metal, stone and bronze casting workshops can be used under the supervision of

The PhD students of the Doctoral School of Animal Husbandry do their research work in
fields which are of great interest to those agrarians working in the agricultural firms and
enterprises. R&D work is an essential task of the doctoral school, because in the animal
husbandry sector it ranks as one of the most important and has long-established traditions,
which deserve preservation. An even more significant factor is the development, working
out and dissemination of new scientific results. Recently, research in the Doctoral School
has been carried out within the framework of several programmes, primarily, in the
programme: "Environmentally-friendly animal keeping based on regional resources". In this
period, research was concentrated on the questions of sheep breeding and feeding. The
PhD
other major fields were research on fishery and fish breeding, and the diverse subject of
fresh water fishery. Additionally, the questions of animal keeping by grazing were also an
important part of research at the Doctoral School, such as the relationship between the
animal and the grazing land and some problems of grass production and grassland
management. Presently, the broadening of the Doctoral School's activities is in progress.
The Doctoral School provides the possibility for research and doctoral work in the area of
cattle and horse breeding, poultry keeping, game management, molecular and quantitative
genetics and breeding, proteomics.
