the good old age of 87 (that’s me) you can still compete with the
best. I have one wall that shows trophies (mostly 80+) for Rock
’n’ Roll races. Wish I was younger so I could plan on doing Dublin,
Savanna, Madrid, Edinburgh and others. I’m walking about a 16+
minute mile.

Each week, we pair a member with a new pair of sneakers.
When Kiera Parton turned 30, she started to run. “I work in reception in a small office so I sit
all day,” she says. “I decided that for my 30th year, I would get in better shape and part of
that was to run.” Like lots of new runners, Parton’s first step was to the Running Room, where
she entered a 5K Learn to Run class. Immediately, she felt the buzz. “What I enjoy most about
running is getting outside and letting all the day’s stresses disappear,” she says. After beginning her running in January, Parton has now completed five 5Ks, three 10Ks and the half
marathon. (She completed the Lululemon SeaWheeze in August.) Now, as she embarks on
the first Rock ’n’ Roll event in Vancouver, Brooks is setting her up with a race shirt and shorts,
and a pair of their Glycerin 12 shoes. Her goal for Sunday’s event is the same as it always is:
to do better than her last race. However, as a seasoned race pro attempting her second half
marathon, she knows that the real victories have little to do with finishing time. She says,
“When I am running I can let all my worries run through my head and I will sort them out
without having to really dwell on them.”
