As discussed in Blaige & Company’s comprehensive Twelve Year Plastics and Packaging M&A Consolidation Study, approximately 58% of the top 50 plastics and packaging companies of 2001 have undergone a change of ownership or have been eliminated. Blaige will provide summary analysis from the 84-page study and cover valuable strategies to help company owners understand how to survive and thrive in an increasingly competitive market. 10.15 – 10.45 Innovation in IML Duncan Henshall, Market Director, Taghleef Industries 10:45 – 11.30 Coffee & Networking Break 11.30 -12.00pm New Technologies in the field of die-cutting Reto Frei, Area Sales Manager, Berhalter AG 12.00 – 12.30 The Use of MuCell with IML and with IMD Brent Strawbridge, Vice President Sales, Trexel, Inc. 3-D IML: enhancing brand presentation with unique soft touch effect while manufactured at 13% less weight, only possible by utilizing MuCell technology. The 3-D in mold label is processed with an injection-molded tub made of expanded PP. Gas-filled cavities, created by the migration of nitrogen introduced by controlled use of the MuCell process, between tub and in mold label provide a soft touch effect and can be used for forming more complex surface structures right up to Braille writing. At the same time, these cavities can have an insulating effect for hot and cold usage. The base tub is also designed with a physical foaming technology making it lighter and less costly to produce than a solid tub. 12.30 – 1.30 Lunch Concurrent Sessions The afternoon program will be divided into two concurrent sessions, one focused on IML, and one focused on IMD. Conference Program (day 1) February 18. 2015 IML Session - Hall One 1.30 - 2.00 Today’s Challenges: Adapting to the Increasing Demands of In-Mold Labeling Valérie Jean-Louis, Operations Manager, IML Labels Just a few years ago, In-Mold Labeling made its appearance on the North-American market. As a new technology, the obstacles were mainly technical and there was very little experience available. Now the expectations are changing as major brand owners are adopting the technology and now have the knowledge base to raise their expectations. How must we adapt in order to be able to respond? Color control, just-in-time deliveries, quality, food safety etc. How are today’s challenges asking us to adapt? 2.00 - 2.30 T-IML: Get the most out of it! Thomas Stahl, Sales Manager, ILLIG Maschinenbau GmbH Thermoformed cups can be decorated in various ways using the IML method integrated in the thermoforming process by ILLIG: Each one of the five outside surfaces (bottom as well) can be individually designed. Packs featuring attractive and high-quality decoration are a decisive sales argument at the POS. In-mold Labeling (IML-T) provides this option for thermoformed packs. ILLIG realized this technology e.g. in the latest development of the FSL 48, the first form, fill and seal line worldwide designed for specific applications in the food industry. A classic thermoforming machine of the RDM-K series, the RDML 70b, featuring a forming area of 680 mm x 300 mm, was also developed to market maturity. Both IML-T lines, FSL 48 and RDML 70b, are available in serial version and have been standing the test in daily practical operation. 2.30 - 3.00 High Cavitation IML Systems and Next Generation TRIM (Thin Recess Injection Molding) Jordan Robertson, General Manager, Business Development and Marketing, StackTeck The case for running high cavitation IML products (i.e. more than 16 cavities) using 2 level stack molds with suitable automation will be reviewed, with a particular focus on containers with a wrap-around label. Flexible stack mold design capability will be presented, including both internal and external gating options, as well as quick-change capability. Next generation TRIM developments will also be described, with a focus on maximizing ultra-lightweight capability to achieve IML parts with L/T ratios greater than 500. Approaches to take this technology to its limit will be discussed, as well as the different challenges for round and non-round IML parts. 3.00 - 3.45 Coffee & Networking Break 3.45 - 4.15 When should Vision Systems be used for IML Applications? Taras Konowal, Managing Partner, Fame Technology Solutions Vision Systems and camera technology have made tremendous leaps in their applications in manufacturing. The strengths of this technology can now be economically applied to IML in order to reduce labor, scrap and to improve the overall efficiency of the IML process. Knowing the strengths and weaknesses of the technology can greatly assist in optimizing the IML systems and guarantee that only good parts are shipped to your customer. 4.15 - 4.45 Changing Face of In-Mold Labels Precision Press Discover the possibilities that laminated in-mold labels can bring to barrier and packaging functionality. Creating container walls from labels …..the ultimate in thin wall packaging. Blocking oxygen, vapor/moisture, ultra violet light or protect from solvents and abrasion; we will discuss how this can be accomplished with thin film lamination while preserving the rich high quality offset graphics so desired with in-mold labeling. 4.45 - 5.00 Session Close 5.00 - 6.30 Cocktail Reception Conference Program (day 1) February 18. 2015 IMD Session - Hall Two 1.30 - 2.00 IMD Market potential & How to Choose the Right Decorative Process Garry Hallam, General Manager, Eimo Technologies First we will take a look at the historical markets for IMD and how the segments have shifted over the last 20 years. Then we will discuss some of the emerging markets and strategies to penetrate those markets. The second half of the presentation will be discussing how to understand customer requirements and choose the appropriate decorative process to fit their cost, styling, and performance requirements. The presentation is very experiential based and will focus on stories and concepts vs reciting tables of data, etc. It is important we keep a sense of humor and a pride in our work to survive in the sometimes thankless job of manufacturing 2.00 - 2.30 IMD Innovations Mark Keeton, Director of Marketing, Standard Register 2.30 - 3.00 The Third Dimension Print Version Advanced Decorating Systems 3.00 - 3.45 Coffee & Networking Break 3.45 - 4.15 Topic to be Announced Ed Ferber, Market Development Research, Eastman Chemical Company 4.15 - 4.45 Speaker to be Announced 4.45 - 5.00 Session Close 5.00 - 6.30 Cocktail Reception Sponsors: Conference Program (day 2) February 19. 2015 Program Day Two 8.45 - 9.00am Conference Opening & Welcome 9.00 - 9.30 Topic to be Announced Jon Knight, Commercial Director, Packaging & Labels (Americas).
