Maybe you're hearing it for the first time (it is only a few years old) or maybe you're hearing it again with fresh ears: "We are Disciples of Christ, a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. As part of the one body of Christ, we welcome all to the Lord's Table as God has welcomed us." As I said on Sunday, this statement recognizes that we are one movement of many, but it states the Disciples' focus, a focus we have had for nearly 200 years. In a world that constantly divides and separates, we have been working to include and unite. Recognizing our central belief, that God loves us all and offers reconciliation to all, we work to extend the welcome that God has given to us. In our central act of worship, the Lord's Supper, we gather at the table and do not put up barriers. The invitation is not ours but God's. As we think about Getting Out Of Doors, being G.O.O.D., think about the power of this message. Christians for too long have been known as people who exclude, people who aren't welcoming. This one fundamental belief, that God welcomes us all to the table, speaks volumes above the past hurts and divisions of the church. Can we take that message of welcome with us as we leave on Sunday mornings? Can we extend that welcome to those who have been excluded before? Are we ready for the surprises that God gives us when we break down those barriers? I think so, and prayerfully know we will continue to extend God's welcome as a church for generations to come! —Pastor Travis P.S. - The Identity statement is at http://disciples.org/our-identity/identity-statement-and-principles/.
