Welcome Visitors! We are delighted to have you in our assembly today and hope that our
worship together will be encouraging to you. We ask that you please fill out an attendance
card located on the back of the pew in front of you. These will be collected at the end of our
service. We are glad you are here and hope you will come again soon!
Of Special Note:
Copies of sermons are available on CD by request. You may indicate your request on your
visitor card.
An attended nursery is available for your convenience. It is located just off the foyer next
to the Women’s restroom.
Things That Go Bump In The Night
Around this time of year our attention tends to turn toward terrifying things.
You begin to notice the decorations and the costumes in the stores. You see the
advertisements for haunted houses, corn mazes and hayrides. Hollywood always
releases several scary movies in October. For some reason we humans like to be
scared from time to time.
If you are looking for scary, there are some pretty frightening things in the
Scriptures that should keep us up at night, not trembling in fear, but thanking God or
petitioning Him in prayer for help. The Bible teaches us about the reality of hell,
which is the scariest topic I can think of. What could be more awful than being
separated from the love and light that is God for eternity? What could be worse than
confinement to eternal darkness with all of the wicked and evil throughout history
(Matthew 22:13)?
However, you don’t have to talk about hell to find scary stuff in the Scriptures.
The subject of demons has long been a fascination in pop culture and it is a very
Biblical subject. The Bible makes it abundantly clear that in addition to our visible,
physical world, there is an unseen spirit world that is inhabited by angels and demons.
The Scriptures also reveal that historically there have been times when those two
worlds cross paths, resulting in some terrifying things. One of those things was demon
possession. There is much confusion concerning demon possession, due in large part
to the popularity of the William Peter Blatty novel and movie The Exorcist. The
release of this book and movie in the 1970’s launched an fear and an obsession with
the topic of demons, the occult and the spirit world.
Rather than relying on the unreliable Hollywood to educate us on this real
topic, we are going to turn our attention to the Scriptures today and learn what God
has to say about Demons and Demon Possession. Hope you enjoy the study, learn
something helpful and bring someone with you.
