Psalm 23 Prayer Morning Hymn: No, Not One #308 Greetings/Fellowship Video Announcements The Ministry of Music Offertory Period Sermon Dr. Marcus D. Davidson, Senior Pastor Invitation to Christian Discipleship Benediction As we embrace a new year and our new theme on Fellowship, scripture gives us some insight into how we show hospitality to others and to whom we show that hospitality. While it’s easy to fellowship with those we know and have similarities with, God’s formula for fellowship calls us to extend our fellowship to the least, the lost and the left out. Happy Birthday to all Members and Friends who will Celebrate a birthday in the month of October! Please pick-up a copy of the information leaflet in the lobby to learn more about this new ministry initiative! Health & Wellness Ministry October Is Cancer Awareness Month Q: What is a mammogram? A: A mammogram is a low-dose x-ray exam of the breasts to look for changes that are not normal. The results are recorded on x-ray film or directly into a computer for a doctor called a radiologist to examine. A mammogram allows the doctor to have a closer look for changes in breast tissue that cannot be felt during a breast exam. It is used for women who have no breast complaints and for women who have breast symptoms, such as a change in the shape or size of a breast, a lump, nipple discharge, or pain. Breast changes occur in almost all women. In fact, most of these changes are not cancer and are called “benign,” but only a doctor can know for sure. Breast changes can also happen monthly, due to your menstrual period. cancer as early as possible? Q: What is the best method of detecting breast cancer? A: A high-quality mammogram plus a clinical breast exam, an exam done by your doctor, is the most effective way to detect breast cancer early. Finding breast cancer early greatly improves a woman’s chances for successful treatment. Like any test, mammograms have both benefits and limitations. For example, some cancers can’t be found by a mammogram, but they may be found in a clinical breast exam. Checking your own breasts for lumps or other changes is called a breast self-exam (BSE). Studies so far have not shown that BSE alone helps reduce the number of deaths from breast cancer. BSE should not take the place of routine clinical breast exams and mammograms. If you choose to do BSE, remember that breast changes can occur because of pregnancy, aging, menopause, menstrual cycles, or from taking birth control pills or other hormones. It is normal for breasts to feel a little lumpy and uneven. Also, it is common for breasts to be swollen and tender right before or during a menstrual period. If you notice any unusual changes in your breasts, contact your doctor. Health Education Team The Health and Wellness Ministry is seeking nutritionists and dieticians for a very special project. If you are interested, please sign up at the “S” Desk or call 954-463-5126 and someone will contact you with additional information. Health & Wellness Ministry Facts About Ebola Ebola virus is not spread through: ● Casual Contact ● Air ● Water ● Food grown or legally purchased in the U.S. How do you get the Ebola virus? Direct contact with: 1. Body fluids of a person who is sick with or has died from Ebola. (blood, vomit, urine, feces, sweat, semen, spit, other fluids). 2. Objects contaminated with the virus (needles, medical equipment). 3. Infected animals (by contact with blood or fluids or infected meat). Early Symptoms: Ebola can only be spread to others after symptoms begin. Symptoms can appear from 2 to 21 days after exposure. ● Fever ● Headache ● Diarrhea ● Vomiting ● Stomach pain ● Unexplained bleeding or bruising ● Muscle pain. When is someone able to spread the disease to others? Ebola only spreads when people are sick. A patient must have symptoms to spread the disease to others. After 21 days, if an exposed person does not develop symptoms, they will not become sick with Ebola. Flu Season The 2014-2015 Flu Season is upon us! The CDC recommends an annual flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older. Some people are at high risk for developing serious flu-related complications if they get sick. This includes people 65 years and older, people of any age with certain chronic medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease), pregnant women and young children. It is highly important that you PROTECT YOURSELF from communicable diseases for which VACCINES have been especially developed. Flu seasons are unpredictable and deaths can range from as low as 3,000 to 49, 000 people per season. For more information on ways to prevent the flu or myths associated with the flu vaccine see the S Desk. Finance Ministry Financial Literacy Bible Tip for Managing Your Finances GUARD AGAINST There are many warnings in the Bible about giving in to greed and longing for riches. Jesus warned, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions” (Luke 12:15). “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal… You cannot serve both God and money” (Matthew 6:19 and 24). Did Jesus pursue the acquisition of money? No. On the contrary, He became poor for our sake (2 Corinthians 8:9) and had “no place to lay his head” (Matthew 8:20). The only disciple concerned with wealth was the embezzler Judas, who betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. Greed and a desire for riches are traps that bring ruin and destruction.
