With its modular design, high resolution images, proprietary lighting system and recording capabilities, this device represents a state-of-the-art solution to both routine and difficult intubation procedures, in multiple environments. While the VLS 6600 is fairly intuitive to assemble and operate, these instructions will serve as a reference for operation and maintenance of the device. Please read the instructions carefully before attempting to operate the VLS 6600. I. Device Assembly and Disassembly 1. Select the appropriate VLS video blade for the patient size and anatomy. 2. Position the blade connection point to the video handle mounting block and snap into position by pushing down on the tip of the blade. 3. Orient the 6600 video/DVR display connector to the video connection on the top of the VLS handle, and position the marks on the connector to align with the opposing mark on the handle. 4. Gently push the display connector into the handle connection until a positive “click” is felt and the locking sleeve on the connector moves down close to the connection point. The monitor is now locked into place. 5. Disassembly is accomplished by grasping the movable locking sleeve on the monitor connector in Step 4 above and pulling it up and away from the handle. This action will release the locking mechanism of the connector and allow separation of the handle and monitor. 6. Removal of the video blade from the handle is accomplished through the reverse of the action in Step 2: pulling up on the tip of the blade and separating the blade connection point from the handle mounting block 3 IntuBrite VLS 6600 Manual L040-0612 Rev A eff 6/2013 II. Operating the VLS 6600 Monitor Startup 1. Press, briefly hold and then release the PWR key in the lower left hand corner of the monitor. The system will then power up and display the IntuBrite logo for a few seconds, and will then be fully functional. If a video blade is appropriately fitted to the handle, an image from the camera will appear on the screen. 2. Upon turning on the monitor, for a few seconds the screen will project in the lower left hand corner a small battery symbol icon indicating the power level of the monitor’s internal rechargeable lithium battery. The date and time will also be displayed. 3. If the battery is adequately charged, the icon will soon disappear. If the battery is low in power and in need of recharging, the icon will remain on the screen until the device is either recharged with the external mini-USB recharger cord, or power is eventually exhausted and the monitor turns itself off. The icon will flash when the battery nears depletion of its power. III. VLS 6600 System Operation The VLS 6600 is designed to be used with standard laryngoscopy technique similar to that of direct laryngoscopy. Please refer to qualified instructors who provide specialized training in endotracheal intubation techniques before attempting to use this device with human subjects. Video Blades 1. Cleaning: The blade and handle should be appropriately cleaned and/or sterilized before use (see cleaning instructions in PART IV). 2. Anti-Fog: The sapphire lens of the VLS video blade features an electrical lens heating element which helps eliminate lens fogging in the warm and humid conditions of the airway. The heating element is powered by the handle battery, and begins functioning when the blade is fully engaged with the handle as indicated by the illumination of the LEDs on the blade. Depending upon the initial temperature of the blade, the lens should be fully fog-resistant within 30 seconds of the connection of the blade to the handle. 4 IntuBrite VLS 6600 Manual L040-0612 Rev A eff 6/2013 A. Cleaning Instructions Please carefully follow the operating instructions from the manufacturer of any cleaning/sterilization device utilized to clean and decontaminate IntuBrite devices 1. Handle The VLS handle can be cleaned through a variety of methods. The battery should first be removed from the handle, and the cap replaced. - Wipe down or soak with anti-microbial solutions - Bath sterilization methods (i.e. Steris or STERRAD) - Steam autoclave The electrical connector is waterproof, and does not require special treatment or covering during sterilization. 2. Video blade Given its electrical componentry, the VLS blade should not be exposed to extreme temperatures during cleaning. The blade can be sterilized through - Anti-microbial soaking - Steris or STERRAD processing 7 IntuBrite VLS 6600 Manual L040-0612 Rev A eff 6/2013 3. VLS 6600 Display The display is not waterproof and should not be submerged or exposed to excessive amounts of fluids. The face of the unit, including the front control buttons, is sealed and can be cleaned with anti-microbial solution wipes. Cleaning of the remainder of the unit should be done carefully to avoid introducing liquids into the interior of the monitor. V. Batteries and Battery Maintenance The VLS 6600 system is equipped with rechargeable lithium ion batteries. These batteries are designed to independently provide optimal power to the monitor and the video blades, and can be fully recharged many times. For convenience, the monitor and handle batteries can be recharged simultaneously; see #3 below. 1. Monitor battery The rechargeable battery in the VLS 6600 monitor powers the unit independently. It is not accessible other than to connect to a charger via the mini-USB charging port on the side of the unit. The LED on the face of the monitor will illuminate GREEN when the battery is charging, and will cease to illuminate when the monitor battery is fully charged. - Life of one full charge in continuous use: 2.5 hours (average) - Time to recharge: up to 3 hours from fully discharged state - Working life: up to 3 years (average) The VLS monitor can be continuously attached to the charger for long periods of time between uses without damaging the battery. Lithium ion batteries also do not exhibit “memory” characteristics, and do not require deep cycle depletion and recharging regimens to maintain peak functionality. Note: Allowing rechargeable lithium batteries to fully discharge can damage the battery and reduce performance significantly. Full discharge of the batteries should be avoided. 2. Handle Battery The AA size 3.7v lithium ion rechargeable battery in the VLS video handle powers the camera, LEDs and lens heating element in the video blade. It is accessible by removing the cap on the top of the handle, and can be recharged through the use of a wall charger. 8 IntuBrite VLS 6600 Manual L040-0612 Rev A eff 6/2013 Ensure that the AA-size battery is placed in the correct orientation in the charger. The LED on the charger will illuminate RED while charging the battery, and GREEN when the battery is fully charged. - Handle Battery Characteristics: 3.7 volt rechargeable lithium ion, AA size Life of one full charge in continuous use: up to 2 hours (average) Time to recharge: approximately 3 hours from fully discharged state Working life: up to 3 years (average) The AA size 3.7 volt rechargeable handle batteries can be continuously attached to their charger for long periods of time. These batteries also do not exhibit “memory” characteristics, and do not require deep cycle depletion and recharging regimens to maintain peak functionality. 3. Simultaneous monitor/handle battery charging The monitor and handle batteries may be more conveniently recharged together through the monitor charger. This is accomplished by plugging the mini-USB charger into the monitor with the handle and monitor attached, and the battery installed in the handle as normal. Circuitry in the monitor will direct current to charge the handle battery first, as indicated by a RED illumination of the LED on face of the monitor. When the handle battery is fully charged, the LED will turn GREEN in color and current will then be directed to charge the monitor battery. Total time to recharge the combined blade/handle system from a fully discharged state is up to 6 hours. When the monitor battery is fully charged, the LED will cease to illuminate. The entire unit is then fully charged and ready for use. 9 IntuBrite VLS 6600 Manual L040-0612 Rev A eff 6/2013 VI.
