Purbeck Film Festival 2014
Our focus this year is on Italian Cinema and with
good reason, for over the years the Italian film
industry has won more Oscars for best foreign film
than any other country, not to mention an impressive
host of Palmes d'Or. You will find eighteen of the
finest of these films in our programme this year.
The festival also presents a bird's eye view of the
best of British cinema leavened of course with a choice selection
from world cinema: six from France, three from Australia and some
beguiling tales from Norway, Denmark, India and Iran. There are
also four brilliant animations which I hope you will enjoy.
All this is backed up by our special exhibition at Durlston Castle
which includes visuals from Italian cinema and exhibits loaned
from Aardman, showing how the hilarious animated characters
from Creature Comforts were made.
Times have moved on since La Dolce Vita was everyone's signal
Italian film. Maybe we are less mesmerised by the glitz and
glamour of the life it portrayed, or is it that we are just that much
older? You have a chance to decide when you see our selection.
I like to think it is because we have grown accustomed to the good
life here in Purbeck every day of the year.

Festival Venues
The unique Rex Cinema in Wareham, under the ownership of
Purbeck Film Charitable Trust, is the main Festival venue and a
nostalgic viewing experience, although right up to date with its
digital projection and new sound system. The Rex bar will be open
forty-five minutes before the main or second feature. On-street
parking and nearby car parks.
The Lighthouse in Poole will be showing a full programme of films
during the Festival with plenty of comfy seats. Food is available at
the Café before a film and drinks served in its 1st floor bar. Easy
parking nearby in the multi-storey car park.
We are delighted to welcome a new venue in Bournemouth this
year. Pavilion Dance South West (PDSW) is a registered charity,
working across the South West to celebrate and support dance as
an art form. In its Bournemouth venue, Pavilion Dance offers live
performances, film screenings and more than 40 weekly classes
and workshops.
In Swanage films are screened at Durlston Castle, The Black Swan
Inn and The Grand Hotel, the last two offering food in addition to
a film.
We shall also be visiting Village Halls and other interesting and
unusual Venues. For those not listed above, see our website for
where to find them.

Ticket prices are listed next to each event. You can book in
advance for ALL Festival events from early September. Tickets
are also available on the door from 30 minutes before the start of
each screening but many shows sell out well in advance so early
booking is recommended. For small venues the online allocation
may run out quickly, in which case contact the suppliers listed
against individual screenings. Rex Cinema Tickets this year for
the first time you can buy tickets for all the Rex festival films at its
Box Office when it is open 30 minutes before each film screening.

Our Exhibition this year centres upon Italian film and
animation. Aardman are sending us an exhibit of their
characters from Creature Comforts and the Media students
of Bournemouth and Poole College are providing the general
background material to the processes of animation and its
history.
In addition The Eclectic Abode in Swanage is kindly lending
us a number of memorabilia from Roman Holiday. We will
have on view the script, lobby cards, press books, calendar
and production shots arranged in narrative order. With full
size posters, camera displays and a presentation of all
our venues the Exhibition provides another interesting and
informative introduction to film.

THE SIX-SIDED TRIANGLE U On
This witty satirical short film parodies the style of 6 directors from
different countries. Each section shows how differing national styles
might deal with the theme of the eternal triangle, husband, wife and
wife's lover. Critics praised the expert observation of film styles,
and the film was Oscar nominated. With this entertaining start to the
festival we are fortunate enough to have the director, Christopher
Miles (brother of Sarah Miles, star of the film) to introduce the film.

A DAY IN VENICE
CONVERSATIONS ABOUT VENICE, ITALY and
FILM
with John Julius Norwich and Christopher Miles
John Julius Norwich, diplomat, historian, prolific author of travel,
literary and architectural works including 'A History of Venice',
and 'Paradise of Cities, Venice and its 19th century Visitors',
and presenter of some 30 TV documentaries will be engaged in
conversation by his old friend and colleague, Christopher Miles,
British film director, producer and screenwriter. Perhaps best
known for The Virgin and The Gypsy and The Priest of Love as well
as our opening, Oscar-nominated short, The Six-Sided Triangle,
Christopher is Professor Emeritus of Film and TV at the Royal
College of Art and winner of the Golden Globe and many prizes
from international film festivals. The conversation will be followed
by an opportunity for Q and A.
We are extremely grateful that this unique event is made possible
through the Dick Odgers' Memorial Fund.
At 1.00pm the conversation will be followed by an Italian inspired
buffet lunch provided by Love Cake (of High Street, Swanage) in
the Rex auditorium and bar.

Gassman) who tours Italy with his young aid in order to sate his
libidinous appetites and bring his life to a kind of closure. He's
a crass old man, hiding his bitterness and loneliness behind

BOURNEMOUTH ARTS BY THE SEA FESTIVAL
What fate became the fifty brides of Bournemouth, last seen
disappearing over the horizon in 2013? The story continues
with Resurrection of the Sea Brides, a gothic spectacular in the
historic Shelley Theatre and grounds. Artist Zerelda Sinclair, once
described as the ‘wicked stepmother of Bournemouth’, presents
a new performance inspired by the ancient Venetian ‘Marriage
of the Sea’ ritual. Featuring haunting choral soundscapes by Ali
Sharpe and Language, Timothy!, associate artists Kate O’Malley
and Denise Poote, and fifty local women young and old. Not for the
faint hearted. For the full Gothic experience, a screening of Ken

An archeologist discovers a skull in the ruins of a convent,
and sets off a chain of events connected to the legend
of a dragon-like ‘worm’ seemingly worshipped as a god.
Named the D’ampton worm in the film, those of a Geordie
background might recognise the Lambton worm, an old legend

Described as "one of the most effective films on a
religious theme ever made", Pasolini's Jesus is often
depicted as a man angered by social injustice,
using parables to make anti-establishment points
attracting both followers and the ire of the ruling
Pharisees. The film's beauty derives from its simplicity - no flashy
effects, the dialogue using only the words of Matthew and the nonprofessional actors for the cast. The Italian landscape makes a
convincing backdrop and Pasolini's use of an astoundingly diverse

PAINTED ANGELS aka Prairie Doves 15
Cath Newman's Desert Island Flick. This 1998 film
debunks the myth of the good-time Saloon girl prostitutes portrayed
in “Westerns”. Based on diaries and newspaper reports of the time,
it describes the true emotional and physical poverty of the thousands
of women whose only chance to make a living was to sell their souls
and bodies in godforsaken frontier towns. British director Jon Sanders
allows us a glimpse into the life of an 1870’s brothel, run by hard-asnails madame Annie Ryan played to perfection by Brenda Fricker.
This slow moving, thought provoking and sometimes heartbreaking
film is beautifully detailed and flawlessly acted, bringing us close
to the true experience of the women portrayed. And if you begin to

and sombre, film. Fans of Scandi Noir TV will recognise Soren Malling

With its gritty slice of life feel and depiction of the minutiae, Fruitvale
Station almost feels like a documentary. By concentrating on a myriad
of little things to create a rich characterisation of its central character,
Oscar Grant III (Michael B. Jordan) who was tragically and senselessly
killed by police on New Year’s Eve, 2008, Ryan Coogler’s directing
debut provides a rich and intimate insight. Real world violence,
especially when law enforcement and racial politics are involved,
is all too easily sensationalised when adapted into a feature film,
but Coogler counteracts that expectation, by treating the incident
as just that, an incident in the greater context of an ordinary day.

A kindly old woman finds a baby in her cabbage
patch and decides to raise him as her own son. When
she dies though, the little boy, whom she has named
Totò, is sent to an orphanage. Upon leaving the
orphanage at the age of 18, Totò fatefully arrives at a
shantytown on the outskirts of Milan. Here, the young
man quickly sets to work with a rather miraculous spring in his step.
We watch intently, entranced at once by his innate compassion and
instinctive generosity. And soon enough there is indeed a fine little
town for the poorest of society. This idyllic new life is soon shattered
however by the discovery of oil, with the spectacularly wealthy Mr
Mobbi wanting his land back, and the pitiful squatters out of his
sight at once. It would take a miracle for him to change his mind.

Steven Soderbergh about the last ten years in the life
of pianist Liberace and the secret affair he had with

of the Ray and Diana Harryhausen Foundation.
Harryhausen's legacy is out there in the world and
on our screens regularly but the artefacts from
production also exist and can be visited. Tony will give us the inside
story from his vantage point.

of Gwangi, very appropriate for Durlston Castle, the HQ of the
