2014 AIHA Alberta Local Section Presents: November 27, 2014 1–DAY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COURSE Welding: An Occupational Health Perspective presented by Mike Harris, Ph.D., CIH Hamlin & Harris, Incorporated in Baton Rouge, Louisiana This one day professional development course describes common welding and thermal cutting processes and the health/safety hazards associated with these processes. As a seasoned welder Mike will introduce participants to the terminology used in the welding industry which is incorporated throughout the PDC to ensure that participants are familiar with the vocabulary used in the workplace. Materials, thermal processes and scenarios associated with potential for overexposures are described. Emphasis is placed on Manganese and Hexavalent chromium exposures, as well as many other health and safety hazards associated with welding. Mike will provide the participants with useful suggestions for improving the quality of monitoring data and for prioritizing exposure assessments. Ventilation techniques and respiratory protection options to minimize worker exposure to welding health and safety hazards are also described.
