Welcome back to all for Term 4!

Values
Fruits of the Spirit
Proverbs 17:22
“A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.”
I’ve heard that children laugh 300 to 400 times a day while we adults laugh only a
mere 15!
So do kids know something that we don’t?
Experts say that laughing aids digestion, lowers blood pressure, reduces stress
hormones, boosts the immune system and produces a general sense of well-being.
Galatians 5:22-23
Love
With the business of the last term of the school year, we can all forget to have fun.
Joy
God gave us life to be enjoyed. Jesus said “I came that they may have and enjoy life,
and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows).” John 10:10.
Peace
Patience

A huge big congratulations to Sian Williams (2.1) who was named Young
Leader in The Sunday Times’ Pride of Australia awards, a category that
recognises a person under 25 years who has advanced the community
through academic or personal endeavours.
Additionally, Sian was recognised with a Human Rights Hero Award at the
Youth for Human Rights Summit in Brussels last month, making her one of
the youngest children in the world to receive the honour.
As a victim of bullying herself, Sian initiated Kidzucate Inc. a non-profit and
charity organisation group providing community-based education to promote
& protect the human rights of our youth. If you want to find out more
During the school holidays Erin Classen (4.2) and Dylan Classen
(4.1) both competed in the 2014 Australian Junior Squash
Championships held in Perth. Both represented Western Australia
in the individual event for under 11's. Erin had an amazing
tournament and finished 2nd after a five set grand final. Erin is
now ranked number two for the under 11 girls in Australia and
shows great promise. She also represented WA during in the
team events at the same competition. Dylan played in the
individual event finishing 6th overall in what was a very competitive
age group. Dylan is currently ranked 6th in Australia for his age
group. 2015 should be very exciting for these two young
athletes with competitions both in Australia and New Zealand.

As you are aware we issue one Year Book per family free of charge. Last year we had a number of
requests for additional Year Books per family for various reasons, but mainly from those families
wishing to send year books to their relatives overseas. The cost of additional year books has been
estimated at between $8 - $10 per book depending on the number of books ordered.
If you are interested in purchasing additional Year Books, please email us on:
[email protected] advising how many additional books you would like.

HOW TO CREATE A GREAT READING CULTURE IN YOUR HOME (Part 2)
Last term we gave some suggestions from Jackie French as to how to keep your child motivated to read, here are a few
more as provided by the Australian Children’s Laureate for 2014/5:
Once a week:
Visit the local library together and hunt for books you might like to read. (You don’t have to read them
all!)
Every weekend: Share what you’re reading with your kids. Share an item in a newspaper or magazine, a text from a
friend, or an online article.
Every weekend: Find a new way to share a book or a poem or a story. Get grandma to skype reading a story. Blu -tack up
a poem on the fridge. Read the dog a bedtime story. Tell your kids a funny story about your childhood, or
their grandparents.
Every week:
Lend a friend a book you love. (Don’t forget to put your name in the cover if you want it back.)
Every month:
Give a book (a second hand one you no longer want, or a new one) to a charity, school class or library.
SEE THE GREAT BOOK SWAP for another suggestion of our own!
The Great Book Swap is taking place on
4th December at our school!
What is it?
The Great Book Swap is a fundraising event where you bring along one of your favourite
books (that you can bear to part with) and for a gold coin donation you can swap it for
someone else's.
Who will participate?
If you are in Years 4, 5 or 6 then you are invited to take part.
What is it for?
All the funds raised will go to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
What do they do?
They raise literacy awareness and funds for children in remote Indigenous communities
across Australia. (See indigenousliteracyfoundation.org.au for more detail)
So let’s have fun at the end of term and also help a really good cause!
Remember to put aside the book you would like to swap, so you’re ready when this event
happens in week 8 this term!
Curriculum
What Do Effective Learners Do?
As staff we have been exploring the behavior that is visible in an effective learner. These are some of
the descriptions we came up with:
Displaying perseverance / persistence
Having good listening skills
Taking the opinions of others into consideration
Demonstrating what has been learnt
Showing an aptitude for interpreting knowledge acquired
Showing a keen interest in learning
Showing a positive attitude to learning
Being a reflective learner
Making connections to prior knowledge
Solving problems creatively
Having an enquiring mind
Showing an aptitude for interpreting knowledge acquired
Engaged & interested in the learning activities
Being prepared to have a go & take a risk
Working out what their next step in learning is
Applying knowledge learnt using different learning styles
Being a team player
Demonstrating what has been learnt
Showing an aptitude for interpreting knowledge acquired
Being attentive & focused when being taught
Working cooperatively with others
We have observed many of these in our students as you will have noticed when you read through your
child’s portfolio at the end of last term.
Kind regards,
Cathy Baldry

Active After School Community Program:
The AASC Program has kicked off for Term 4. Students are rotating through different activities during each
session experiencing multiple sports in the one session.
As mentioned previously, the AASC format is in the process of change for next year with the funding of the
program changing. We are contemplating some ideas but I would like to receive your ideas too. Please place
any suggestions on how to keep the students at QBC active after school in the box in Student Services.
Inter-School Athletics
This Friday sees the QBC Athletic team try to defend
their title at the Invitational Athletics Carnival. The
team has been training hard throughout last term
and the first two weeks of this term, preparing
themselves to do their best.
On Friday, 31st October, a smaller team will be
competing in the inaugural Athletics Team
Challenge where teams of four students (one each
from Year 3-6) compete in four individual events
and a shuttle relay earning points for their team
based upon their performances.
Slip, Slop, Slap, Slide, Seek
With the weather heating up, just a reminder to all to adopt the Cancer Council recommendations at school
and at home.
SLIP on a shirt (goes without saying anything more!)
SLOP on sunscreen (there is sunscreen in each classroom)
SLAP on a hat (No hat, no play at recess and lunch)
SLIDE on sunglasses (Sunglasses are allowed to be worn at school
during outside play)
SEEK shade (don’t stay out in the sun if it’s too hot!)
Can all students also bring water bottles to sport
lessons !!!
Community Noticeboard
# 7: Game Winners & Losers
When you play games with your kids, are you a winner or a loser?
As parents, we often play board games with our kids. We usually fall into two groups — those who let
their children win and those who don’t. Parents who are very competitive, which includes most dads,
love to win. Victory is essential — but there are other parents who will bend the rules a bit to enable
their kids to win. So what’s best for our kids?
Actually, when kids play games, they need to learn how to play fairly and be gracious losers. They
don’t learn these lessons if you let them win every time. So go ahead and make them beat you. Of
course, don’t gloat when you win. Help your child during the game and teach them strategies for
victory. Making them learn how to follow the rules and defeat you fairly will not only create stronger
players, but give them a real sense of accomplishment when they finally whip you.

The School Traffic Committee at Peter
Moyes Anglican School is seeking expressions of
interest from QBC parents who would like to
join the committee in making the roads safer around both schools.
Along with the Department of Transport, there are some new
initiatives that they would like to try in the area and would love the
input from QBC parents.
Please contact Mr Stolp if you are interested in joining the committee
or would like further information.

Each year the City of Wanneroo conducts the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal to

There will be a donations box in the Student Office, should you be willing to
join us in supporting this worthy cause, as all donations received will be
distributed to those less fortunate within our community.
The city council will start collecting bins the week beginning
11th November so any items received before this will be much
appreciated. The Appeals closes on Friday, 14th November
