What a wonderful day this is going to be! With over 60,000 people attending last year, we know you will enjoy the added features to this fall tradition. Take your time and roam the grounds. With over 400 arts and craft vendors present this year, there will certainly be something delightful to purchase—as a Christmas present, birthday gift or a “just because” for you! Did you know that many of our vendors have been with us for years and often register for the next year before leaving? On the way to the new and expanded Food Court & Entertainment area behind the Lawton School we have our expanded “Kids’ Area” where your children can enjoy such activities as playing on the gym sets and making their own “Snow Cone”. And, when you become hungry, continue walking back to the Food Court Area, select something to eat from our variety of food vendors, sit under the covered pavilion and enjoy the music from our main stage area. Anything from jazz to rock and roll will be offered. Our Woman’s Club ladies will be manning a drink booth nearby so you can enjoy a cold drink and our Juniorettes will be walking around offering cold soda and water from a cooler. What would our Great Day in the Country be without our annual Student Art Fest? Visual arts from our local art students will be on display and the awards of $2,200 will be presented at our main stage during Opening Ceremonies beginning at 10 am. Why do we offer Great Day in the Country Arts & Crafts Festival every year? Because it is our major fundraiser and all proceeds are given back to this community. Over the past decade, we have awarded over $545,000 through scholarships to high school students and school grants for projects and programs with inadequate funding. The grants we offer to our charitable organizations focus on groups helping those in our community who are struggling. We also offer financial assistance and support to our neighbors who have had a sudden catastrophe or illness. Our members volunteer thousands of hours every year in our community with love, compassion and enthusiasm for the work they do. Sewing blankets for children who need surgery and making and serving meals at Ronald McDonald House are just two of our many endeavors. The GFWC Oviedo Woman’s Club members are truly a family brought together by a mutual desire to help make our community be a better place to live. We hope you enjoy yourself and look forward to seeing you along the way! Count the ladies you encounter in red and white striped shirts---each one represents a GFWC Oviedo Woman’s Club member who helped to make your day a Great One! Thank you for attending our Festival and supporting the GFWC Oviedo Woman’s Club. In addition to beautiful cakes, there will be breads, pies and cookies. For the first time this year, our ladies will offer “single serving” items so you can enjoy a goodie with a cup of coffee or other drink, while relaxing at one of the picnic tables located under the shade of a huge oak tree. While visiting our Country Store Café, please stop by our Community Service booths to see other organizations and learn about what they offer our community. SPONSORED BY BEAN SOUP STARTS WITH A SECRET RECIPE!!!! In the 1970s, Louise Martin, one of the Oviedo Woman’s Club members, had an idea to create a “secret” recipe for bean soup and sell it at the Great Day in the Country Arts & Crafts Festival. After trying several different combinations, Louise yelled, “EUREKA!” as she had found the right formula of spices and the recipe was to her liking. A combination of several different spices made this soup a winner! Because the recipe was Louise’s secret, it was quite an honor to be selected to “mix the various spices and beans” that would then be sold in bags at the Bean Soup booth. That was in the ‘70s. Today, at Great Day in the Country, we sell over 1,800 bags of our bean soup! Just before Great Day, the Bean Soup Committee puts out a “Call to Arms” to all of our members to come and mix the spices, combine the beans and add the “secret” recipe into the bags to sell. This year, in an effort to always provide our patrons with something new, we are offering decorated mason jars filled with our bean soup recipe. Can you think of a better hostess gift for Fall than a small mason jar topped with a Pumpkin or Sunflower? How about a mason jar with a Christmas Stocking Cap or Snowman as a stocking stuffer or teacher gift at Christmas? These tops are all handmade by our Arts Committee Chairman. With the holidays coming up we know one or more of them will catch your eye. Too cute to pass up! Visit our Bean Soup booth located in the new Country Store Café near the Lawton House! The Art Work is on view at the Lawton Elementary School cafeteria. Awards are announced and presented during our opening ceremonies at the main stage. Since 1994, over $26,000 in art scholarships have been awarded to deserving Senior Art Students. There will be student artwork from Carillon, Evans, Geneva, Lawton, Partin, Stenstrom and Walker Elementary Schools, Jackson Heights and Lawton Chiles Middle Schools and Hagerty and Oviedo High Schools. Come on over to the Lawton Elementary School cafeteria and view the submitted art work. Our partners and sponsors for the Student Art Fest are long standing. Each of the sponsors is committed to the future of our young art students and the GFWC Oviedo Woman’s Club is privileged to call them “partners.” Commissioner Bob Dallari sponsors two scholarship awards for graduating high school art student applicants from Oviedo High School and Hagerty High School. Oviedo Mayor Dominic Persampiere sponsors a $50 award to each participating school for the art department. Oviedo Mower & Garden Center sponsors the High School artwork displayed at Great Day in the Country: 1st place $200, 2nd place $100, and 3rd place $50. The Garden Center also sponsors the 3rd place art scholarship award. Seminole Cultural Arts Council, in the past, has sponsored the Award ribbons. But this year they are donating $500 toward a scholarship. The Law Office of Timothy A. Moran sponsors the Student Art Fest participation ribbons and programs. A big “Thank you” goes to these sponsors for their kind donation to the art students in our community. Please take a minute to view the work of these talented young artists in our community this year at our 20th Annual Student Art Fest during Great Day in the Country. JUDGES Del Seaman Del is a third generation artist in his family. He won his first award in art in 1952 and took it to the top of the art community with his late wife, Barbara, who passed away in 2008. After graduating from FSU in 1969, he taught art at Colonial High School, Lee Middle School, Seminole Community College, Valencia Community College, and Crealde School of Art. When The Artistic Hand opened in 1990 he co-taught with Barbara Walker-Seaman and today he still teaches two of the teen/adult clay classes and employs many incredibly talented teachers for the other children, teen, and adult classes. He is a true believer and living proof that having “Art In Your Heart,” will keep your mind sharp, your body young, and your soul filled with love, peace, and the joy of living every day to its fullest. Del’s main goal is to give back to the clay community which has given him so much in his life. 10 Great Day in the Country Julie Harbers Julie earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in ceramics from UCF in 2013. Ms. Townsend was a recipient of the 2009 Seminole Regional Chamber of Commerce Professional Women’s Award for Art and Culture and the 2013 recipient of the Service to Mankind Award from the South Seminole Sertoma. Dr. Saulius Jankauskas Saulius Jankauskas, M.D. is an aesthetic and reconstructive Plastic Surgeon. He has been working exclusively with hot glass since 1996. While using a variety of glass and enamels, the majority of his work uses “recycled” or found glass such as windows, doors, table tops and the like. He believes that glass evokes varied and contradictory feelings. It interestingly plays with the light and water – is warm and cold, smooth and soft and at the same time, hard, sharp and dangerous. His pieces are influenced by poetry, religion and beauty. Dr. Jankauskas has shown in many galleries in Central Florida and Chicago. His pieces are both in private and public collections. Margot Clark Margot Clark has been in the art field in various capacities for the past thirty years. She is a published author in both the glass and painting industries, has written two books on painting techniques and has been included in many more, including books from the National Museum of Decorative Painting in Atlanta, Georgia, which also houses some of her art work as part of the museum’s permanent collection. Margot’s particular techniques are shaded wash, contemporary multi-load and mud texture painting. She has lived outside the United States in Bermuda and Italy, taught art in those countries and in the US, Canada and Europe and continues to teach both glass and painting conventions. The Woman’s Club produces this fall festival which attracts over 60,000 people and 400 vendors. The Festival is one of the largest privately-hosted events in Central Florida. In the past decade, the club has raised over $545,000 to help our community. The GFWC Oviedo Woman’s Club, founded in 1906, presents the annual Great Day in the Country to promote the arts and to fund many community organizations, charities and projects. Each year the local schools benefit from this event by receiving more than $10,000 for programs that cannot be funded through their school budgets. For the past few years, the Woman’s Club has focused on organizations that help women, families, children and senior citizens. Scholarship recipients include graduating boys and girls from the local high schools and recipients from previous years who are continuing their education and women returning to school. Listed below are many of those who benefited from the proceeds from Great Day in the Country. Thank you to everyone who attended and to those who donated their services.
