October 26, 2014 + REFORMATION SUNDAY
INTRODUCTION to the Day
On this day we celebrate the heart of our faith: the gospel of Christ that makes us free! We give
thanks for the sixteenth-century Reformation that brought renewal to the church. We also pray
that the Holy Spirit continues to unite the church in its witness to the world. In the waters of
baptism we are one body and pray for the day when all Christians are one at the Lord's table.
On this Reformation Sunday we remember Philipp Nicolai, Johann Heermann, Paul Gerhardt;
hymn writers in 17th century Germany. Nicolai, a pastor, lost 1,300 parishioners to plague, 170 in
one week. Heermann's hymns often express the emotions of faith. Gerhardt, perhaps the
greatest Lutheran hymnwriter, was a pastor in Berlin.
This is our Order of Worship. The community's Responses are printed in BOLD italics.
Restrooms are down the hall to the right. Please turn off cell phones while in the sanctuary.

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS
+The assembly faces the font. All may make the sign of the cross.+
Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, the Sovereign over all the earth, the Wisdom from on
high, our merciful Judge and Savior. Amen.
Let us boldly approach the throne of grace, trusting in God's mercy and love.
+Silence for reflection.+
Generous and faithful God, we confess to you all the ways we reject your steadfast love.
Though you made us your people, we treat strangers with suspicion.
Though you forgave our debts, we collect without mercy.
Though you offer us the freedom of forgiveness, we are quick to pass judgment on others.
Have mercy on us. Remember your promise to us, for the sake of Christ our Lord. Amen.
The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. Through the
living Word, + Jesus Christ, God forgives your every debt, your every sin, and gives you a new
heart and a new spirit. Amen.

+WORD+
FIRST READING: Jeremiah 31:31–34
The renewed covenant will not be breakable, but like the old covenant it will expect the people
to live upright lives. To know the Lord means that one will defend the poor and needy. The
renewed covenant is possible because the Lord forgives iniquity and will not remember sin.
31The
days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of
Israel and the house of Judah. 32It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors
when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt — a covenant that they
broke, though I was their husband, says the LORD. 33But this is the covenant that I will make with
the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write
it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34No longer shall they
teach one another, or say to each other, "Know the LORD," for they shall all know me, from the
least of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their
sin no more.
PSALM (ELW): Psalm 46
1God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
2Therefore
we will not fear, though the earth be moved,
and though the mountains shake in the depths of the sea;
3though
its waters rage and foam,
and though the mountains tremble with its tumult.
4There
5God
is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy habitation of the Most High.
is in the midst of the city; it shall not be shaken;
God shall help it at the break of day.
6The
nations rage, and the kingdoms shake;
7The
LORD of hosts is with us;
God speaks, and the earth melts away.
the God of Jacob is our stronghold.
8Come
now, regard the works of the LORD,
what desolations God has brought upon the earth;
9behold
the one who makes war to cease in all the world;
who breaks the bow, and shatters the spear, and burns the shields with fire.
10"Be
still, then, and know that I am God;
11The
LORD of hosts is with us;
I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth."
the God of Jacob is our stronghold.

SECOND READING: Romans 3:19–28
Paul's words stand at the heart of the preaching of Martin Luther and the other Reformation
leaders. No human beings make themselves right with God through works of the law. We are
brought into a right relationship with God through the divine activity centered in Christ's death.
This act is a gift of grace that liberates us from sin and empowers our faith in Jesus Christ.
19Now
we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that
every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20For "no
human being will be justified in his sight" by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law
comes the knowledge of sin.
21But now, apart from law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested
by the law and the prophets, 22the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who
believe. For there is no distinction, 23since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God;
24they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
25whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He
did this to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins
previously committed; 26it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that
he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus.
27Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works? No, but
by the law of faith. 28For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed
by the law.
The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (Sung)
(Pastor Jim sings the Acclamation the first time. The people join on the second time.)
Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.
If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples,
You will know the truth, the truth will set you free.
Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. (from John 8:31-32)
GOSPEL: John 8:31–36
The holy gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew.
Glory to you, O Lord.
31Then
Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, "If you continue in my word, you are truly
my disciples; 32and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." 33They answered
him, "We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you
mean by saying, 'You will be made free'?"
34Jesus answered them, "Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin.
35The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever.
36So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

THE HYMN LET US TALENTS AND TONGUES EMPLOY ELW 674
THE CONFESSION OF FAITH
God has made us children of the kingdom through Christ's life, death and Resurrection. Living
together in trust and hope we confess our faith.
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen
and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the
Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one
Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came
down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly
human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On
the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is
seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the
dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father
and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken
through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge
one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of
the world to come. Amen.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.
It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks
and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. By the witness of
the saints you show us the hope of our calling, and strengthen us to run the race set before us,
that we may delight in your mercy and rejoice with all the saints in glory.
And so, with Martin Luther, Philipp Nicolai, Johann Heermann, Paul Gerhardt, and all the saints,
with the choirs of angels and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending
hymn: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the
highest. Hosanna in the highest.
THE PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen
into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only
and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you,
the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in
obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and
when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat:
This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and
said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for
many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Therefore let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come
again.
We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and
thanksgiving. Recalling Christ's death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.
Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy
food and drink of new and unending life in him.
Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity,
constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal
kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the
unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.
Hear us, O God, and keep teaching us to pray:
