Session 2: Faculty Lecture Information
School of Arts and Humanities
Lecture Title: “3D Computer Animation: From Entertainment to Research”
Synopsis: This lecture will provide an introduction and overview of the 3D animation process and animation-related courses taught in
the Arts and Technology (ATEC) program. Examples of student work will be presented as will examples of professional work by ATEC
faculty members.
Speaker Bio: Dr. Eric Farrar is an assistant professor of arts and technology (ATEC) at The University of Texas at Dallas. He holds an
MFA in Computer Animation and Visualization from Ohio State University through the Advanced Computing Center for Art and Design.
Eric has worked as a character rigger at Rhythm & Hues, where he worked on a number of feature films and commercial animation
projects. He currently teaches courses in 3D animation at UT Dallas including courses specializing in character rigging, as well as a
year-long animation production course in which a team of students completes an animated short from concept to completion.
School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences
Lecture Title: “Investigating the Pathophysiology of Migraine Using Preclinical Laboratory Models”
Synopsis: Migraine is the most common neurological disorder, affecting approximately 12 percent of the U.S. population. Currently
available therapies are at best only partially effective. Development of new therapies has been slow due in large part to a poor
understanding of the underlying pathology contributing to migraine. Dr. Greg Dussor will give an overview of the clinical features and
prevalence of migraine and will describe the neuroanatomy and neurophysiology that probably contribute to the pain commonly
associated with migraine. He will also discuss the ongoing research in his laboratory at UT Dallas, including the methods used to study
migraine pain pre-clinically as well as some of the novel therapeutic targets identified by his research team.
Speaker Bio: Dr. Greg Dussor received his PhD in pharmacology in 2002 at The University of Texas Health Science Center in San
Antonio, where he worked on peripheral acetylcholine receptors and their contribution to pain signaling. He did postdoctoral training from
2004 to 2007 at the Vollum Institute on the campus of The Oregon Health and Science University in Portland. There, he worked on
biophysical properties of acid-sensing ion channels and also characterized the ion channel expression on a population of sensory
neurons that innervate the outer epidermis. In 2007, he joined the Faculty in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of
Arizona in Tucson. While in Arizona, he shifted the focus of his laboratory to understanding the pathophysiology contributing to chronic
headache disorders such as migraine. He remained on the faculty there until joining the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences in
2014. He was a recipient of a Future Leaders in Pain Research Award from the American Pain Society, and he has received funding
from the National Institutes of Health, the American Pain Society, the National Headache Foundation and the Migraine Research
Foundation.
Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science
Lecture Title: “Automated Reasoning from Ancient to Modern Times”
Synopsis: This lecture will provide an overview of automated reasoning – one of the technologies behind artificial intelligence. We will
explore its roots in logic, mathematics and automated theorem proving, and its role in modern question-answering systems such as
IBM’s “Watson,” which won the Jeopardy quiz show.
Speaker Bio: Dr. Gopal Gupta is a professor and head of the Department of Computer Science at UT Dallas, where he holds the Erik
Jonsson Chair. He received his bachelor of science in computer science from IIT Kanpur, India, and his PhD in computer science from
UNC Chapel Hill. His research interests are in automated reasoning, computational logic and programming languages. His research has
been funded by various federal agencies, including the National Science Foundation, and has been the basis of two technology
companies.

Session 2: Faculty Lecture Information (cont’d)
School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences
Lecture Title: “Survivor: The Somewhat Believable Tale of My 25 Years in the White House”
Synopsis: Dr. Donald Arbuckle will talk about his 25 years working in the White House before coming to UT Dallas in 2006. As a senior
civil servant, he served Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush and is intimately familiar with
the internal workings of the government. He worked on a daily basis with senior White House, agency and congressional officials. He
was awarded the Distinguished Service Award, the highest award given by his office, as well as a Presidential Executive Service Award,
one of the highest honors given to federal career executives.
Speaker Bio: Dr. Arbuckle teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in public policy, as well as a course during the
summer for the Texas Archer Fellowship Internship Program in Washington, D.C. He has won awards in the School of
Economic, Political and Policy Sciences the past two years for his teaching.
School of Interdisciplinary Studies
Lecture Title: “Preparation for Healthcare: The B.S. Degree in Healthcare Studies”
Synopsis: The lecture provides an overview of the bachelor of science degree in healthcare studies, which prepares pre-health
students who want to pursue careers in healthcare fields such as medicine, pharmacy, optometry, dentistry, physical therapy and
physician assisting. The degree prepares students for future training as well as employment in the U.S. healthcare industry.
Speaker Bio: Dr. Kathleen Byrnes is program head of Healthcare Studies in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies. She has a PhD in
Healthcare Studies from Texas Woman’s University. Dr. Byrnes is also a licensed professional counselor and has spent 20 years
working in healthcare administration as well as working with patients and families in a variety of healthcare settings.
Naveen Jindal School of Management
Lecture Title: “What Is Consumer Behavior and Why Should I Care?”
Synopsis: Want to influence someone to buy the new app you just developed or to save water in your community? Then, stop by this
mini consumer behavior session to better understand the purchases and choices that consumers make and learn some new strategies
for influencing those choices.
Speaker Bio: Julie Haworth is the director of the Bachelor of Science in Marketing Program. She teaches Principles of Marketing,
Consumer Behavior and Product and Brand Management. She also enjoys her role as faculty advisor for the student chapter of the
American Marketing Association. In addition, she serves as the lead for the Undergraduate Marketing Advisory Board with members
ranging from the Richards Group to the Dallas Cowboys. Prior to teaching, she held marketing positions at Procter and Gamble,
Maybelline and Mary Kay. Ms. Haworth earned her undergraduate degree in journalism / public relations from Southern Methodist
University and completed her MBA at the University of Texas at Austin. She is currently a PhD candidate in public affairs at UT Dallas,
where she is researching water conservation behavior in Plano.
School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics
Lecture Title: “RNA Editing: Gene Expression Outside the Central Dogma of Molecular Biology”
Synopsis: The Central Dogma of Molecular Biology holds that genetic information is resident in genes on DNA, is maintained through
DNA replication, is transferred through transcription to mRNA, and is expressed as a protein with a specific function through translation.
Dr. Dennis Miller’s laboratory has discovered an exception to the Central Dogma of Molecular Biology called RNA editing in
mitochondria of Physarum polycephalum, an acellular slime mold. Dr. Miller will discuss the discovery of this type of RNA editing, the
mechanism of this novel form of gene expression, and how this knowledge might be used to treat mitochondrial diseases and slow the
aging process.
.
Speaker Bio: Dr. Dennis Miller is associate professor of cell and molecular biology at The University of Texas at Dallas. He earned his
PhD in biochemistry at the University of Iowa and was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at
Dallas. He came to The University of Texas at Dallas in 1983. He is currently the associate dean of undergraduate education for the
School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and teaches molecular genetics and gene expression to graduate and undergraduate
students.
