SIBELIUS ACADEMY`S ADMISSION PROPOSAL 2015

Dnr. Siba/258/5.52.00/2014
3rd of June 2015, Helsinki
SIBELIUS ACADEMY’S ADMISSION PROPOSAL 2015
(unofficial translation)
All University of the Arts Helsinki’s programmes are conducted in the national Joint Application to higher
education. Applicants have been able to apply for a maximum of six programmes in the Joint Application,
and they were to set the programmes in an order of preference. The order is binding. Applicant can be
accepted as a student to only one programme in Joint Application. If an applicant could be accepted as a
student to more than one programme, he/she will only be accepted to the programme that is highest on
the priority list. All universities and polytechnics are to do their admissions proposals during June and the
national results of Joint Application should be ready by 3 July 2015. Final results can then be checked on
Studyinfo’s My Studyinfo -service. All applicants will also receive then a national result letter with
instructions for appealing. An applicant can see the national results on Studyinfo before 3 July if the results
of all programmes he/she has applied to have been saved on the system before that.
If you have prioritized another Finnish university or polytechnic higher on the list and you are accepted to
the school in question, you cannot be admitted to Sibelius Academy and you cannot confirm your study
place even if your name appears on the admission proposal. If you have prioritized Sibelius Academy’s
programme highest on the list, the results are already clear for you and you are admitted to Sibelius
Academy.
Based on the applications and the results of the entrance examinations 2015, the Dean and the 1st Vice
Dean of Sibelius Academy have decided that the below-mentioned applicants could be accepted as

CONDITIONAL ACCEPTANCE
Based on Sibelius Academy’s Admissions Guide 2015, you are eligible for education leading to both a lower
and a higher university degree in the following situations:
1. You have passed the Finnish matriculation examination referred to in the National matriculation
examination act (672/2005);
2. You have been awarded vocational qualification upon completion of at least three years of education or
corresponding prior studies;
3. You have a vocational upper secondary qualification, a further vocational qualification, or a specialist
vocational qualification defined in the vocational adult education and training act (631/1998) or a
corresponding prior qualification; or
4. You have a foreign degree or qualification that makes you eligible for higher education in the awarding
country.
You can be deemed as eligible also if the Academy otherwise deems you to have sufficient knowledge and
skills for the studies. (The Universities Act, Section 37).
Based on Sibelius Academy’s Admissions Guide 2015, you are eligible for education leading only to the
higher university degree if you have completed one of the following:
1) an applicable lower university degree;
2) an applicable polytechnic degree; or
3) an applicable education completed abroad which in the awarding country gives eligibility for
corresponding higher education.
For Sibelius Academy, an applicable qualification is a qualification in music. The following exceptions to this
rule apply:
 In the case of Music Education, a degree in education may also be considered an applicable degree
if the applicant has also completed enough studies in music. As part of his or her degree or as
supplementary studies, the applicant must have completed pedagogical teaching courses (worth at
least 60 ECTS credits/35 credit units), as referred to in the Decree on the Qualification
Requirements for Teaching Personnel, or he or she must have gained access to a pedagogical
teaching programme at a university or a university of applied sciences/polytechnic.
 In the case of Arts Management, a higher education degree in another field may also be applicable
if the Selection Board is convinced that you have acquired sufficient knowledge of the arts field
through your university-level studies or work experience.
 In the case of Music Technology, a higher education degree in the field of technology or media may
also be applicable if you have acquired a sufficient, verifiable education in music.
To be considered eligible, conditionally accepted applicants must provide Sibelius Academy Admission
Office with a certificate of completed degree or education no later than 15.7.2015 at 3 p.m. Finnish time.
The copy of the certificate must be either in Finnish, Swedish or English. If the applicant has completed an
education outside of Finland, he or she must append a clarification of the educational system in the country
in question and the level of completed education in this system. The clarification must be in Finnish,
Swedish, or English. The certificates and clarifications must arrive to Sibelius Academy before the deadline.
A conditionally accepted applicant who fails to produce the required documents before the deadline will
lose his/her conditional study place in Sibelius Academy.
CONFIRMING THE STUDY PLACE
In order to confirm the study place, all applicants must accept the place no later than on Friday 17.7.2015
at 3 p.m. Finnish time. Confirming a study place is to be done primarily electronically via Studyinfo.fi
service (www.studyinfo.fi). If the applicant cannot accept the study place electronically, he/she must fill in
11
the study place acceptance form and post or e-mail it to the University of the Arts Helsinki Admissions
Office by 17.7.2015 at 3 p.m. Finnish time at the latest. The address is: University of the Arts Helsinki
Admissions Office (SibA summer office at the Music Centre), P.O. Box 38, FI-00097 UNIARTS or
[email protected].
If the applicant does not accept his/her study place before the deadline, he/she will lose it. (The
Universities Act, Section 38)
FEEDBACK ON THE ENTRANCE EXAMINATIONS
All applicants are entitled to receive information on how the selection criteria has been applied in their
particular case. Feedback is given by the contact persons listed on the University of the Arts Helsinki’s
website: http://www.uniarts.fi/en/admissions/siba.
HOW TO APPEAL
An applicant dissatisfied with the decision can lodge a complaint within fourteen (14) days of the
announcement (Universities Act, section 82, paragraph 1). The appeal is to be addressed to the academy in
question in writing and it must be submitted to the University of the Arts Helsinki Registry by hand, e-mail,
or regular mail. The appeal must arrive to the Registry no later than 3 p.m. on 17th of July 2015. The sender
