Take a trip to Haikankärki on the island
of Summassaari. A walk along the Haikankärki nature trail gives you a taste of
the breathtaking scenery Saarijärvi has to
offer. The trail takes you to the top of a
high ridge where you will be surrounded
by pine trees and the lakes below.

The young Johan Ludvig Runeberg
needed money to fund his studies. In
1823, he took up a post as a home
tutor at the Kolkanlahti farm in
Saarijärvi. Johan was far away from
home, but during his time in Saarijärvi
he discovered a traditional Finnish
way of living that would later become
a major influence on his poetry. The
main building of the farm today houses
the Gentry Home Museum. The first
floor of the building features Runeberg’s
bedroom and an exhibition on the life
and work of the national poet.
Fishing and hunting
The best locations for fishing are the
lakes Summanen, Pyhäjärvi, IsoLöytänä, Karankajärvi, Ylä-Viivajärvi,
and Kivijärvi. The Saarijärvi region
offers more than 100,000 hectares of
woodland suitable for hunting grouse
and wild ducks, for example.
In the Stone Age village, you and your
family can travel 5,000 years back in
time. See Stone Age tools and explore
prehistoric dwellings from around the
world. You can even try your hand at
paddling an ancient boat or using a stone
axe. On the history and nature trail, you
will see ancient earthworks and structures, including trapping pits.
Kulhanvuori hill and
Syväoja gorge
Feel the goosebumps! In the Kulha Nature
Reserve, you can climb the Kulhanvuori
hill, one of the highest points in Central
Finland, and hike in the mystical Syväoja
gorge. The vertical walls of the gorge rise
to the height of tree tops, and they can
remain covered with ice well into the
summer months. There is a 3.5 km hiking
trail in the area.

National Park
Finland ranks sixth in the world for the
number of marshes and bogs. Fall in love
with marshland – its calming silence
and unique aroma – in the Salamajärvi
National Park. There are several trails to
choose from, ranging from 2.5 to 58 km
in length and forming part of the Peuran
polku trail. Anglers will be pleased to hear
that the national park is renowned for trout
that can be caught in the lake Koirajärvi.

JUHOLA – THE CHILDHOOD

Saarijärvi is one of the oldest inhabited places in Finland. Visit a Stone Age
village and find out what life was like
in prehistoric Finland! J. L. Runeberg,
the national poet of Finland, lived in
Saarijärvi in the 1820s. The people of
Saarijärvi have always loved culture.
You can pack your holiday with art,
theatre, and dance.
Pine trees are without doubt a major
feature of Saarijärvi; So come and find
your favourite pine! Go hiking in the
Pyhä-Häkki National Park where you
will be surrounded by 400-year-old
pines. The largest pine tree in the park
lived in 1518–2004, and the silvery snag
will stand for a long time. The tree is 26
m tall and has a circumference of 288
cm. The park has 3 km and 6 km hiking
trails, and it is also part of the Central
Finland Provincial Trail.
Saarijärvi
White-Water Route
Rumbling rapids, calm rivers, beautiful
lakes, and idyllic landscapes. The 82 km
Kyyjärvi–Karstula–Pylkönmäki–Saarijärvi
white-water route offers all this. The scenic route is easy to navigate and suits both
beginners and experienced canoeists. It is
the longest route of its kind in Southern
Finland and includes 22 rapids that span
nearly seven kilometres in total. You can
also continue straight to the Seven Lakes
Canoeing Route.

In the summer months, you can enjoy a
game of disc golf on a 20-hole national
championship level course.

Nature Reserve
Explore an enchanting hill landscape
of rocky shores, calm lakes, countless
islands, spectacular cliff faces, and giant
aspens. The Kalajanvuori trail (2.5 km
one way) provides an excellent way to
experience the unique lake landscape.
The young Runeberg loved exploring the
local woods. The Julmat Lammit area
was one of his inspirations. Experience
the gorge lakes, cliffs, and woods that inspired the national poet! The three-kilometre trail has a campfire site, viewing
platform, and swimming beach. The
trail forms part of the 12 km Runeberg
nature trail, which includes a spring that
provides drinking water.

traditional herb garden, flower bed, and

At Kusiaismäki, you can try alpine and
cross-country skiing, snowboarding,
and sleighing, conveniently at the same
location.
Kusiaismäki ski resort offers 15 km of
cross-country skiing trails. The firstsnow trail is open from early autumn.
Paavonrinteet ski resort includes five
floodlit pistes.
