Below are listed 20 of my articles for review with comments on their scientific impact.
1. Jääskeläinen SK, Peltola JK: Clinical application of the blink reflex with stimulation of the
mental nerve in lesions of the inferior alveolar nerve., Neurology 1994;44:2356-2361. (IF
8.303) The first systematic neurophysiologic study on the use of blink reflex with mental
nerve stimulation in the diagnosis of inferior alveolar nerve lesions that are the most
frequent iatrogenic nerve injuries in the field of oral surgery and dentistry. Mental nerve
blink reflex offered the first objective measure for iatrogenic inferior alveolar nerve injuries
that are a major cause of litigation in the field of dentistry and oral surgery. (Number of
citations 21)
2. Jääskeläinen SK, Forssell H, Tenovuo O: Abnormalities of the blink reflex in burning mouth
syndrome. Pain 1997;73:455-460 (IF 5.836) First ever systematic neurophysiologic study on
burning mouth syndrome. Revealed neurophysiologic signs indicative of neuropathic
dysfunction both at the peripheral and the central levels of the trigeminal system, and
deficient dopaminergic inhibition. . (Number of citations 102)
3. Jääskeläinen SK, Forssell H, Tenovuo O: Electrophysiological testing of the trigeminofacial
system: aid in the diagnosis of atypical facial pain. Pain 1999;80: 191-200. (IF 5.836) First
ever systematic neurophysiologic study on atypical facial pain. Similarly to burning mouth
syndrome, neurophysiologic signs indicative of neuropathic dysfunction both at the
peripheral and the central levels of the trigeminal system, and deficient dopaminergic
inhibition were found, first time highlighting the neuropathic nature of this pain condition.
Since then, more evidence has been gathered for neuropathic aetiology of persistent
idiopathic facial pain in studies by my group and others. (Number of citations 47)
4. Jääskeläinen SK: A new technique for recording the sensory conduction velocity of the
inferior alveolar nerve. Muscle Nerve 1999;22:455-459. (IF 2.311) Describes the
development of a new technique for direct measurement of the function of the inferior
alveolar nerve; previously there were no objective recording techniques available for
reliable and sensitive evaluation of the peripheral sensory branch of the mandibular nerve
that is often injured during various dental procedures. (Number of citations 20)
5. Jääskeläinen SK, Teerijoki-Oksa T, Forssell K, Vähätalo K, Peltola J, Forssell H:
Intraoperative monitoring of the inferior alveolar nerve during mandibular sagittal split
osteotomy. Muscle Nerve 2000;23:368-375. (IF 2.311) Describes a new intraoperative
monitoring technique to prevent iatrogenic inferior alveolar nerve lesions during
orthognathic surgery of the mandible. Has led to a modification of the operation technique
that is less traumatic to the neurovascular bundle, and decreased the incidence of these
iatrogenic neuropathies in our hospital. (Number of citations 29)
6. Jääskeläinen SK, Rinne JO, Forssell H, Tenovuo O, Kaasinen V, Sonninen P, Bergman J:
Role of the dopaminergic system in chronic pain – a fluorodopa-PET study. Pain
2001;90:257-260. (IF 5.836) The first ever published article on the role of the striatal
dopaminergic system in human pain. Has led to the ongoing research-line on the
dopaminergic modulation of experimental and clinical human pain. (Number of citations
122)
7. Forssell H*, Jääskeläinen S*, Tenovuo O, Hinkka S: Sensory dysfunction in burning mouth
syndrome. Pain 2002;99:41-47. (IF 5.836) Further confirmation, in a large group of
patients, of the central role of multi-level nervous system dysfunction in burning mouth
syndrome pain. Much cited and respected article on neurophysiologic alterations in primary
BMS confirming the neuropathic nature of the pain condition. (Number of citations 137)
*both authors contributed equally to the article
8. Teerijoki-Oksa T, Jääskeläinen SK*, Forssell K, Forssell H, Vähätalo K, Tammisalo T,
Virtanen A: Risk factors of nerve injury during mandibular sagittal split osteotomy. Int J
Oral Maxillofac Surg 2002;31:33-39. (IF 1.359) First study reporting with direct evidence
the risk factors of surgical nerve injury during mandibular surgery according to continuous
neurophysiologic intraoperative monitoring of the function of the inferior alveolar nerve.
(Number of citations 54) *Second tutor of the thesis work
9. Teerijoki-Oksa T, Jääskeläinen S*, Forssell K, Virtanen A, Forssell H: An evaluation of
clinical and electrophysiologic tests in nerve injury diagnosis after mandibular sagittal split
osteotomy. Int J Oral Maxillofac Surg 2003;32:15-23. (IF 1.259) The first publication I am
aware of comparing the diagnostic value of several clinical, quantitative sensory and
neurophysiologic tests in the diagnosis of sensory nerve injury in a prospective follow-up
study design that also utilized the data from intraoperative monitoring as the gold standard
of nerve injury. First study highlighting in detail the fact that clinical sensory examination is
a poor diagnostic tool for the diagnosis of traumatic peripheral sensory neuropathy, already
at the acute stage. (Number of citations 63) *Second tutor of the thesis work
10. Hagelberg N, Forssell H, Rinne JO, Scheinin H, Taiminen T, Luutonen S, Någren K,
Jääskeläinen S: Striatal dopamine D1 and D2 receptors in burning mouth syndrome. Pain
2003;101:149-154. (IF 5.836) The first PET study on any clinical pain condition showing an
imbalance of the striatal dopamine D1 and D2 receptor mediated pathways that may
indicate either a decrease in the synaptic endogenous dopamine content or an increase in
D2 receptor density in the putamen of burning mouth patients. Supplies direct evidence for a
deficit in the top-down dopaminergic control in clinical pain that has later been shown to be
of neuropathic origin. (Number of citations 92)
11. Teerijoki-Oksa T, Jääskeläinen SK*, Forssell K, Virtanen A, Forssell H: Recovery of nerve
injury after mandibular sagittal split osteotomy. Diagnostic value of clinical and
electrophysiologic tests in the follow-up. Int J Oral Maxillofac Surg 2004;33:134-140. (IF
1.359) Showed clearly the superiority of clinical neurophysiologic recordings and, to a
slightly lesser degree, quantitative sensory tests in the late diagnosis (after 6 months) and
follow-up of recovery of iatrogenic inferior alveolar nerve injuries. At one year, clinical
sensory tests were able to detect only 7% of the still symptomatic nerve injuries whereas the
combination of neurophysiologic and psychophysical sensory tests was 100% sensitive.
(Number of citations 34) *Second tutor of the thesis work
12. Jääskeläinen SK, Kaisti K, Suni L, Hinkka S, Scheinin H: Sevoflurane is epileptogenic in
healthy subjects at surgical levels of anesthesia. Neurology 2003;61:1073-1078. (IF 8.303)
Part of a larger PET study project on anaesthesia mechanisms. Showed, for the first time,
the systematic, dose-dependent epileptogenic effect of deep sevoflurane anaesthesia in
healthy subjects with no previous personal history of epilepsy. The results indicate that
neurophysiologic EEG recordings are critical in the evaluation of the CNS effects of new
anaesthetics. (Number of citations 64)
13. Hagelberg N, Forssell H, Aalto S, Rinne JO, Scheinin H, Taiminen T, Någren K, Eskola O,
Jääskeläinen SK: Altered dopamine D2 receptor binding in atypical facial pain. Pain
2003;106:43-48. (IF 5.836) The first neurotransmitter PET study on atypical facial pain
patients. Showed similar imbalance of the striatal dopamine D1 and D2 receptor mediated
pathways as we previously found in burning mouth syndrome. The findings may indicate
either a decrease in the synaptic endogenous dopamine content or an increase in D2
receptor density in the putamen. Confirms our previous observations on neurophysiologic
similarities between BMS and AFP pain conditions. (Number of citations 81)
14. Jääskeläinen SK, Teerijoki-Oksa T, Forssell K, Virtanen A, Forssell H: Sensory
regeneration following intraoperatively verified trigeminal nerve injury. Neurology
2004;62:1951-1957. (IF 8.303) The first study reporting the incidence of trigeminal
neuropathic pain after injury, and analysing the neurophysiologic and psychophysical
features relevant for the development of neuropathic trigeminal pain. (Number of citations
49)
15. Valmunen T, Pertovaara A, Virtanen A, Parkkola R, Jääskeläinen SK: Modulation of facial
sensitivity by navigated rTMS in healthy subjects. Pain 2009;142:149-158 (IF 5.836). First
study ever using E-field navigated precision TMS-device to explore the cortical brain
targets that may induce analgesic effects in healthy subjects. For the first time, it could be
shown that the right secondary somatosensory cortex might be a more suitable target to
induce analgesia than the previously used targets at the primary motor cortex and
dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. In addition, the use of signal detection theory based
mathematics enabled dissection of the changes in sensory thresholds to those due to changes
in sensory discriminative capacity and to those due to altered subjective criterion, i.e. nonsensory aspects of psychophysical test results that may be the most important factor in
clinical effects of rTMS. (Number of citations 19)
16. Jääskeläinen SK: Clinical neurophysiology and quantitative sensory testing in the
investigation of orofacial pain and sensory function. J Orofac Pain 2004;18:85-107. (IF

Hietala J, Pertovaara A: Striatal dopamine D2 receptors in modulation of pain in humans: a
review. Eur J Pharmacol 2004;500:187-192. (IF 2.684) An invited, first-ever published and
much cited ( citations per year 6.0) review on the dopaminergic system and human pain.
(Number of citations 88) *Both authors contributed equally to the article
18. Jääskeläinen SK: Pathophysiology of primary burning mouth syndrome. Clin Neurophysiol
2012;123:71-77. (IF 2.979) A recent invited review in the most respected scientific journal
in the small field of clinical neurophysiology on the pathophysiology of burning mouth
syndrome that has been clarified largely based on our thorough and systematic research
done during the last 15 years with refined diagnostic tools, many of which have been
developed in our department of clinical neurophysiology of Turku University. A recent
editorial in Scandinavian Journal of Pain pointed out that our multidisciplinary pain
research group in Turku indeed meets the criteria for a centre of excellence that all
university pain centres should look for inspiration. (Number of citations 31)

20. Jääskeläinen SK, Lindholm P, Valmunen T, Pesonen U, Taiminen T, Virtanen A, Lamusuo
S, Forssell H, Hagelberg N, Hietala J, Pertovaara A. Variation in the dopamine D2 receptor
gene plays a key role in human pain and its modulation by transcranial magnetic
stimulation. Pain 2014;155:2180-2187. (IF 5.386) The first ever direct evidence for the
critical role of striatal dopamine D2 receptors and their genetic determinants as risk factors
of chronic neuropathic pain, modulators of human pain perception, and treatment efficacy
of neuromodulation by transcranial magnetic stimulation. These findings decisively confirm
my early hypothesis (formed in 1997) of the role of brain dopamine system in experimental
as well as clinical pain.
