Assault on North Easterners: TSA-D, NCR condemn
Newmai News Network
IMPHAL, Oct 23: The
Thadou Students’ AssociationDelhi & NCR (TSA-D &
NCR), in the strongest terms,
has condemned the attack on T
Michael Lamjathang Haokip,
26, who sustained injuries on
the head and other two students
Ngamkholen Haokip, 28, and
Rocky Kipgen, 25, who
escaped with minor injuries in
Bangalore.
The incident, which occurred on the night of October
14 in Kothanur in Bangalore,
started when a gang of local
men demanded that Michael
and his friends speak in
Kannada, the local language.
Michael, who is the president
of Thadou Students' Association, Bangalore branch and
his friends Ngamkholen and
Rocky, who are also mem-
bers of the association, hail
from Manipur and are currently studying in Bangalore.
In an interview with
NDTV Michael said, “They
said you are eating Karnataka
food, living in Karnataka. If
you don’t speak Kannada
please get out. We ignored
them, but they took it as an
insult. They picked up stones
and attacked us and I got injured.”
According to Thadou Students' Association (TSA),
Michael ran to the police station to seek police help to
rescue his friend, Letmang
Haokip, who was surrounded
by the gang who robbed
Letmang’s belongings. Had it
not been for Michael’s brave
act and the police intervention, the situation would have
been much worse. Letmang
feared that he would have
probably been killed by the
gang had it not been for the
intervention by the police who
were brought by Michael.
“We laud the police for their
timely action in this incident
and for arresting the three
perpetrators,” said the student
body.
What came as even more
shocking was that the people
who gathered at the scene
immediately sided with the
attackers and joined the attack. It was reported that
people who allegedly have
connection with a local politician helped the attackers
escape.
“The incident is highly
deplorable and we demand
appropriate action against the
perpetrators and all involved
in the attack according to the
law of the land and we also
demand that all needed sup-
port and assistance be extended to the victims of the
crime” said TSA.
“This kind of racially-motivated incident has happened
in the past and this is going
to send a new wave of shock
and fear amongst citizens
from the North Eastern part
of the country who live in
Karnataka and elsewhere. In
light of this it is highly crucial that the Government and
authorities concerned take remedial measures that seek to
prevent recurrence of this
kind of incident, to ensure
safety and security of North
East Indians living in
Karnataka and elsewhere
across the country,” TSA
said.
“We also condemn the recent racially motivated
incidents in Delhi and demand
that justice be delivered in all
cases in a timely and satisfying manner,” it added.
The TSA said, “Considering the frequency of this kind
of incident in the country we
call upon the Central and
State Governments to initiate
more permanent remedial
measures, not just crisis intervention.
A
permanent
remedial measure is enactment of the demanded
anti-racial discrimination law
in the country and dissemination and inclusion of North
East India history and culture
in educational curricula right
from primary education
through to tertiary level in
order to promote unity in the
country. Then only can there
be true and full embracement
of ‘unity in diversity’, which
is the dream of the founders
of the Nation and of millions
of us today”.

Jaipur police has launched a
drive against Bangladeshi
migrants, living here illegally
and under fake names, after
some of them were allegedly
found involved in a dacoity case
recently in posh Vaishali Nagar
locality.
The drive began from
Bhankhrota area here following directions from the
Director General of Police, a
senior official said.
"A door-to-door survey
has been initiated in localities
under Bhankhrota police station area to identify illegal
Bangladeshi migrants, if
found, legal remedy will be
taken," Additional Deputy
Commissioner of Police
(West) Karan Sharma told
PTI today.
Many people in the locality have shown government
identity cards, which would
be verified from the government records to verify
whether they are Bangladeshi
or not, he said.
"They are showing us
identity cards issued from
places like West Bengal,
Madhya Pradesh. We will
check their records from the
concern authority," Sharma
said. It is likely that some of
them might have procured
identity cards like voter ID or
ration card through unfair
means, and if such case
comes to light, role of the
issuing authorities would also
be probed, the Additional
DCP said.
The survey would be conducted throughout the city in

Scientists consider repurposing robots for Ebola
NEW YORK, Oct 23:
Robotics scientists
nationwide are pondering
an intriguing possibility:
Might robotic technologies
deployed in rescue and
disaster situations be
quickly repurposed to help
contain the Ebola epidemic?
A robot that could
perform even some of the
tasks of a human, such
as waste removal or the
burial of bodies, would
have significant lifesaving
potential. So, with the
assistance of the White
House Office of Science
and Technology Policy,
scientists are planning a
series of brainstorming
meetings. The first round
will be held Nov. 7 at
four locations: Worcester
Polytechnic Institute, in
Massachusetts; Texas
A&M; the University of
California, Berkeley; and
in Washington.
The problem, scientists
say, is that the technology
is still limited when it
comes to medicine. While
mobile robots now can
disarm roadside bombs
and drive cars, they are
taking only the first
tentative steps toward the
human levels of dexterity
required in health care.
“You see the situation
that the medical teams
are facing, and I don’t
even know if a robot is a
solution,” said Taskin
Padir, an assistant
professor of robotics
engineering at Worcester
Polytechnic and an
organizer of one of the
meetings.
The White House is
now considering how
robots can help fight
Ebola. A look at the role
three types of robots
could play in combating
the virus. Video by Carrie
Halperin on Publish Date
October 22, 2014.
Still, he has been
considering ways to
repurpose an existing
robot project as a tool for
more safely performing
decontamination tasks,
like spraying bleach
solution on clothing
exposed to infected body
fluids.
“As was the case in
Fukushima, the Ebola
crisis in Africa has
revealed a significant gap
between robot capabilities
and what is needed in the
realm of disaster relief
and humanitarian
assistance,” said Gill A.
Pratt, a roboticist who is
a program manager at
the federal Defense
Advanced Research
Projects Agency. “We
have a moral obligation to
try and select, adapt and
apply available technology
where it can help, but we
must also appreciate the
difficulty of the problem.”
Many of the countries
experiencing the worst of
the Ebola epidemic are in
no position to deploy
robots. But rudimentary
models are widely used in
medical settings in the
United States, and
already nervous hospital
administrators are
reaching out to manufacturers.
The phone has been
ringing continually in
recent weeks, said Yulun
Wang, the chief executive
of InTouch Health, a
Santa Barbara, Calif.based maker of
telepresence robots used
in hospitals for stroke
diagnosis and other
medical tasks.
Clients like Robert
Wood Johnson University
Hospital and Baylor
University Hospital are
asking whether the robots
can be used to help
diagnose Ebola infection,
without a human present,
or to facilitate virtual
family visits for patients
in isolation.
“They acquired our
solutions for a very
different purpose, and
now they are wondering
whether they are applicable for Ebola care,” Mr.
Wang said.
The company makes a
robot that travels around
hospital corridors, guided
by a physician at a
remote location who
“sees” via an Internetconnected device.
Normally used to observe
patients with the aid of
high-quality video and
audio, the robots could
also be programmed to
train health care person-
nel, Mr. Wang said.

“There isn’t a lot of
Ebola expertise in the
United States,” he said.
“We can beam those
experts into the 1,000
hospitals that have our
systems instantly.”
Robots might be
programmed to provide
interactive checklists to
medical personnel who
are putting on and taking
off gowns, much in the
way aircraft pilots work
from checklists on takeoff
and landing.
Some experts have also
suggested that
telepresence robots might
help language interpreters
offer assistance in the
field. But dexterous
robots that move without
human guidance are only
beginning to appear in
laboratories. A robot that
could work in close
contact with a patient,
replacing a nurse or a
doctor, is still years away.
Humanoid rescue
robots were on display in
December in Florida at a
contest created by Darpa,
part of the Defense
Department, which is
hoping to spark innovation in the design of
machines that are capable
of operating autonomously in hostile
environments.
mainly would be on the areas
like Muhana, Jagatpura,
Shivdaspura, and Kanota
which are on the city outskirts, as most illegal
Bangladeshi migrants reside
there. The officer said the survey won't be restricted to just
checking their identity cards
as such people get fake IDs.
We would be sending
teams to cross check the details and even communicate
with agencies in Bangladesh
to verify the facts, he added.
"Illegal migrants get into
garbage picking or other such
jobs. They also commit crime
and after which they flee to
Bangladesh," he said.
Recently, members of a
Bangladeshi gang, raped a
woman and committed dacoity
in Vaishali Nagar area in the
city. PTI
