Farewell to Year 12 Students
Our Year 12 students completed their formal classroom lessons this week and now have study
leave to prepare for their final examinations. Year 12 teachers will be available to see students
throughout the entire examination period and I encourage our students to make the most of
their services.
We farewelled the class at school on Wednesday, with a breakfast in the cafeteria, followed
by formal House farewells, cuff-link presentations by fathers of Year 12 students who were
also Old Boys of the Grammarians’ Association, followed by brunch. The day finished with a
Leavers’ Service at St Mark’s Church, and a Valedictory Dinner at the MCG with their parents
and teachers. The day was mixed with emotion, excitement and memories for these students,
who have been part of our lives for so long. It was wonderful to celebrate their years of
schooling at CGS with them.
We now wish these students all the very best as they prepare for their examinations, which
begin for most students next Wednesday 29 October, with English. Our Year 11 students now
take on the mantle of leaders of the school, and I look forward to the contribution that they
will make over the next twelve months.

2014 Australian Science Olympiad Summer School
Two of our Year 11 students, Garry Zhu and Nicholas Hansen, have been selected to attend
the elite Australian Science Olympiad Summer School in Canberra over the Christmas break,
following their outstanding performance in the qualifying exam in August in which 4000
students took part.
They will join 80 of Australia’s most talented science students at this intensive residential
program. The summer school is held at The Australian National University in Canberra from
6 to 22 January 2015 and is an opportunity for talented students to work with others who are
passionate about Science. We wish both boys our congratulations and wish them all the best
for the program.
Music Achievement
Congratulations to Nathan Fong (Year 10) who was recently awarded his L.Mus.A in Violin adding
to his A.Mus.A. in piano and also in violin. The LMus.A is a diploma awarded to outstanding
candidates in the field of practical musical performance, musicianship and music theory by the
Australian Music Examinations Board, and is the equivalent of a University qualification. To win
this award in Year 10 is an extraordinary achievement.
State Constitutional Convention for Victorian Students
The Annual State Constitutional Convention for Victorian
students held in the Legislative Assembly Chamber of State
Parliament was a vibrant affair with the topic: Australia is in
a ‘budget crisis’ and all Australians must share the burden –
directly and indirectly providing much substance for debate.
The Camberwell Grammar delegates: Isaac Choong, Farouk
Al-Salihi and Jasper MacCuspie (all Year 11) addressed the
convention at several points in the day’s proceedings and
provided leadership skills during the plenary sessions.

Farewell to Year 12 Students
The day ended with a general resolution that Australia was not in a budget crisis but there
needed to be a more equitable distribution of taxation which truly reflects individuals and
companies’ ability to contribute. All delegates are now qualified to apply for the National
Convention to be held in Canberra in March 2015.

The opening round of the summer season was held last weekend. While only a few teams had
fixtured matches, all teams demonstrated their competitiveness.
The First XI Cricket began the season against Peninsula at home, combining youth (five
debutants) with experience. Camberwell won the toss and chose to bat. The openers, Finn
MacLennan (Year 11) and Jonathon Thiele (Year 9), led the side to a positive start; however,
a good spell from Peninsula’s opening bowlers put Camberwell on the back foot at 3/41. The
ship was soon steadied by the middle order, and a score of 224 was posted after some useful
contributions by Andrew Young (Year 10) (38), Lachie Powell (Year 10) (30) and Captain Oliver
Chauhan (Year 11) (82 n.o.).
Camberwell started their bowling innings strongly with Max Henderson (Year 10) and Michael
Liu (Year 10) making early breakthroughs. However, Peninsula’s number three put up strong
resistance, working hard to score a fine century. A combination of missed opportunities and
the class of the centurion placed Camberwell as second best on the day, a disappointing result
but with many positive signs for the ensuing season.
In First Basketball, Camberwell lost its opening round clash with Peninsula. Trailing early,
Camberwell fought back to take the lead early in the second half before Peninsula once again
regained the lead. With less than ten seconds remaining in the game Camberwell had control of
an out of bounds play. A set play, designed by Head Coach, Steve Blackley, led to a potentially
match-winning shot. Unfortunately the shot was long, hitting the rim and CGS went down 5149.
First Tennis sent out a young team that included five Year 9 and one Year 8 student, all keen
to play the opening round of the season, at home, against Peninsula. The opening doubles
games were tense with Camberwell recording good wins to the number one pairing of team
Captain, Trevor Doan (Year 11) and Vice Captain Lucas Stambos (Year 11); and also the
young, but powerful, number three pairing of Alek Harper (Year 9) and Stephen Chen (Year 9).
Two agonising losses in tiebreaks meant the score line was 2-2 heading into the second round
of doubles games. Camberwell’s dominance at the net was pivotal in securing three further
wins in the doubles matches; including Kevin Luo’s (Year 9) first win playing as a member of
the First team. Needing a few singles games early on to secure a victory, Lachlan Li (Year 8),
playing his first match in the Firsts, showed impressive composure to win a tiebreak, setting
up the team for the remaining games. Stephen Chen’s serve was on song as he dominated his
opponent to win 8-1. Camberwell’s experienced top three players all won impressive games
in their first singles outing for the season, with Lucas Stambos at number one winning 8-0.
The final score: Camberwell 10 sets (110 games) defeated Peninsula 6 sets (86 games).
Camberwell plays Ivanhoe at Melbourne Park next week.
All six squash teams performed competitively in the recently joined Victorian Schools Pennant
competition where many hard fought tussles were witnessed. Matthew Appleby (Year 11), a
new recruit, performed admirably in the doubles with powerful overhead serves whilst Jack
Hughes (Year 7) offered fierce resistance finally going down with a nail biting loss 59 to 63.
This week sees all other teams facing their first game of the season. Good Luck!

Year 8 Social
It has been a big week for our Year 8 boys as they prepare for Friday night’s Social. Ticket sales
have been very strong at Camberwell Girls’ Grammar, Fintona and PLC, so it promises to be a
great night. The lunchtime dance lessons have certainly been a highlight this week. The Social
starts at 7.30pm and the boys can be picked up at 10.30pm. Please remember that we want
all boys to be picked up by an adult at the conclusion of the night. My thanks to Mr Tierney for
all the great work that he puts into making this event a major success each year.
Run/Walk for Koala Kids
The Run/Walk for Koala Kids takes place next Wednesday, between 11.30am and 12.30pm.
The boys are encouraged to gather as many sponsors as possible for the event. A sausage
sizzle under the Atrium will conclude what should be a great occasion. The boys are permitted
to wear their sports uniform to and from school next Wednesday. A reminder that we would love
to hear from any parents who can help us to cook sausages from 11.00am next Wednesday.

last week and Year 7 boys headed to the pool this afternoon for their trials. Our Year 6 students
have been previously timed during their PE classes.
First XI Cricket
Well done to Sam Windisch (Year 8) and Ray Son (Year 7), who are both members of the First
XI Cricket squad. Sam played in the first match of the season last week, which is a significant
achievement for a Year 8 student. We wish the boys well for the season ahead.
da Vinci Decathlon
A team of boys ventured to MLC on Wednesday to compete in the Year 8 da Vinci Decathlon
competition. Teams score points across ten disciplines in what is quite an intense day of
competition. Our team placed second of 16 teams, winning the English and the Games and
Strategy components. Well done to David Chen, Charles Li, James Leung, Luc Raszewski,

A round of Firsts matches last weekend with Tennis, was the only one of three close encounters
to get a first up win. Squash also commenced in the new Squash Victoria Competition format
where schools and local clubs have combined. Camberwell fared well, and we look forward to
the new challenge and direction Squash has taken, thanks to Squash Victoria and the AGSV.
The Kayaking Squad also enjoyed their first competition of the season in Bendigo over two
days, with several races over varying distances. Thanks to Ms Newbold and Friends of Kayaking
for their support of this event.
Saturday Sport commences this Saturday so make sure your son is aware of where he is
playing and whether he is required to take a bus or not. This information can be found on the
new website under Sporting Fixtures. Next week there is no training due to the long weekend.
Only Firsts will train next week with some Development Squad Cricket Matches happening also.
Training will recommence on Wednesday 5 November for all teams after Melbourne Cup Day.
If your son is interested in playing some hockey outside of school Kew Hockey Club is running
a competition for Under 10-16s on a Thursday evening from 6.00 pm onwards. Please see me

Friends of Library Book Exchange
The Friends of Library Second Hand Book Exchange is coming up once again to help CGS
families get rid of unwanted books, purchase their sons’ required books at great value prices
and raise valuable funds for the School. As always, there will be plenty of opportunities for CGS
community members to volunteer to assist with this important event, and all support - whether
a little or a lot, is very welcome!
Upcoming Friends of Library Dates
Wednesday 29 October, 8.30pm, Development Office
Book Exchange is just around the corner and we are having a planning meeting for all who
may be interested in helping. The Book Exchange is a great service to the school community
and helps raise important funds for the Libraries, it’s also great fun and a good opportunity to
meet other parents, past parents and friends of the School.
Tuesday 11 November, 9.00am, Development Office
If you have an hour or three to spare on this morning, please join us to help collate book lists
and other important information for families as we continue to prepare for the Book Exchange
- and get our boys ready for 2015. Many hands make light work, so if you’re able to spare any
time to help, it would be very much appreciated!
All are welcome to attend!

Kangaroobie Meats – Beef & Lamb Sales
Direct to Your School
www.kangaroobiemeats.com
Camberwell Grammar School has been bringing students to Kangaroobie
farm and school camp for well over 20 years. Matt Bowker (1990), Old
Boy and owner of Kangaroobie, is happy to bring the farm back to the
School by offering the sale of high quality grass fed beef and lamb directly
to the School community.
How does it work?
It’s easy. Simply visit the online store and place an order at
http://www.shop.kangaroobiemeats.com/. Deadline for ordering is Tuesday 25
November at 6.00pm.
We will then bring your order to Camberwell Grammar, outside the Cafeteria on
Thursday 27 November at 3.00pm. You or your son can pick up the order
directly from us, the farmers who raised your meat.
Who benefits?
Your school – 5% of sales will go directly to the Friends of Performing Arts.
You and your family – Buying direct from the farmer means you can trust that
your food has been produced ethically and responsibly. Also grass fed products
are rich in all the fats now proven to be health-enhancing, including omega 3
and 6 fatty acids.
