About the CPD: Revitalised Old Tai O Police Station Old Tai O Police Station, a Hong Kong Grade II Historic Building, was built in 1902 by the British government as one of its first colonial police stations. It’s strategic location enabled police to guard the western border between China and Hong Kong. The station closed in 2002 and was left vacant for close to a decade. Under the Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme by Development Bureau of Hong Kong Government, the Hong Kong Heritage Conservation Foundation Limited was chosen to conserve the site in 2009, and to operate it as Tai O Heritage Hotel (since 2012). The adaptive reuse project follows Burra Charter principles, such as choosing a compatible new use while retaining “spirit of place”. Tai O Heritage Hotel has nine rooms and one restaurant. It operates as a non-‐profit social enterprise, provides local employment and uses local ingredients, so as to support the sustainable growth of the village. Not only was the historic site conserved and turned into a nine-‐suite boutique hotel, but the place also was used as a platform to celebrate its rich history, and to help rejuvenate the historic Tai O fishing village. Tai O Heritage Hotel has been awarded an Award of Merit at UNESCO 2013 Asia-‐Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation for its dedication to celebrating its heritage significance and engagement with the fishing village community and formal occupants of the heritage place through extensive cultural mapping exercises. Through organising a series of workshops, the project aims at gathering personal experiences and valuable recollections of the elderly in Tai O and writing scripts with the oral information so collected, providing an opportunity for the elderly to act out their stories on stage themselves. The project is implemented in six phases: http://www.lcsd.gov.hk/CE/CulturalService/ab/en/OH_details_taio.php About the Tour Leader: Ms Winnie Yeung Winnie Yeung is currently the Manager of Sino Heritage, which is the heritage arm for the Sino Group, a property developer in Hong Kong.
