THE SILK ROAD FAIRYTALE

Festival: Little China in Holbæk - Week 36, 2016
THE SILK ROAD FAIRYTALE
Join the creation of a new and unique event
The Silk Road is a road that intertwines with the lives of great explorers and adventurers as Italian
Marc O'Polo. It is also a road that transcends time and space - which has created links between
various epochs and cultures across the globe. From China to Rome ... from China to Holbæk! A trip
through intricate worlds, cultures and religions establishing new relationships and lots of mystery:
primitive tribesmen, remote deserts, the wild unknown and the deep secrets of the ocean... It is
also the story of trade; on the exchange of goods and knowledge, under dangerous circumstances.
A story that stretches from east to west and embraces all aspects of life: conquest, globalization,
intellectualization, modernity, freedom, emotion and change. It is a story that you can now help to
bring to life here in Holbæk - with China as a starting point. See how you can contribute in this
booklet.
We need your help
The Panda Group in Holbæk is coordinating "THE SILK ROAD FAIRYTALE" which will be held for the
first time in week 36 in 2016. The festival aims to become a melting pot of Danish and Chinese
culture, gastronomy, education, science, business and sports, etc. The project will be based on the
good relations created between Holbæk and China. Most recently these relations have manifested
themselves in a "Sister City Agreement" between Holbæk Municipality and Quanzhou. The goal is
to support and further develop relationships and partnerships between Holbæk / Denmark and
China. To meet this objective and create a unique event with many stakeholders, we aim to
engage a diverse range of partners and ideas in Holbæk.
The planning of the festival is now about to start.
Associations, educational institutions, companies and
organizations have the opportunity to become an important
part of the development process. Please contact the
relevant working group through the contact persons
mentioned below. Looking forward to hear from you!
Background
Holbæk / Denmark (5.5 million inhabitants) and Quanzhou (8 million inhabitants) both have a long
history of trade, transport and maritime tradition. At the beginning of 2015, the new Silk Road
initiative named “One Belt, One Road” was launched by the Chinese government. This aims to
create a new development that will contribute to even closer ties and increased trade between
China, Central Asia and Europe. On page 3 you can see the preliminary working groups (of early
2015) to be set up in order to implement and support the "The Silk Road Fairytale” here in
Holbæk.
Target Groups
The festival wishes to attract the following target groups:
Holbæk’s contacts in China; including official representatives, business, culture and sport
delegations from Quanzhou
Citizens in Holbæk Municipality
Guests / tourists from the rest of Zealand
The approximately 10,000 Chinese living in Denmark, Danish- and Chinese governmental
representatives and Danish-Chinese organizations
Success Criteria
Establish Holbæk as a Chinese gateway to Denmark
Create and strengthen relations between Holbæk and Quanzhou, Holbæk’s new friendship
city
Increase awareness / interest in China among Holbæk Municipality's citizens, businesses,
cultural and educational institutions
Involve and engage all participants

About our sister city Quanzhou in China
Quanzhou is home to more than 8 million inhabitants and is
one of the cities that the Chinese government has appointed as
China's 24 famous cultural cities. The city is also known for its
puppet shows and it boasts of three operas: Liyuan Opera,
Gaojia Opera and Dacheng Opera. Furthermore, the city is
cosmopolitan and contains plenty of educational institutions
and a progressive business environment.
Quanzhou was built in 718 and thus has a long history. During
the Song Dynasty (960-1279) the city expanded rapidly and was
for centuries one of China's most important southern harbour
cities. In the Middle Ages Quanzhou was one of the world's
largest harbour cities, and it can be considered a starting point
for the maritime Silk Road.
The Panda Group in Holbæk - consisting of representatives from Stenhus Gymnasium & HF, Stenhus
Boarding School, Holbæk Municipality, Holbæk Business Forum, Holbæk Basketball Club, Holbæk Theatre,
Theatre Fair Play, The Art School in Holbæk and the local business community – cooperates to create and
maintain close relationships and innovative collaborations with China.
