IT Back to School
• Back to school is a service provided by the Department of
Information Technology. This service configures student
laptops to the university’s wireless and wired networks,
installs latest anti-virus software, configures university e-mail,
and more.
• During back to school, Information Technology will be
available in four additional locations, including the residential
colleges
• Services offered during back to school:
• Wireless Configuration
• Wired Configuration

Back to School Schedule
• Location: Stanford and Hecht Residential Colleges, and
C2 Remote Location
• Date: Tuesday, August 20th through Thursday, August 22nd
• Hours of operation: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
• Location: Eaton Residential College
• Date: Tuesday, August 20th and Wednesday August 21st
• Hours of operation: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
• All service locations will be Closed Friday, August 23rd through
Sunday, August 25th

What to bring
• In order to ensure that your computer is configured in the fastest time possible,
please do the following:
• Make sure your laptop is fully charged and can run on at least 30 minutes
of battery
• Know your CaneID and Password to access CaneLink
• Bring your laptop charger
• Other notes:
• You must be present in order to receive service. You can come with your
parents, however, your parents cannot come in your place
• Due to the amount of students we are assisting during back to school, lines
do tend to get long, so plan accordingly
• If you cannot make it to any of our back to school locations during this
event, you may pass by the CaneNet Connection to have your computer
set up at a later date

Identification and Authentication
• UM ID: A unique alpha-numeric number used instead of your
Social Security Number to uniquely identify you
• Cane Card: An on-campus student identification card.
• CaneID: An authentication process that provides access to
multiple University systems and services with one username
and password

UM ID
• Unique alpha-numeric number used instead of your Social Security Number to
uniquely identify you. Example: C12345678.
• UM ID is not the same as your CaneID.
• Memorizing your UM ID is recommended.
• Your UM ID can be found in CaneLink (https://canelink.miami.edu). After you
log in, select “View UM ID number” located under “Personal Information” on
the left side of the screen.

Cane Card
• The official on-campus identification card
• It is your primary form of identification within the
University, and should always be carried with you at all
times
• Lost or stolen cards should be reported immediately to
the security office (305) 284-6666 (open 24 hours a
day) so they can be deactivated. For replacement
cards contact (305) 284-3096.

CaneID
• CaneID is an authentication process that provides access to University
systems and services using only one username and password
• Never give your password to anyone, University officials will NEVER ask for
your password
• Your CaneID safeguards your access and privileges on many UM systems
and should be known only to you
• Change your CaneID password if you suspect it has been discovered or
revealed to others

• The official University of Miami e-mail service
• Mandatory e-mail address for students
• What it offers:
• Campus-wide directory
• Shared calendar and reminders
• Anti-spam software
• 25 GB storage
• Currently being migrated to Office 365. Based

E-Mail Alias
• An e-mail alias is an alternate address pointing to where you want your e-mail
delivered
• Your e-mail alias will be the first letter of your first name, a period, followed by
your last name, a number may be appended at the end of your last name
• For example, for a user named “John Doe”, the alias would be
“[email protected]”
• You will be able to keep your e-mail alias after you graduate, once graduated
the e-mail alias can point to your preferred e-mail account, such as Gmail or
Hotmail

Blackboard
• Blackboard is an online course system used
by professors to post grades, documents,
assignments, etc.
• Blackboard has tools to assist in group
studying, sharing of documents, etc.
• Your professor will notify you if there is a
course site for your class on Blackboard
• Blackboard accounts are automatically
generated for students

Wireless
• Wireless: The University of Miami’s wireless network is available in most areas
throughout our campuses. Students should use the SecureCanes wireless
network to connect and you must register your computer and mobile devices to
connect to this wireless network.
• Guests with unregistered devices may use the guest wireless network,
WirelessCanes, with reduced connection speeds.

Game Consoles

Game Consoles are supported at the University of Miami
• The Wii and XBox can be connected to our hidden wireless network
‘CaneGames’
• This network is only available in the Residential Colleges, University
Village, University Center and the new Student Activity Center.
• The PS3 can only be connected to the wired network, CaneNet.
• All game consoles must be registered before connecting them to our wired or
wireless networks.

AppleTV
•
AirPlay is supported at the University of Miami
• For AirPlay functionality, the AppleTV can connect to our hidden wireless
network ‘CaneGames’
• CaneGames is only available in the Residential Colleges, University
Village, University Center and the new Student Activity Center
• The AppleTV must be registered before connecting it to our network
• You can register your AppleTV by going to https://canelink.miami.edu or you can
bring your AppleTV to CaneNet Connection.

UPrint
•
UPrint is the mobile printing solution for students at the
Coral Gables and RSMAS campuses.
•
Environmentally-friendly printing solution, helping
reduce waste.
•
Students registered for credit classes will be given
130 “UPrint Credits” for the school year.
•
If you run out of “UPrint Credits” before the year ends,
you can pay for your printing with your CaneExpress
account.

Computer Labs
• Labs are located throughout the University, and are
managed by individual departments or schools.
• Each of the Residential Colleges has a computer
lab on the first floor with printers and scanners.
• The Richter Library has over 190 computers
available for students

Wireless Printing
• Wireless printing is allowed but highly discouraged unless your printer
has a wireless password (for security purposes). Without a password ,
other users on the wireless network can see and print to your printer.
Wireless printing is not supported by Information Technology.

Routers and Hubs
• The use of personal wireless routers on the university’s network
is prohibited.
• Using a wireless router can cause interference with the
university’s wireless network.
• Hubs or Switches which are used to multiply connectivity
through a network cable are strictly prohibited.

Peer to Peer Software
• Peer to Peer software is a file sharing technology that allows
users to share files on their computer with other users on the
internet.
• There are several risks with using Peer to Peer software such
as:
• Installation of malicious software
• Exposure of sensitive or personal information
• Denial of service
• Susceptibility of attack
• Sharing of Copyright materials
• Students using peer to peer software such as, but not limited
to: Kazaa, Limewire, Imesh, BearShare, Azureus, Utorrent, etc.
