Dear Dr. Weese and Staff:
I am writing this letter to say thank-you for giving me the gift of life. My name is Woula Ralle
and I am a 69-year-old grandmother of three. I recently had surgery at Christ Medical Center to remove
a small cancerous growth that doctors caught just in time, before it spread.
I was lucky because Dr. Weese convinced me to get screened for colorectal cancer. I wasn’t interested
in getting tested because my mother is 93 years old and is as strong and beautiful as ever. She never
had any problems, so I assumed I wouldn’t have any problems. But I am so grateful that I listened to
Dr. Weese because that test saved my life.
My husband George is thankful, too. I can’t imagine life without him. We’ve been married for
45 years and have a modest little home in Oak Lawn, but it is more than enough for the two of us.
Both George and I have received medical care from Advocate Christ Medical Center for many years.
I actually gave birth to both of my kids at Christ Medical Center. My oldest son, Angelo, was born
at Christ 45 years ago and thanks to Dr. Weese, I plan to live to be 100—long enough to watch my
grandchildren grow up and maybe one day have their kids delivered at Christ Medical Center, too.
Thanks so much,
Woula Ralle, Oak Lawn
Dr. James Weese is medical director of the Cancer Institute at Advocate Christ Medical Center.
He performed Ralle’s surgery utilizing his own specialized technique which allowed him to avoid any
incision on her abdomen. “I’m pleased at how everything turned out. We were able to safely remove the
tumor without any complications.” Dr. Weese says finding colorectal cancer before symptoms develop
can significantly improve a patient’s chance of survival. “In Ralle’s case, if she had not had a colorectal
screening, her outcome could have been dramatically different.” Ralle’s cancer was discovered by her
gastroenterologist, who performed a colonoscopy and advised her to get an endoscopic ultrasound, a specialized
test available at Advocate Christ Medical Center, which helps determine the invasiveness of a cancer.
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States
in both males and females, according to the CDC. Dr. Weese recommends that patients begin screening
at age 50 if there are no risk factors other than age for colorectal cancers.
CUTTING-EDGE TREATMENT OPTIONS
When you are facing surgery, you want to know that your physicians can choose the
best treatment option, whether that means traditional open surgery or something
more high tech. At Advocate Christ Medical Center, we have the newest, most
advanced surgical technologies available, as well as the highly trained, highly skilled
staff to use them.
Stereotaxis
Electrophysiologists (cardiologists who specialize in heart rhythms) can treat
complex arrhythmias using magnetic technology to guide catheters through the
chambers of the heart by remote control. The procedure is safer than manual
navigation because it minimizes the risk of puncture.
da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System
Using this state-of-the-art technology (shown above), surgeons can perform highly
complex procedures through 2½-inch incisions, providing an alternative to open
surgery with less risk of infection and faster recovery times.
At Advocate Christ Medical Center, we are
improving cancer care with the CyberKnife®
Radiosurgery System. The CyberKnife is a robotic
technology that uses precisely targeted doses
of radiation to treat tumors anywhere in the body.
Unlike conventional radiation treatments,
CyberKnife uses the body’s own structures to
identify the extent of a tumor. Because the radiation is targeted only to tumor cells, each session
can use much higher doses of radiation, resulting in considerably fewer total sessions for the
patient and less damage to surrounding tissue.
Advocate Christ Medical Center was one of the
first medical centers in the United States to offer
CyberKnife Radiosurgery and the first center in
Illinois to use the system to treat lung cancer.
Merci Retrieval System™
A highly successful and minimally invasive treatment option, this revolutionary
device can almost triple the window of time available to doctors to treat or reverse
a stroke. Specialists at Christ Medical Center thread a catheter from the groin to the
site of the blood clot and remove it, restoring blood flow in the brain.
CyberKnife® Radiosurgery System
Physicians use this breakthrough technology to treat cancerous and non-cancerous
tumors anywhere in the body, while sparing healthy tissue. Hundreds of focused
radiation beams deliver higher doses of radiation than standard therapy, translating
to fewer sessions.
EBUS: Endobronchial ultrasound
Available at only a few Illinois institutions, including Christ Medical Center, EBUS
allows physicians to evaluate very small tumors in the esophagus and lungs, as
well as biopsy suspicious lymph nodes. Physicians use a special endoscope with an
ultrasound tip to diagnose and stage tumors smaller than a centimeter in size.

q
Did you know? In the United States, approximately 25 percent of lung cancers are diagnosed at stage II.
p
Patricia Giliberto of New Lenox, Ill., had
been putting off seeing a doctor about her
persistent cough and congestion. She was
sure that it was just another case of bronchitis.
When she decided to visit an emergency care
center for a prescription, Patricia found out
that her condition was much more serious.
Remembering that both her brother and
former mother-in-law had been treated by
the cancer specialists at Advocate Christ
Medical Center, Patricia made an appointment
with a pulmonologist at Christ Medical
Center’s Cancer Institute. She was quickly
diagnosed with stage II lung cancer; the
tumor covered a large portion of her lung.
Within weeks, thoracic surgeons at Christ
Medical Center removed the middle and lower
lobes of Patricia’s right lung, and she began
chemotherapy treatment in the Outpatient
Oncology Infusion Center, where the oncology
nurses kept her calm and focused on beating
the disease. Today, Patricia is cancer-free,
and she is looking forward to celebrating her
daughter’s high school graduation.
Dedicated Cancer Care Center

Q.
A.
How do you know if
you have lung cancer?
Symptoms such as coughing,
prolonged chest pain or shortness
of breath should be brought to
the attention of your physician.
We will then conduct tests—most likely
a chest X-ray or CAT scan to look for a
tumor. If those tests indicate an abnormal
mass, we will perform a needle biopsy
or a bronchoscopy (a test in which a thin
tube fitted with a camera
and small surgical tool is
inserted into the bronchial
passage) to extract tissue
from the lungs for closer
examination.

of Thoracic Oncology at the

Patricia’s cancer was caught at an
early stage. After treatment, she is

In a typical stage II cancer, cancer
cells have moved beyond the confines
of the tumor and have begun to affect
surrounding tissues, usually the lymph
nodes.

Cancer Treatments
Advocate Christ Medical Center is
especially noted for the treatment
of newly diagnosed lung cancers.
Our highly trained, dedicated thoracic surgeons conduct hundreds
of surgeries each year. This translates to better outcomes and fewer
complications.

YOU NEED
TO KNOW
It is easy to forget to schedule a doctor’s appointment when you’re
feeling fine, but remember: annual physicals are essential, and
screenings for the most prevalent forms of cancer should be part
of everyone’s routine.
“Treatments for many cancers and other conditions have a high
success rate when detected early. Breast cancer, for instance, has
a 96 percent recovery rate when treated during the first two stages,”
says Barbara Kreuger, M.D., breast cancer surgeon. “Patients who get
regular screenings and checkups are much more likely to catch these
health problems in time.”
To remember your checkup, it can help to schedule them
around important dates, such as birthdays or before holidays.
Colorectal Cancer. Begin regular screening for colorectal cancer at age 50. Start earlier if you have a family history of colorectal
cancer or certain diseases of the colon. Your doctor can help you
decide which test is right for you. How often you need to be tested
will depend on which test is recommended.
Skin Cancer. Check your skin monthly for anything that looks
unusal. Melanoma is the most common form of skin cancer; it can
be treated successfully if caught early.
Cervical Cancer. Have a Pap smear every one to three years
if you are older than 21 or have been sexually active.
Breast Cancer. Mammography can detect many types of breast
cancer even before you can feel a lump. Women with average risk
and no family history of breast cancer should begin getting
mammograms every year after they turn 40.
Prostate Cancer. All men over 50 should be offered an
annual screening that includes a prostate-specific antigen (PSA)
test and digital rectal examination (DRE). African Americans
should have this test beginning at age 45, and any man with
a family history of prostate cancer should start at age 40.
GET IT DONE Call 1.800.3.ADVOCATE (1.800.323.8622)
to set up an appointment for screening.

Know Your
Numbers
Find out if you are at risk
With heart disease and stroke the leading causes of death
in the United States, and diabetes on the rise, it is more
important than ever to understand how they are linked.
According to the American Diabetes Association, as many as
two-thirds of people with diabetes die from heart disease and
stroke. Knowing your numbers can help lower your risk for all
three diseases.
Diabetes
Diabetes affects the body’s ability to produce
or use insulin, a hormone that converts
simple and complex sugars into energy.
While some genetic factors play a role, most
people develop diabetes as a result of poor
diet, a lack of exercise and obesity. The
primary indicator for diabetes is the blood
glucose level.
Normal blood glucose: 99 or lower
Diabetes: 126 or higher
Heart Disease
According to the American Heart
Association, about one in three
adults has at least one form of
heart disease. You can reduce
your risk by managing your cholesterol, blood pressure and body
mass index (BMI).

FLYING
Jimmy Martire is raring to go—now that
his cancer has been sent packing
8
”
Jimmy Martire never let go of the
positive, even when he faced his
diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma. With
his great attitude and bright personality,
Jimmy, age 10, wowed the staff at Advocate
Hope Children’s Hospital.
“Jimmy handled his disease very
remarkably,” says his doctor, pediatric
hematologist/oncologist Ammar Hayani,
M.D. “He’s a highly spirited young man, very
positive, very funny. He took it all in stride.”
Lymphoma is the third most common
pediatric cancer, following leukemia and
brain tumors. The lymphatic system is a
critical part of the body’s immune system.
There are two types of lymphoma: nonHodgkin’s lymphoma is more prevalent
among children under 10, while Hodgkin’s
lymphoma is more common in children
ages 10 to 20.
When Saleena Grahm, Jimmy’s mother,
discovered the swollen lymph nodes on his
neck, she immediately scheduled a doctor’s
appointment. The first blood test
came back normal, but since
the lymph nodes continued
growing, Grahm, who works
in real estate sales, asked to
have Jimmy re-examined.
His biopsy came back
positive.
According to
Dr. Hayani, swollen lymph nodes are the
most common symptom for lymphoma.
“Usually, the lymph nodes are not painful, so
kids and parents don’t worry about it much,”
he says. “But they’re a red flag if they persist
for weeks and months, particularly if they’re
growing in the middle to the bottom of the
neck or the armpit.”
Affected lymph nodes may also grow
in the chest behind the sternum. They
are not visible, but will cause a persistent,
dry cough. Other symptoms of lymphoma
include night sweats, fever and weight loss.
In September, Jimmy was referred to
Hope Children’s Hospital. The hospital is
an important part of Advocate Health Care,
providing superior pediatric care to patients
in Chicago’s Southland and northwest
Indiana. Jimmy’s doctors at Hope order
a round of combined chemotherapy and
radiation treatment that lasted four months.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better place for
Jimmy’s treatment,” says Grahm. “Everyone
was so compassionate. Although the doctors
and staff were so focused on my son, they went
out of their way to tell me that they were there
for the parents, too. I wouldn’t have had it any
other way.”
Grahm remembers when Jimmy made more
than 50 paper airplanes while passing time in
isolation. The nurses hung all of them around
the room, dangling them from the ceiling.
“They all went the extra mile,” Grahm says.
Now Jimmy is in remission and getting
back to normal life as a fifth-grader. “His
hair’s starting to grow and he’s excited about
that. He’s glad to be back at school, and just
being able to be with his brothers and do boy
things,” says Grahm. “Jimmy’s a really strong
kid. He’s told me he’ll never look at life the
same way.”
