The Avenue des Champs-Élysées A Short History of the ChampsÉlysées The Avenue des Champs-Élysées is a boulevard in Paris that is one of the 12 roads that start and the huge roundabout where the Arc de Triomphe stands. From the Arc de Triomphe it extends to Place de la Concorde. It is two kilometres long and seventy meters wide. The name is French for Elysian Fields. It has had several remakes and extensions after its start in 1616. These included a remake in 1667, an extension in 1724, a remake in 1838 and a remake in 1994. It now has an underground car park, lots of trees and footpaths. The cars though, now take up half of the avenue. The Champs-Élysées is used for various celebrations. This includes New Year’s Eve and on the 14th of July you can witness military parades. It also has been used for events throughout history including France’s only world cup win in 1998 and the end of World War 2.
