Different connectives do different things. Link events by time and sequence Link causes with their effects Make links which add and build upon Connectives will help you to structure your writing by making it flow more. 11 of 27 © Boardworks Ltd 2006 Adding connectives AND is the most commonly used connective. Lei likes clothes. Lei likes shopping. Becomes Lei likes clothes and shopping. A comparison is when you link two things that are similar. Showing things in contrast is when you link two things by showing their difference. I love cheeseburgers with ketchup just as Megan loves hamburgers with ketchup. For these we use temporal connectives. These connectives can help to signal an order to your writing. For example: firstly during next later before finally What types of writing might benefit from the use of temporal connectives? Can you write using these connectives? Have a go! Write a guide to preparing tea and toast for an alien who has just landed on earth. What is the connective in this sentence? II like like Lei Lei because because she she makes me laugh. ‘Because’ is the most commonly used connective which links cause and effect. I will work hard at school so that I can go to university. I’m going to the shopping centre although I know it’ll be busy.
