A connective is a word or phrase which links two ideas.
Different connectives do different things.

What is the difference between comparing and
contrasting?
A comparison is when
you link two things that
are similar.
Showing things in contrast
is when you link two things
by showing their difference.
I love cheeseburgers with
ketchup just as Megan

I prefer mayonnaise on
chips whereas Tom
always has ketchup.

Time and sequence
Other ideas are linked by time or sequence. For these we
use temporal connectives. These connectives can help to
signal an order to your writing. For example:

use of temporal connectives?

Another type of connective helps to indicate a link between
a cause and an effect.
