Outbound travel agents
Travel agents provide the link between the tour operator and
the customer. For this reason, they are often referred to as
the middlemen of the industry.
Travel agents need to know the many different products and
services that are on offer, in order to be able to recommend
the right products and services to the customer.
Travel agents earn
commission for the
products and services
they manage to sell.

Outbound airlines
There are two different types of airline service.
Do you know what these are?
Scheduled (e.g. Virgin Atlantic, British Airways)
These operate to a published timetable. Flights must depart
on schedule regardless of how many seats are booked.
Charter (e.g. Thomson Airways, Monarch Airways)
These are usually contracted for a specific holiday season.
The airlines rent out their aircraft to package holiday
companies, who fill up the seats with their customers.
Increasingly, airlines are offering
both scheduled and charter services.

Outbound rail services
Case study: the Channel Tunnel
The Channel Tunnel is an
undersea rail tunnel linking
England with northern France.
Its Eurotunnel and Eurostar
services have meant tourists can
get to Europe faster than ever.
Direct destinations include Lille,
Calais, Disneyland Paris and
Brussels. High speed connections
to many other destinations around
Europe are also offered.
How are the services offered by Eurostar and
Eurotunnel different from each other?
