Bogart’s Steakhouse
keeps guests coming back
By Lori Beth Susman
BAY ST. LOUIS — When a restaurant sees a
number of repeat customers, known as “regulars,” it is
a good sign the restaurant is doing something right.
Take Bogart’s Steakhouse inside Hollywood Casino
Gulf Coast, for example. While the casual, finedining restaurant garners new guests daily, many of
the customers are regulars attesting to the quality of
the food and the friendliness of the servers.
Located on the second floor of the casino,
Bogart’s has a pleasant steakhouse atmosphere with
its dark woods and neutral colors. All tables and
booths have beautiful views of the Bay of St. Louis
and the resort’s marina. In fact, it is not unusual
while dining to see boaters fishing in the water.
The comfortable bar at the front of the
restaurant is a great spot for an aperitif or an afterdinner cocktail. There is plenty of seating in the bar
area, and diners
coming in after a day
on the boat or after
playing 18 holes at
Hollywood’s own

Club can relax
with an ice-cold
beverage.
As we looked

began our evening with a glass of Kendall Jackson
merlot and a cold Abita Amber on tap. After
Ahi tuna at Bogart’s Steakhouse
consulting with our waiter, we selected crab cakes and
Bogart’s shrimp as our appetizers. Recommended as
one of the more popular items, the crab cakes were
thick patties with big chunks of jumbo lump crab
broiled to a golden brown. We were impressed with
the size of the cakes, which we enjoyed with housemade remoulade sauce. It was easy to see why this was
dubbed a favorite.
The second appetizer we tried was a dish of lightly
fried shrimp coated in a spicy, creamy sauce. There

was a bit of kick to the sauce, and we agreed
Bogart’s shrimp was also a great way to start
our dining experience. Crab fingers, seafood au
gratin, shrimp cocktail, sesame-crusted ahi tuna
and shrimp and grits with alligator sausage in a
Cajun sauce were some of the other appetizers
offered.
Next, we decided to split a salad. What is a
steakhouse without a great wedge? Of course,
we tried the Bogart’s wedge, and thoroughly
enjoyed the chunk of lettuce served with
15-oz. rib-eye steak (above), crab cakes (below)
cucumber and tomato strips, thinly sliced red
onion, bacon, bleu cheese and a balsamic glaze.

The beef choices are perfect for steak lovers. We
Additional salads to try are the Caesar, chopped opted for the 15-oz. rib eye, which was cooked to order
and spinach. Soups include French onion topped and perfectly seasoned with Bogart’s sear, which can be
with French bread and provolone and lobster bisque added to any steak. Each bite was tender and the steak
held its flavor from the first taste to the last.
Other choices include the 8- and 12-oz. filet, the
18-oz. New York strip, the 22-oz. bone-in cowboy-cut
rib eye and the 12-oz. rib eye. Prime rib is served in
two sizes to fit any appetite. Plus, there are a number
of toppers, such as Bearnaise and hollandaise sauce
and a bleu-cheese crust or guests can have their steak

Fish lovers will want to try the ahi
tuna, a definite Jackpot! favorite. This
large piece of tuna was grilled just
the way we requested (we like it rare)
and topped with a generous serving
of jumbo lump crab. Under the
tuna was a bed of sauteed zucchini,
onions, peppers and tomatoes, all
working to make this one delicious
fish dish.
Diners will also take note of
the whole Maine lobster, the
seafood platter, the redfish with
crawfish risotto and chicken
piccata. Crawfish, shrimp and
crab tossed in a cream sauce
makes up the seafood pasta,
which even comes topped with a
fried jumbo soft-shell crab.
Sauteed Brussels sprouts are
flavored with a hearty serving of
bacon and the cheesy au gratin
potatoes boasts thick potato slices
— certainly not the kind that comes
from a box. We made short work of
both these side dishes, which were
perfect with our steak and tuna.
Also offered are baked potatoes,
sweet potato casserole, asparagus,
mushrooms, garlic mashed potatoes
and macaroni and cheese.
Be sure to save room for dessert
as we did. And, we were glad to have
done so. Along with chocolate cake,

pecan pie and crème brulee, there
was a pumpkin spice cheesecake
that caught our eye. We got a huge
slice of this luscious treat served with
freshly made whipped cream and
caramel sauce. It was a perfect start
to the holiday season and a great way
to end our meal. The pumpkin spice
cheesecake, a seasonal favorite, will
be around through November.

Charley Pride: From ball player to hit maker
BILOXI — Born to poor sharecroppers,
one of 11 children in Sledge, Miss., Charley
Pride is a timeless everyman, revered by his
musical peers and adored by countless millions
of fans around the globe. Pride brings his golden
baritone voice to Beau Rivage for one show only
on Friday, Nov. 7, at 8 p.m.
The singer unofficially started his music
career in the late 1950s as a ballplayer with
the Negro American League’s Memphis Red
Sox singing and playing guitar on the team
bus between ballparks. Self-taught on a guitar
bought at the age 14 from Sears Roebuck, Pride
would join various bands on stage as he and the
team roved the country.
After a tryout with the New York Mets,
Pride decided to return to his Montana home
via Nashville. It was there he met Jack Johnson,
who upon hearing the singer perform, sent him
on his way with the promise of a management
contract.
A year later, Pride returned to the Music
City and was introduced to producer, Jack
Clement, who gave him several songs to learn.
When Clement heard Pride’s renditions, he
immediately asked the fledgling singer if he
could cut two songs in two hours. Pride agreed,
and “The Snakes Crawl at Night” and “Atlantic
Coastal Line” were recorded.
Three months later, Pride’s two song demo
landed in the hands of already legendary RCA
Records head, Chet Atkins, who was so moved
he immediately signed him to the label. Pride’s
first single hit the airwaves in January 1966 and
just like that his star was on the rise. Within
a short period of time “The Snakes Crawl at
Night” was climbing the charts with his “Before
I Met You” closing in on its tail. Between 1969,
when he first hit No. 1 on the singles chart with
“All I Have to Offer You (Is Me),” and 1984,
when he commanded the top spot again with
“Every Heart Should Have One,” Pride scored
more than 36 No. 1 country singles.
Over the past 30 years, Pride has remained
one of the Top 20 best-selling country artists
of all-time. On RCA Records, Pride is second
in sales only to Elvis Presley. Dozens of his
chart toppers now stand as modern classics.
“Kiss An Angel Good Morning” went on to
be a million-selling crossover single and helped
Pride land Country Music Association Awards
as Entertainer of the Year in 1971 and Top Male
Vocalist in 1971 and 1972.
Other memorable Pride standards include
“Is Anybody Goin’ To San Antone?” “I’m
So Afraid of Losing You Again,” “Mississippi

When you receive good service at a casino, it
is customary to award the person giving the
good service a gratuity (tip). Jackpot! readers
ask us occassionally what the appropriate
tip to leave might be for quality service for
different casino employees. Obviously, many
things factor into this, so please note that the
information below is just a guideline, and
impeccable service would receive a higher tip.

HOROSCOPE
The theme of this period is buried secrets, Scorpio
Editor’s Note: These horoscopes are meant for entertainment purposes
only and are for the time period October 30 - November 12, 2014.
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) — The theme of
this period is buried secrets coming to light.
The past comes to the forefront and features
in your life. You abhor the process but it removes a
substantial degree of confusion in the eyes of others
generally.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) — This
period appeals to the impulsive side of your
nature. You can waste a lot of time and
energy running around trying options that in the
end are not suitable. Figure out what you want
beforehand.
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) — Physical
activity is the best use for your energies; so
you could try gardening and DIY, going to
the gym and playing competitive sport, or throwing
yourself into various career objectives. Emulate the
human dynamo. Fall into bed each night so tired you
can’t think any longer as your grief for so many things
gradually burns itself out and your foundations for
the future grow obvious.
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) — It is not yet
the moment to make a major change. Keep
working on the lines you’ve established, yet
there are still minor improvements you can promote
to better your circumstances in the meantime. This
is a good period for your close relationships so you
don’t need to bear the burden of responsibility alone.
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 19) — Neptune in
your sign for the long haul is a double-edged
sword. On the plus side this planet is linked
with intuition and idealism, helping you to visualize
your perfect situation and instinctively know how to
attain your dreams. Less favorably, it has been tied in
with confusion, self-deception and escapism.
Aries (March 20-April 19) — This period
brings freedom, change and individuality
as you liberate yourself from excessive
limitations and make life what you want it to be.
Don’t anticipate a lot to occur in the way you’d have
thought. Expect the unexpected and surprises.
28 JACKPOT! MAGAZINE ‡ October 30 - November 12, 2014
Taurus (April 20-May 20) — The longstanding emphasis on your partnership
affairs intensifies. Close friendships and even
business links are noticeably highlighted. The current
trend help outline some of the compromises you can
make, so as to let others share in your life equally.
Gemini (May 21-June 20) — Obligation
and responsibility keep you on your toes.
This unremitting pressure is nothing new,
although its severity comes and goes. It isn’t easy
sometimes, leaving you tired because of a cumulative
impact. Work on adopting better health practices.
Cancer (June 21-July 22) — If you have
children or care for them, you’ll find they take
up plenty of your time and in ways you were
not expecting. The reasons could be financial, as the
Bank of Mum and Dad could be expected to come to
their rescue again. Whether in fact you do so is up to
you, since it comes down to your assessment of your
current position.
Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) — A big personality
like yours isn’t always the asset you’d think it
might be. For a performer or a world leader
it is obviously an enormous plus to have a presence
that commands attention. But at close quarters the
situation is complicated. All members of a happy
home must believe they make their own contribution.
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — Think how your
relationships could improve. What matters
the most, continuing with a viewpoint that
has seen happier days, or enjoying more harmonious
relationships?
Libra (Sep. 23-Oct. 22) — An enormous
amount has happened recently in your life,
Libra, and some events come to a head
during this important period. Pay close attention as
it is during this period of time that you are left to
consider what you’ve learned and how to apply these
insights.
