Exhibitions
At the Nature and Culture Centre Myrthuegård you can learn
about the nature and the history of the area. The exhibition
»where river, sea and people meet« is open every day from
10.00 – 20.00. In the exhibition cinema many different films
concerning the area can be seen. Free admission.
At Marbækgård by the lakes there is also an exhibition on the
nature of the area.
Ausstellungen
In dem Natur und Kultur Zentrum Myrthuegård kann man über
die Natur und Geschichte der Gegend Auskünfte kriegen. Die
Ausstellung »Wo Bach, Meer und Mensch sich begegnet« ist
alle Tage von 10.00 – 20.00 Uhr geöffnet. Im Ausstellungskino kann man verschiedene Filme über die Umgebung sehen.
Eintritt frei. Auf Marbækgård bei den Seen ist auch eine Ausstellung über die Natur der Gegend.
Marbæk – varied nature and 10.000 years
of history
The Marbæk plantation together with the protected heath,
the beach and the meadows along the Varde Stream form a
greatly varied nature area with many different nature types.
The history of the past is both interesting and
dramatic. The present landscape was formed
by the previous and last Ice Age, which let
go of its hold approximately 10.000 years
ago and poured water and sand over the
south-western of Jutland. Man has influenced the area since the Stone Age. In the present plantation
field boundaries from the late Stone Age (around the birth of
Christ) are visible and in both Myrthue and Sjelborg there are
paved floors in the Iron Age farmhouses. Such paved floors
are only present in the south-western Jutland. Several grave
mounds from the Stone and Bronze Age are visible in the area.
On the contrary the Wadden Sea to the west represents a
vey young landscape, created during a few thousand decades.
From the sea grew a so called barrier coast, where the peninsula Skallingen today to a certain degree protects the dunes
against the destructive powers of the sea.
From heath to plantation
The heath area north of Esbjerg was in the beginning of the
1900 hundred planted up with hardy types of wood – strange
to the area e.g. mountain pine and Sitka spruce. In 1921 Esbjerg Municipality bought the first areas in Marbæk. Today
– and especially after a hurricane in 1999 brought down
25,000 m3 of coniferous trees – more oak, birch, lime and
ash is planted. The larger degree of variation in the wood
attracts more species of birds, animals and mushrooms.
In the 1970ies Esbjerg Municipality established three lakes in
the areas. The lakes have a rich bird life. From 2010 the area
is included in the National Park Wadden Sea.

contains several layers of
sand, gravel and clay – deposited through million of years. At many places the
sand is beautifully yellow or reddish brown. This is the
result of a chemical process, which is initiated when rainwater
seeps down and compounds with the iron content of the sand. The
so-called iron sandstone, which is a result of this, appears »rusty«
and the beach can in several places on the stretch be striking red. It
is interesting that this red layer in the cliff is deposited at a very early
stage in the evolution.
Die Steilküste bei Marbæk enthält mehrere Schichten von Sand,
Kies und Lehm – durch Millionen von Jahren abgelagert. In vielen stellen ist das Sand schön gelb oder rotbraun. Dies ist das Resultat einer
chemischen Prozesses der anfingt wenn Regenwasser herabsickert
und in Verbindung mit dem Eiseninhalt des Sands tritt. Der sogenannte
Eisensandstein der hierbei entsteht scheint »rostig« und der Sandstrand
kann an mehrere Stellen markant rötlich sein. Es ist interessant dass
die rötlichen Schichten ganz früh in der Menschlichen Entwicklung
abgelagert worden sind.

gewachsen – wo die Halbinsel Skallingen heute, bis zu einem
gewissen Grade, die Steilküsten gegen die zersetzenden
Kräfte des Meeres beschützt.

Die Geschichte über Marbæk ist sowohl interessant als auch
dramatisch. Die jetzige Landschaft wurde von der vorigen und
letzten Eiszeit geformt – die vor ungefähr 10.000 Jahre her
ihren Griff aufgab und Wasser und Sand über Südwest-jütland spülte. Menschen haben seit der Steinzeit Spuren in der
Landschaft hinterlassen. In der jetzigen Plantage sind Acker
Reine von der früheren Steinzeit (rund Christi Geburt) zu sehen, und sowohl in Myrthue und Sjelborg kann man pflasterte Boden in Eisenzeit Bauernhäuser bewundern. Solche
Pflasterungen findet man nur in Südwestjütland. Im Gebiet
sind mehrere Hügelgräber von der Stein- und Bronzezeit. Das
Wattenmeer in west repräsentiert dagegen die sehr junge

Das Heidegebiet nördlich von Esbjerg wurde anfangs des
1900 Jahrhundert mit genügsamen »fremden« Baumarten
bepflanzt z.B. Bergkiefer und Sitkafichte. In 1921 kaufte Esbjerg Gemeinde die ersten Areale in Marbæk. Heute – und
besonders nachdem ein Orkan in 1999 25.000 m3 von Nadelbäumen umgerissen hat – wird mehr Eiche, Birke, Linde und
Esche gepflanzt. Die größere Variation im Wald zieht mehrere
Arten von Vögeln, Tieren und Pilzen an.
Esbjerg Gemeinde hat in den Siebziger drei Seen im Gebiet
angelegt. Die Seen haben ein reiches Vogelleben. Von 2010
wird das Gebiet teil des Nationalpark Wattenmeeres.

Knabenkraut ist die Orchidee der Heide. Die Orchidee kann in magere
und feuchte Erde leben und blüht zwischen Juni und August. Sie ist in
Westjütland ausgebreitet – aber nur mit den richtigen Lichtverhältnissen. Auf Landesebene ist sie von Zuwachsung und Überdüngung der
nährstoffarmen Naturtypen gedroht. Die Farbe kann von rosa biss
dunkellila variieren. Wie alle Orchideen steht sie unter Naturschutz und
pflücken oder aufgraben ist verboten.
