HOBY ugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) has worked at helping young people to make a difference and become positive catalysts for change—in the home, school, workplace and the community. HOBY’s mission is to inspire and develop youth and volunteers to a life of leadership, service, and innovation. HOBY leadership seminars held each spring are based on the core values of volunteerism, integrity, excellence, diversity, and community partnership. The HOBY motto for teaching young leaders is “how to think, not what to think.” Annually more than 9,000 students from across the country are chosen to represent their high school in HOBY State Leadership Seminars. The seminars allow students to recognize their leadership talents and apply them in becoming effective, ethical leaders in their home, school, and community. Selected students attend three or four day seminars in May and June to participate in hands-on leadership activities, meet leaders in their state, and explore their own personal leadership skills while learning how to lead others and make a positive impact in their community. You must be a sophomore to be eligible. In an essay of 100 words or less, please describe the most rewarding and challenging aspect of being a leader in your school and community. Also list community service and school activities you have been involved in. Submit your essay requirements to Mrs. Robin Thompson, School Counselor, deadline November 1, 2014. The students selected to attend will be notified in December. Learn more about the HOBY experience. www.hoby.org H PSAT / NMSQT The PSAT is a practice SAT test to help students learn strengths for college entrance exams. As a junior, the PSAT results are used to identify National Merit Scholars. The PSAT/NMSQT measures critical reading, mathematics, and writing skills students need for college and beyond. The PSAT includes five sections in three skill areas. Testing time totals 2 hours and 10 minutes. That doesn’t include the time it takes to complete personal information on the answer sheet and listen to instructions. Parents of 9th and 11th grade students, its time to sign up for the PSAT test! Freshmen and juniors may sign up in the Guidance office by 10/1 for a $20 fee. All sophomores are automatically registered for free.
