Helpful Hints
Use your planner. Organization is
a key to success. Keep track of
assignments, quizzes, tests, projects and due dates. Monitor your
grades on skyward, download the
app, check your progress on a
weekly basis. If you are having
difficulty in the classroom talk to
your teacher about what you are
struggling with. Attend tutoring
after school M-Th from 2:305pm. Students need about 9.5
hours of sleep each night to function best.

Read Everyday
People who read more know
more. Read at least 30 minutes
every day, in addition to studying
and homework. This habit will
pay off when you take a test with
timed reading sections, like college admission tests; ACT/SAT.

Sophomores
Ninth grade year is a thought of the past, hopefully
the start of tenth grade has been an exciting and smooth transition. It’s your time to “SOAR” through your sophomore year.
This is the year to maintain or develop your plan. Learn about
your options, review your transcript and check for accuracy.
See your school counselor for guidance.
HOBY
ugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) has worked at
helping young people to make a difference and become
positive catalysts for change—in the home, school, workplace
and the community. HOBY’s mission is to inspire and develop youth and volunteers to a life of leadership, service, and
innovation. HOBY leadership seminars held each spring are
based on the core values of volunteerism, integrity, excellence, diversity, and community partnership. The HOBY motto for teaching young leaders is “how to think, not what to
think.” Annually more than 9,000 students from across the
country are chosen to represent their high school in HOBY
State Leadership Seminars.
The seminars allow students to recognize their leadership talents and apply them in becoming effective, ethical
leaders in their home, school, and community. Selected students attend three or four day seminars in May and June to
participate in hands-on leadership activities, meet leaders in
their state, and explore their own personal leadership skills
while learning how to lead others and make a positive impact
in their community. You must be a sophomore to be eligible. In an essay of 100 words or less, please describe the most
rewarding and challenging aspect of being a leader in your
school and community. Also list community service and
school activities you have been involved in. Submit your essay requirements to Mrs. Robin Thompson, School Counselor, deadline November 1, 2014. The students selected to attend will be notified in December. Learn more about the
HOBY experience. www.hoby.org

PSAT / NMSQT
The PSAT is a practice SAT test to help students
learn strengths for college entrance exams. As a junior, the
PSAT results are used to identify National Merit Scholars.
The PSAT/NMSQT measures critical reading, mathematics,
and writing skills students need for college and beyond. The
PSAT includes five sections in three skill areas. Testing time
totals 2 hours and 10 minutes. That doesn’t include the time it
takes to complete personal information on the answer sheet
and listen to instructions. Parents of 9th and 11th grade students, its time to sign up for the PSAT test! Freshmen and
juniors may sign up in the Guidance office by 10/1 for a $20
fee. All sophomores are automatically registered for free. Visit
https://www.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt
Juniors
Are you on track for graduation? Are you building
your resume of activities, honors, and awards? If not, start
now! You should list all your honors, awards, leadership positions, and activities such as sports, clubs, and volunteer service on a student resume. Begin your college and career
search. Consult with your school counselor about credits
earned and those still needed for graduation. Review your
transcript and check for accuracy. You should take the SAT
and ACT Plus Writing at least once junior year. Yes, we recommend you register for both tests. For SAT question of the

NCAA Clearinghouse
If you are an athlete and plan on playing at a Division
I or Division II school, register with the clearinghouse at the
beginning of your junior year. You must have your ACT/SAT
scores sent directly to NCAA by using code 9999 whenever
you take the exam. www.eligibilitycenter.org
Seniors
Continue to do your best! Strive to make good
grades. Apply to all schools you are interested in, be mindful
of admissions, scholarships, and financial aid deadlines. You
can find this information on the colleges websites or by calling the admission office. Check our Seminole High School
