Discovering Latin America Film Festival
WELCOME
CELEBRATING OUR
1 0 t h EDITION!!!
Welcome to the 10th edition of the Discovering Latin America Film Festival, a
festival which not only brings the best of Latin American cinema to London but
also makes a difference in the region by contributing the proceeds to the less
privileged sectors of the population.
A lot has changed since we held our first edition more than a decade ago. Films
like “Amores Perros” and “Cidade de deus” were opening the doors for a new wave
of Latin American Cinema; now we see Latin American directors and actors
succeeding in all international arenas.
With 10 years of strong growth, the economy has also changed but there is still a
huge divide and extreme poverty across the region. This year we are donating the
festival’s proceeds to Association la Alianza, to support girls who are victims of
trafficking in Guatemala through residential care, counselling, education and
health care.
Around 50 volunteers from 20 different nationalities have come together this year
to bring you the 10th edition. I am extremely grateful for their effort and am sure
the long hours they have put in and your presence in the screenings will help us
make an impact in Latin America.
Thanks for helping us change Latin America!
Daniel Calderon, Festival Director
I’m extremely proud and truly delighted to welcome you all to the 10th
anniversary of the most thrilling Latin American film festival in London! We
are back with a spectacular selection of films, along with the most exciting
guests, retrospectives and workshops, all in prime London locations. We
will open the festival with the highly acclaimed “To Kill a Man”, and we are
honoured to have Alejandro Fernández Almendras joining us for the gala. We
also have Guita Schyfter, Javier Andrade and Luis Ospina, whose
retrospective organised in collaboration with Tate Modern is one of the
highlights of the festival. Along with the traditionally strongly represented
cinematographies of Argentina, Mexico and Brazil, this year we also
managed to secure some fantastic films from Cuba and Colombia, which
I’m really pleased about. I am also delighted to present feature films and
documentaries from lesser known cinematographies such as Guatemala,
Ecuador and Peru.
I very much hope you will enjoy this wonderful celebration of cinema from
one of the most fascinating parts of the world!

Church. In so doing, he becomes a founding
figure of modern day Mexico.
Paco Chavez leads a careless and charming life

Leonardo and Giovana are best of friends; like
all teenagers they yearn for more
independence from their parents, dream of
going abroad and to experience love's first
kiss. Gabriel, the new boy at school, quickly
becomes friends with them both but ultimately
three becomes a crowd. Who will Leonardo give
his first kiss to? “The Way He Looks” is the
debut feature length film from award-winning
filmmaker Daniel Ribeiro, who won the Iris
Prize for the short film “I Don’t Want to Go
Home Alone”, which “The Way He Looks” was
based upon.
Téllez is a severe and prestigious film critic,
weary of Hollywood romantic comedies and
certain that the best of cinema has already died.
Perhaps because of his work, he suffers from
what he calls the 'maladie du cinema' and he
sees the world as if it were a big movie he can't
avoid criticising. He unexpectedly meets Sofía, a
young, attractive woman who has little in
common with his good taste. He would describe
her as “elemental, constructed on a basis of
cliches”. Random circumstances bring them
together over and over again in strangely idyllic
situations. He tries to escape from a staging
that he loathes but suspects that the movie
genre that he hates is taking revenge.
Tomas, an Afro-Colombian teenager pushed out
of the Pacific coast by war, flees to the city
where he faces the difficulty of growing up
surrounded by exclusion and racism. When Jairo,
his younger brother and closest friend
disappears, Tomas plunges into the streets of
the city. His search compels him to face his past
and to leave aside the influence of his brothers
in order to find his own identity. Through this
journey, Tomas reveals a unique perspective of a
vibrant and unstable city that, like Tomas,
stands on the threshold between what once was
and what might be.
This charming, light-hearted dramedy,
co-written and directed by lead actor Mello,
explores identity and the road to self-acceptance.The Circo Esperança (Hope Circus) roams
the valleys and mountains of southwestern
Brazil. Among its hodgepodge of misfits, are
the father/son clown duo of Pangaré (Mangy
Horse) and Puro Sangue (Thoroughbred), who
make a living making people laugh. In one
pivotal scene, Pangaré asks, “I make people
laugh, but who will make me laugh?” His
father responds, “In life we have to do what we
know how to do.” By capturing the seemingly
insignificant moments that make up life in a
family or small community, Mello evokes a
special time and space and makes it intimately
recognisable - even if you've never been part of
an exotic circus.

Mysterious labyrinths, semi-real architecture,

Alfredo, a demonic navy nurse, and Carlos, a
trendy computer technician, find themselves

characters, and seduction will change their

survival so that his story would not be forgotten.
In spite of the anguish of her absence, he had
hoped that one day he could give it to his
daughter. This day has come. We follow Tomas

and we will witness how he must overcome the

them. Distance can be measured in geography,

Full of twists and turns, this comedy/drama by
Daniel Diaz Torres, tells a fascinating story of a
professional actress who decides to embark on
a new career path after experiencing a
prolonged bout of artistic frustration. However,
the ambitious plans get complicated when the
international film-makers get involved. A
character study of great depth and veracity, La
pelicula de Ana also works beautifully as a
satire of a film industry obsessed with the
female body and all of its mysteries. It’s also
an interesting auto-reflection of the
image-making processes and a beautiful
portrait of Havana.
Manrique is the man in charge of watching an
abandoned salt mine in a recondite place in
the Colombian Caribbean. In his work, he has
found the perfect excuse to isolate himself
from a world that does not appeal to him
anymore. Nevertheless, the unusual
appearance of a dog that likes to chase
fireflies in the dark, and the unexpected
arrival of Valeria, a thirteen year old daughter
whose existence he ignored, will allow this
solitary man an opportunity to recover the joy
of being alive.

'How-to' films written by indigenous children from the Andes of Peru. Their mission is to teach you.
Over the course of 18 months, Amantani worked with a group of indigenous children from
marginalised communities, giving them the communications tools they needed to teach their
ancestral skills to people all over the world. The children created a series of short films to share
positive aspects of community life, which make them proud to be indigenous. The “Meet My World”
series is an invitation to reimagine the relationship between the world’s poor and the people in a
position to help. Amantani wants to address the historical imbalance in this relationship, moving
away from pity and assumptions of cultural superiority, towards reciprocal connections based on
respect and common understanding.
