his is a liturgically rich time
of
the
Church
year.
Yesterday,
November
1,
commemorated the multitude of
saints in heaven whose names are
unknown. The book of Revelation
indicates a vast number of them.
Indeed, when thinking on the
totality of humanity since the
creation-a staggering number of
men and women-there ought to
be, human malice and sin
notwithstanding, a goodly number
of holy people among them who
died at peace with God and in a
state of grace and who now
inhabit heaven. Some writers have
speculated that perhaps one third
of human souls are in hell. That
guess (derived from the estimated
parallel number of fallen angels)
would mean two-thirds are either
in heaven now, or else on the
way, i.e. in purgatory. The lastmentioned brings me to speak
about the complex subject of All
Souls Day 2014, wherein today
Sunday keeps the observance for
all those following the ‘new’ rite
(the Ordinary Form), while for
those keeping the Tridentine
calendar, All Souls is transferred
this year to Monday, November 3.

News: For today, Sunday: the

6:30 a.m. and Noon Masses
commemorate All Souls, while the
9:30 a.m. Mass is that of the 21st
Sunday
after
Pentecost.
Moreover, the noon Mass today is
an orchestral Mass, with the
affecting Requiem Mass in C
minor by Luigi Cherubini.
For Monday: All Souls Day will
be celebrated in all Tridentine
Masses. Masses in the morning
will be more or less continuous
from 7:30 a.m. through 9:45 a.m.
Then there will also be three
evening Masses: 7:00, 7:30 and
8:00. p.m.
You are all highly encouraged to
attend many Masses on All Souls
Day, so that prayers and the holy
sacrifice may benefit the faithful
departed in purgatory. Partial
indulgences for the dead may be
gained as well, that is,
indulgences in addition to the
plenary indulgence (see below).
However, you should note that one
may not receive Holy Communion
more than twice on any day.
I also want to mention that a
Plenary Indulgence may be gained
(once daily) for the dead, from
November 1 through 8, by visiting
our cemetery while praying there,
even only mentally, for the faithful
departed. In addition to these
prayers one must be in a state of
grace and not have even venial sin
on one’s soul (an Act of Contrition
beforehand is advised to remedy
such a condition); one must also
have recourse to sacramental
Confession and Communion, and
say some prayers for the intentions
of the Pope (these last conditions
may be fulfilled some days before,
or even after, the cemetery visit[s]),
but the reception of Holy
Communion is more fittingly made
on the same day as the cemetery
visit.

On another subject: Our parish
Forty Hours Devotion opens this
Friday. It begins with the opening
Mass and procession of the
Blessed Sacrament at 7:30 a.m.
Exposition of the Sacrament takes
place throughout the day until the
9:00 p.m. Benediction. On Saturday November 8, there will be a
side altar Mass at 7:30 a.m. and a
Carmelite Third Order Communion Mass at 8:30 a.m. with Exposition on the main altar until 9:00
p.m. (Note that the Exposition is
suspended during the 4:00 p.m.
Mass). Next Sunday will have
Exposition beginning at 6:00 a.m.
(interrupted during the Sunday
Masses, except for the solemn
Mass at noon when Mass is celebrated in the presence of the exposed Sacrament). Our special
homilist for this noon Mass will
be Monsignor Robert McClory,
the Moderator of the Curia for the
Archdiocese of Detroit. His presence here ought to make this
Mass well-attended Mass. (N.B. I
count on having many of you
here for this.) The Procession and
Litany of Saints follows and will
conclude the ceremonies.
