Tribune November 2014 A MONTHLY PUBLICATION OF TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH, MERRILL, WI God’s Blessings . . . Beyond Imagination! THANKSGIV ING SERVIC Wednesda ES y, Novemb er 26 • 6:30 Thursday, pm November 27 • 9:30am “So if you faithfully obey the commands I am giving you today—to love the LORD your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul—then I will send rain on your land in its season, both autumn and spring rains, so that you may gather in your grain, new wine and olive oil. I will provide grass in the fields for your cattle, and you will eat and be satisfied.” Deuteronomy 11:13-15 After what I consider to have been a long winter, a short spring and a far too quick summer of toiling in the fields, this autumn you have hopefully reaped your bountiful harvest so that on Thanksgiving Day, November 27th, you will give thanksgiving to the One who gives life. Right? Does that sound like the autumn you’re living right now? Is your work in the field finishing up? Are you ready to rest your weary limbs on a haystack? Or does your autumn look more like a computer screen and a paper stack; a year of work inside that is just ramping up? Culturally we’re pretty far from the origins of the first Day of Thanksgiving. And yet, Thanksgiving Day is more than just some cultural vestige in the modern calendar. In a society that seeks secularity, Thanksgiving still offers the sacred. The stories of our time, on television, in movies and in our books, tell a pretty harmful tale: the ideal person is independent, self-made, relies on no one. Advertising tells us that we should be concerned only with ourselves, that we are the centre of the universe. But is this really true? Where would we be without the field, someone to thresh it’s wheat and grind the flour? Where would we be without friends, without family? Without our social activists of the last 150 years? Without health workers, or bureaucrats, or accountants, or even politicians? Seems to me that our cultural stories about the independent person, taken seriously, are a recipe for personal, environmental and social disaster. Thanksgiving Day offers the opportunity to be rid of the secular and gather in the sacred. It reminds us of the importance that we must always not only acknowledge our dependence upon one another, but our even greater dependence upon God. And instead of lamenting about our dependence, we rejoice that the One we depend upon is also a giver of all blessings. As Christians we affirm that God’s greatest gift is Jesus, a gift characterized by radical and generous forgiveness, by radical and generous love for even the most despised. Our only response to such grace is to lead lives transformed by such a grace. Imagine, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week God is up to something wonderful in the lives of all people. Many miss it, but you and I are blessed beyond imagination! How? Because we have been invited by God to follow Him as He continues to bring hope to the despaired, freedom to the captive, and living sight to those blind in sin. We look forward to seeing you in God’s House each Lord’s Day! — Pastor Gustafson 1 Trinity Pre-School, Youth Groups Youth Events Preschool News Preschool is off to a fantastic start. All 24 eager little learners come to school each day, full of excitement, joy, and innocence. They are learning to recognize letters of the alphabet, numbers, and to write their names. We have taken two outdoor field trips, one to the Council Grounds and one to Grandpa’s Farm. At the Council Grounds, we explored God’s creation in the beautiful autumn forest, then built a big campfire and enjoyed somemores. At Grandpa’s farm, we took part in a hay ride, went to the pumpkin patch, pet live animals, and made our own homemade ice cream! We are ready for all the learning and love each day brings! What a Fun Fall We’ve had in Kindergarten! We had a monarch butterfly hatch on our first day of school! We learned about bus safety, had a visit from the fire department and picked apples at Helene’s Orchard. We are receiving alphabet letters from all over the country from other Lutheran Schools and showing on a map where they came from. We love looking at the different letters and how they decorated them! We made the letter B into bears and sent them to the schools. Come check out our map by our kindergarten room. For letter Bb week we read stories about bears and made giant bubbles outside. 2 Oct 19 — T.Y.M. Oct 26 — No T.Y.M. Nov 2 — T.Y.M. Nov 16 — T.Y.M. Nov 23 — No T.Y.M. Our Chapel Theme this Year Is “Stand In Mercy” “God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions – it is by grace you have been saved.” (Eph. 2:4-5 NIV). Come join us for chapel devotions to see Jesus whose sacrifice makes it possible for us to “STAND in Mercy.” Weekly chapel services are a highlight of our life in our Lutheran school. Typically the chapel service brings our school family together to hear God’s Word, praise Him for His mercy, and pray His blessing on church, school, and the lives of children and families. Here is the schedule for the month of November. Please join us for chapel on Wednesdays at 8:20am. Wed., November 5............8:20am......... This is the LCMS’s disaster response ministry. They work with local parishes and districts, giving hope by providing encouragement, counseling, long-term planning, and physical assistance to families affected by catastrophes. Together, through your support of the Ready Now: Disaster Response Fund, we can share the hope of Christ in word and action. NLSA Update Trinity School is in the process of re-accreditation with National Lutheran Schools Accreditation. 35 volunteers make up the teams to complete the self-study for the seven standards to be reported. We are about halfway through completing our documentation, and are preparing to submit our report in January for a spring visit from the accreditation team. Please keep the people involved in this process in prayer as we move forward. Student Council “Hats Off For Cancer.” Trinity’s Student Council celebrated Mad Hatter Day (10/6) by encouraging the school’s staff and students to wear their silliest hats and make a cash donation to support the purchase of hats for children with cancer. As a result of their efforts, they were able to forward a check for $100 to “Hats Off for Cancer.” Capital Campaign November 1 and November 8 are important dates as every member of Trinity Lutheran Church has the opportunity to step forward and help Grow People by making a commitment to the ministry the Lord has set before us. If you miss the celebration of Commitment Sunday, don’t miss being a part of Trinity’s vision by adding your commitment card to those that are collected on November 7 and 8. 3 Trinity School, What’s Preschool Happening? & Dayca,, re Are you Available? Our committment celebration committee is looking for helpers for the gatherings to be held after all four worship services on the weekend of November 8th and 9th. Do you have a nativity scene of Jesus’ birth you set up inside your home at Christmastime? Would you like to bring it from your home to your church for display with many others? We did this in 2011 when about 40 people (from an 8 year old child to an 89 year old person) brought their nativities which we displayed inside our sanctuary. It was quite beautiful and filled with wonderful stories of family, love, Jesus. And, it was enjoyed by people of Trinity as well as our Community. You could choose to help set up or serve at one (or more) of the services that weekend. It will be a very joyous and exciting celebratory atmosphere, that everyone will be invited to stay and enjoy. • We will be doing this again this year, the weekend of December 6/7. For more information or to volunteer, call Sherry Kleinschmidt at 715-5368681, or Nina Skic at 715536-3904. Thank you and God bless you! • Please return your forms by Monday December 1. (It’s a big help to us knowing how many nativities to plan for). Do You Like To Knit and/or Crochet? Do you enjoy doing something with your hands while watching TV? If the answer is “yes”, we have a deal for you! The Quilters have been blessed with an abundance of yarn. We would love to share it and have you make mittens, caps, hats, prayer shawls, socks, or anything to keep people warm. Determine how much yarn you need and come to see us any Monday afternoon between 1:00pm and 3:00pm. When you’ve completed the item, return it to us. We’ll forward it to a charity in the area or the Orphan Grain Train which is the recipient of our quilts. If you have questions, contact Carol Holz at 715-536-5224 or Kay Maluegge at 715-536-3343. 4 Nativities From Your Home to Trinity • Advance registration forms (blue) will be in the narthex. • Please complete the form and place it in the specially marked container. • If you are displaying more than one set, please complete a separate form for each one. • Watch the weekly bulletins for further info. If any questions, please contact: Mary Ann Reibe (536-2287) or Kay Maluegge (536-3343) or Elaine Nass (536-9319). Trinity Fall Blood Drive To Be Held November 9th Trinity's annual Fall Blood Drive will be held on Sunday, November 9, 2014 in the church basement. We are hoping that many of our members will be moved to donate once again, as they have done so generously in the past. We are looking for those donors whose last whole blood donation was prior to September 14rh in order to meet eligibility requirements. We would also like to welcome anyone who would like to be a "first-time" donor as well. Of course we welcome any walk-in donors on the day of the Blood Drive, although you may experience a short wait. Attention: Mustard Seed Customers If you have Scrip from The Mustard Seed, please either use it soon, or return it to us before December 20 for a full refund. We are closing our doors at that time. No Scrip will be honored after December 20th, so don’t wait. Use it now or turn it in at the Mustard Seed for a full refund. (Please note: Trinity will not be issuing refunds, so be sure to bring the Scrip to The Mustard Seed store only. GIVE THANKS ALWAYS Full many a blessing wears the guise of worry or of trouble; Far-seeing is the soul, and wise, who knows the mask is double. But he who has the faith and strength to thank his God for sorrow Has found a joy without alloy to gladden every morrow. —Ella Wheeler Wilcox OPEN HEARTS FOOD PANTRY... Please remember us with your caring donations. You may find it amazing that your single blood donation can save up to three lives. Two years ago Hurricane Sandy hit the East coast the same week as the Trinity Blood Drive, and a call for blood was extended. Those who gave at Trinity's Blood Drive had their donation go to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy. So you see, donating blood does matter, and can make a big difference in the lives of others. Please, won't you consider donating blood at the upcoming Blood Drive? The Food Pantry can use either. There is a sign up sheet on the credenza in the church narthex. For more information or register by phone please call Sue Smith, Trinity Blood Drive Chair, at (715) 539-2878. Thank you and God’s blessings to you! Does anyone ever wonder what our Food Pantry does with all the cans of food which are purchased or donated? We pack 25 items in a box for each family. If we have 70 families in a month, that is 1,750 items. 80 families is 2,000 items. WOW! We would like to be able to give more as 25 packages or cans do not last long. Some of the items we include in a box are spaghetti sauce, pasta, pancake mix and syrup, vegetables, soup, pork and beans, rice, tuna, chicken, toilet tissue and a bar of soap. Nothing unique, but needed items. This is why we are always shopping and asking for donations of non-perishable grocery items or money, if that is easier. We know it is appreciated by the comments we hear. Recently, a man asked how he can repay us when he is back on his feet again as he stated he knows he will be on his feet. We replied we can always use food items, cash, or a check made out to Trinity Food Pantry or Trinity Open Hearts Food Pantry. •Perfumed Powder •Watches - Men’s or Ladies (with large face) November Scrip News and Summary SALES & PROFIT: Calendar Yr To Date (1/1-9/30) Church Yr To Date (7/1-9/30) SALES $383,711.53 $115,072.00 PROFIT $19,727.14 $ 5,645.99 November is here and so is the start of some busy months. God's Blessings... ...to these (80+) Seniors with Birthdays in September Hello Everyone ... Miriam Mouse here... Wow! I can’t believe how fast the time seems to fly by. I suppose it is because it continues to be so busy here at my residence. There are still a good deal of folks coming or going here at the church. With every opening and closing of the door, you can feel the chilly outdoor temperatures swooshing in. The various committees for the Capital Campaign continue to meet often, planning a number of events. The prayer committee is still going through the many prayer cards of the congregation. They have attached the prayer request cards to the entry of the church proper for all to read, and they have received hundreds and hundreds of cards. This is truly a praying church, and it is amazing to see the great need for prayers. It is also quite busy over at the school. Since the PTO Pig Roast on November 1st, the planning of activities continues in full force. The little ones of the school learn at a young age how to serve the Lord. Not only do they learn to serve, they have fun doing so, The “Change In Technology” fundraiser is underway, and the students are trying to fill a large plexiglass container with coins to raise money for new technology, specifically I-pads for all classrooms. There are competitions between classes to fill their classroom piggy banks with the most silver coins. The students love competitions, and continue vying for the “Spirit Stick” each Friday, which goes to the class with the most students wearing their Trinity T-shirts. I’ve heard that on Friday, November 21st the students will be dressed in camo and blaze orange in celebration of the upcoming deer hunt. I think I will stay inside my residence that day, just to make sure that none of the students may be thinking about also hunting a mouse or two. And, can you believe that preparations for the Christmas programs are underway for everyone from preschool through eighth grade? It’s a good thing those students have so much energy, because they have a lot they want to accomplish. Just hearing about all of the activities going on here at church and over at the school, makes my little brain weary. I think I’ll sneak off and try to catch a nap. So, until next time ... Sunday School News... Sunday School is in full swing with classes for children from birth to sixth grade. This month’s special feature is our Birth–3 Class. This program is scheduled to begin October 1, 2014 and run through May 15, 2015. Eligible households will receive a one-time benefit during the heating season to help with energy costs. Eligibility is based on household size and gross income in the three months prior to the application month. If interested in applying for this benefit, please call the Lincoln Country Department of Social Services at 715-539-1344 for an appointment. Applicants must apply in the county in which they reside. Need Information on WIC? Trinity’s church office has brochures detailing the Women, Infants and Children Nutrition Program. If you live in Wisconsin, are pregnant or have an infant or young children at home and need assistance with health and nutrition, you may be eligible for this program. Income guidelines are revised every July. Call us for more information. SCHOOL WEBSITE: Birth-3’s is a wonderful class for our littlest learners and their parents. Together we have fun playing, learning, and praying. Our weekly classes include puppet shows featuring either Bubba or Judy, songs we sing together in a big circle, a Bible story, learning games and activities, offerings, prayers, and a craft to go along with our lesson. Our topics have included creation, Adam and Eve, Noah, the Tower of Babel, and Jonah. In November we will be learning about Abraham, Moses, and our families that we are so thankful for. On the last Sunday in November, we will begin learning about the Nativity Story which will take us up to Christmas. We always have so much fun together in our interactive and laid-back classes. Please join us if you have a child age three or younger. We meet at 9:15 in the school gym. We would love to have you and your little one! The Birth-3 class is staffed by Jill Johns, Heather Burtman, and Karli Severt. www.tlsmerrill.com www.trinitymerrill.com CHURCH WEBSITE: “SHARE, STRENGTHEN AND SERVE”...
